I've been quoted $550 for a single mattress for DS. This seems excessive - but would I be getting a better buy than the $100 or similar from Fantastic Furniture?
I don't know hun, we got one for around $300 that is spring and not foam, has a good warranty (I think 10 years) and we got it from Sydneys. We have both slept on it a lot (as you do ) and it is more comfy than our bed $500 seems a lot, might be worth hunting around. We wanted it to last them quite a long time, but also conscious that they are relatively light for a few years ITMS!
That sounds like a lot to me too. I do think you get what you pay for, but little bodies have very little weight to them and so (as I was told) don't need anything like the support that big people need so you can get away with cheaper mattresses without compromising IYKWIM. I think the girls' mattresses were about $250 for the single beds they have at my Mum's house. Probably doesn't help for me to tell you where I bought them - unless you feel like a lovely looooooooooong drive to pick them up ;-)
I think I paid about $500 each for my boys' mattresses. Considering they sleep in them for 11-12 hrs a day for 15 years it's a good investment for their little backs.
Yeah, I believe you do get what you pay for when it comes to mattresses. Both DH and I have lower back problems so only buy decent, supportive mattresses for all of us.
We paid around $250 for DD1's king single mattress and that was half price at Forty Winks and we bought her entire bedroom suite so we got a good deal. It should last a good 10 years and boy is it comfy!
We pay a decent amount for the girls mattresses as they will be using them well into their teens and we want them to hold decent weight for those odd times than an adult might sleep there.
Also remember they just don't sleep in them, often there will be a number of kids sitting on the mattress, plus there are the bedtime reading sessions with me or DH sitting on their as well.
i bought a king single bed from e-bay for $12, and then paid $700+ for a mattress , but it is an awesome mattress! you can tell the difference with a nice mattress, however kids will also be fine on a cheaper mattress if that's what you decide on. i never had a new mattress when i was a kid. i think my folks were in their 40's before they got their first new mattress.
We went with cheap singles for the kids, I've slept on them and they are comfy. But we plan to put them into doubles/queens when we stop moving around so much, so in the next couple of years.
I don't think they were as cheap as $100, maybe 150-200?
IKEA - have a big range you can lay on and see difference we got about third cheapest from there for our bunks and trundle, all the grandparents have stayed on them and us occasionally and they are really comfortable.
I think we spent around $400 each as we plan for the girls to keep using them for a while, I thought it was worth the investment. They were around mid price range. We do however use a waterproof protector on them with a quilted protector over it as I would be upset if the puked/peed/pooped over a mattress we had invested in.
We bought a $70 foam one from clark rubber. I and my 3 siblings all had foam matresses until we were well into our teens, and no issues - but there's no family history of back troubles, etc, and 3 of us moved to spring matresses around 18 years old.
We have however bought a bed with a very firm, wooden slat base to make sure he has reasonable support.
We ended up at Harvey Norman, they were having 40% off, so we got a nice Sealy one from there at a really good price. Should last him a good number of years!
