    Mushroom allergy anyone?

    Hi there,
last night my DD had raw mushrooms with her dinner ( we all did!).
She didn't particularly enjoy them and only chewed but didn't swallow. Nothing happened to her at all until she woke 12 hours later with a horribly red rash (hives) covering at least 80% of her body... particularly bad on her face. I had no idea what had caused the rash, so we took her to our GP who said she's allergic to something, we'd just have to keep an eye on her and find out what.

So the only thing I can think of that is out of the 'ordinary' that has occurred in the last few days, is the raw mushrooms. She's had mushrooms before - cooked in risotto and never had a complaint.
I've done a little googling and have seen a few people mention a mushroom allergy. Was wondering if anyone else happened to have it and if they'd have any advice?

My mum is allergic to mushrooms, she gets a big red rash and swelling so hasn't touched a mushroom since she was younger.
You could try a food challenge at home and keep an eye on her or if your worried i'd be looking at getting a referral to an allergist, remember some but not ALL allergies can get worse with time so it might be better to be safe and just get it checked out.

    Thanks ladies.

I actually took her to the GP today but he said we just 'have to keep an eye on her to work out what it is'.

I might test her in a few weeks when her hives have gone and she's had a good few days. I will be close by to the hospital and armed with antihistamines. She's been well other than a little swelling and the massive rash of hives. Hopefully that's all it is and we can avoid them from now on (but that SUCKS because hubby and I LOVE mushrooms!).

Just wondering, those of you allergic to mushrooms - are you allergic to cooked as well as raw? Or one or the other?
Do you have any reaction when mushrooms touch your skin and you don't actually ingest them.

I'm a little concerned about DD's reaction as she didn't actually SWALLOW any mushroom, just bit on a raw slice and then spat it all out. It seems very severe considering she didn't actually ingest any, and being almost an hour from the nearest medical help is a tad scary should she have an anaphylactic reaction in the future. :S

If you can get testing for the allergy it will give you piece of mind. I have a mold and fungus allergy among others so any mushrooms can be unpleasant.

My brother is allergic to mushrooms and found out by eating something that had mushroom in it that he didn't even realise. He couldn't breathe. I dont know too much more about it, but yes it is out there. I'll see if he can tell me more.
