WDID - give up or keep going?

DD2 (20months) is in her cot and has been since 1pm fighting to have a sleep. She is so tired - rubbing her eyes, pulling her hair - her tired cues.
I have been in and out, cuddled her, put her down most things I usually do.
Given its now 3.30 would you give up? Normally they are both in bed about 7.30/8pm. Just not sure I can cope today with the tantrums that will follow.

Is she upset our just fighting sleep?

If she is distressed I'd just give up. She might fall sleep on the couch or something when she's more relaxed.
If she's happy I'd just leave her, maybe give her some books to read so she can just "rest" instead.

I would have given up ages ago. DD2 fights her nap some days no matter how tired she seems. I try and if it fails the first time I stop and try again in half an hour if that fails again then no nap for her.

We go with 'rest' time too. So I put DS down and as long and he isn't distressed he stays in his cot. If he doesn't fall asleep straight away I give him a soft toy and a book and normally he falls asleep while he is 'reading'. I'm happy so long as he is having quiet time.

I know with my DD, when she has trouble going to sleep - she doesn't really fight it like DS did - there's generally some sort of reason. Like poo, for eg.

That's pretty awful. Hope it wasn't too traumatic for you
