Transitioning from sleeping bag to sheets and blankets....

DD is a great little sleeper. She has always slept in some sort of sleeping bag - since about 7ish months it's been a gro-bag. She loves it and I think it's currently great for her as she stil is at the point where she won't stay where you put her - she sleeps in any spot in any direction in her cot.

Anyway, with the colder weather coming I'm starting to wonder whether it would be better to have her sleeping under a sheet and blankets, but I'm unsure for the following reasons:

    1. I'm not sure if she is 'ready' due to sleeping in every direction currently (or do they all sleep like this until they are given a sheet and blankets?
    2. Is she too young for this due to SIDS type reasons (ie is she likely to overheat)?
    3. Is it necessary??? (when did you transition your little one?)
    4. How do I go about doing this???

DD1 is 3 and still doesn't properly position herself under the blankets. When she was 2 she was in a bag, now that she is 3... this winter we've just had to dress her warm.

Dd was 3 when she stopped using a sleeping bag. Now she is in a polar fleece onesie under blankets, as she never stays under them!

I would keep her in the sleeping bag for the time being. If you think she is cold, add another layer under, or you could always add a blanket on top of her, as she is not a tiny little bubs any more.

We only transitioned DD out of her bags as she was going into a bed and I was worried she would try to walk in one without much success! She was only a couple of weeks shy of her second birthday.

With sleeps bags I felt so confident she was nice and warm all night as she's a real wriggler, now in a bed she wriggles out from under the covers so we have to dress her warmly, although it has only just started cooling down here.

Perhaps keep her in bags until after winter so you know she's nice and warm at night? We couldn't transition out of bags whilst DD was still in the cot because then she could throw her leg over and climb out!

DD point blank refused to even have a sheet over the top of her until she went into a big bed when she was just over 2. She isn't too bad, but often squiggles the doona off her anyway, I just check her before I go to bed and fix it up. Could you turn a blanket around so the short sides go down the edge of the bed and you can tuck the long edges right underneath the mattress, might not be so easy to get them off then?

Just realised I forgot to post back here and thank everyone for their contributions. I did read them, but I was rushing out the door to work at the time. I think I'll keep DD in the sleeping bag for now and try transitioning when it gets a bit warmer. I'll just dress her warmer and warmer as the winter gets colder

When the girls moved from cots into beds we transitioned them from a sleeping bag into one of those all in one sleepsuit things that are warmer than normal pjs, and we could add layers underneath as it got colder. DD1 especially is an incredibly restless sleeper, so her blankets never (and still don't) stay on longer than 10 minutes before she's kicked them off.
