    "Weaning" off the sleeping bag!

Ladies, I'm a bit stuck. ("Stuck mumma, STUCK" - DS's new word )

DS is 18mths, coming up to 19mths. He is a tall boy, not stick thin but not chubby. I think around 12kgs. Wearing size 2 clothes. Has been in sleeping bags since 4mths old. Currently in size 6-18mths. Getting to tight around the neck and need to wean him out of them!

This afternoon I attempted to put him down for his sleep without the bag. He just played, yelled out to me, walked around in the cot, banged the wall etc for an hour I didn't leave him alone for all that time, I was in and out, lying him down, cuddling him, rubbing his back, telling him it was time for sleeping, shushing, sitting on the floor, tried everything. Eventually I put him back into the bag and he drifted off. Hmm.

With DD, we transitioned her to her big girl bed in her sleeping bag, then just removed the bag for day sleeps and a few days later at nights as well.

That's not going to work for DS as he is still in the cot.

    Suggestions???

I really don't want to buy the bigger size... he will be in a bed soon enough and I don't think it is worth it.

With Zoe- I transitioned to the sleep suit with the separated legs- found them in best and less.
Only did it because she could get out of her sleeping bag.
    Is this an option?

Or could you put him in the cot with blanket/s short sheeted and tucked in, so he's still "cosy" ?

No help here. DD is nearly three and still in one! She tosses and turns so much that it is the only thing that keeps her covered. I have a thicker one in the bigger size. The zip is broken, but you can have it if you know how to replace zips.

We are going to be in the same position very soon! Dd is the same as your ds about 12kg and in size 2 and the same size sleeping bag but she is busting out of it and every morning she is now out of it as she stretches out and pops the buttons!! Anyway it has been really hot here and there have been times that her sleeping bag has been in the washer or whatever so we haven't been able to use it...so what I do is lie her down as if I was going to put her in the sleeping bag And wrap her legs loosely in a sheet...she doesn't seem to notice the difference but she wil do the same as you ds if I put her to bed without it! She is going into a big bed in about a months so I figure I will do the same then and that way if she needs to get up she wont be stuck in her bag to do it....good luck!!!

I would prob just buy a bigger sleeping bag. It would help the transition to a bed too.

Sorry that's not what you wanted to hear...maybe you could ask around if someone can lend you one?

can you transition into a bed now? would that help?

otherwise, I'd also just try tucking the sheets very tightly, to see if that helped ...

in the recent hot weather, we just stopped using sleeping bags (because it was too hot) and haven't gone back to them - but DS wasn't using the bag for day sleeps, so it hasn't been to big a change ...

I have one very big sleeping bag you could borrow, but it's probably too thick ... want me to bring it on Monday for you to have a look at?

I second Peanutter. could he go into a big boy bed now? Ds1 was 18mths when he went into his king single. We had no problems.

Thanks gals. Cost is the only reason I don't want to get the bigger size so Peanutter I'd love to have a look if I can thank you my dear!

Likewise lilima - is it a grobag one? Or similar? I can get MIL to have a look at my current grobag and see what she thinks, she's pretty handy. Thank you for the offer! I'll let you know...

I tried tucking him in really tight, he just pulls his legs up and kicks the blankets off. Haven't tried wrapping a sheet around him but I don't think it'd work... maybe I can try!

It's so frustrating because he doesn't use it anywhere else!!

As far as moving him to a big bed now, we would love to, except we don't have one yet And the cot doesn't convert.

Maybe I need to force that issue... get started on clearing out the spare room, make ready for his bed... hmm

Might be a good idea. If you want to try him in a big bed and see if it helps we have an old king single mattress you could borrow and put on the floor to see how he goes. Otherwise we also have the side rails that are just in the cupboard at the moment if you want to borrow them.

    Thanks MM, that's lovely!

We've got a rail all ready to go... all the linen... it's just the bed and the mattress!! Might think about the offer of the mattress... hmm...

I just spoke to DH, thought we could do a bit effort this weekend to try and get the room cleared and ready for a bed, maybe even go buy a bed, but he is working, all weekend. Again. Sigh.

Sorry I'm another that has given into getting bigger sized sleeping bags. We just bought 3 18-36 months from an online store called cozy touch $36.95 each - 2x 2.6 togs & 1 0.9 tog. They don't have much choice colour & design wise but for $36.95 I wasn't going to argue. DS1 was out of one by 13 months & in a bed at 2 years but he didn't move he'd sleep in the same position all night lol. DS2 is a tummy sleeper & moves constantly. I doubt he'll be in a bed before he's 3 Having said that he has just started at day-care & he's sleeping on a little bed thing so he may transition earlier.

Hope it doesn't work out to be hard as it is looking for you x

Hansie, thanks for that tip - off to have a look now.

To be honest it sounds like that is going to be the easiest solution right now and if I could do it cheaply, that'd rock.

    Off to google.

Mine you can have is a grobag. Sorry to tell you E is in a big girl bed and the sleeping bag, as she rolls all around the bed!

Only prob is mine is the thicker TOG, but will still be good in a few months time. Just need someone to put a new zip in!
