    Ouch... is this normal?

I've just started playing netball after about 12 years of doing no real exercise other than walking & some pilates/zumba.

The first week wasn't too bad. Just played half a game. Usual muscle soreness. Felt so good to be finally doing something.

Second week, Thursday training & Saturday game. One ankle hasn't stopped hurting. Got a brace, some voltaren & deep heat & have been taking nurofen when not using the voltaren. It really has not stopped, but has been easing, because I've been keeping onto it & wearing the strap/brace alot, even just for house work. Today went well.

But my heels are so bad. Right at the bottom of my heels. All this week they've been a bit sore, but since Thursday, its a constant pain with sudden bursts where I have to stop & ease it by moving it off the ground, then walking on my toes til its gone.

Also, the swelling. When I first got home & cooked dinner, my ankle (the bit that sticks out on the outside) was the size of a golf ball. I put my feet up & iced it, took some nurofen, then when I was up & down putting the kids to bed, the swelling started again, but just under my ankle, towards the back a bit. Again, like a ball. On both feet.

Is any of this just my body adjusting to all this sudden exercise? I can normally be on my feet for hours a day without any swelling at all... tonight it seems to be starting the minute I stand up. I'm not a sweller (ITMS), I've had sprained ankles & knees & I've never had swelling even close to this. Never visible anyway.

Or, could all this purely be caused by my cheap shoes Until I can afford more, I'm using $12 kmart running shoes. I'm 99% sure thats what it is, but I'm trying to deny it. I won't have money for good shoes til either c'link go through with these pay outs, or next financial year, after tax is done. That could be months away :/

I really don't want to give up, but I can barely walk once those shoes come off

Hate to say it- definitely the shoes!
Until you can afford new ones- what about gel inserts from the chemist?
    I don't think they're expensive.

Remember to warm up and more importantly cool down

I felt the same after my first netball game (not having done any fitness like that prior). It went away after some gentle stretches and walking the following day. Sorry you are hurting .

Inserts might be a good idea. Will have to see what I can get out here. No proper chemist
& don't worry, there's no escaping warming up & cooling down

Maruschke - its been 3 weeks of playing now. It seems to only be getting worse, not better

Eeks! Sorry I misread. All I can do is suggest extra toe stretching after the game. (And get on Freecycle, it is great for this kind of stuff!)

If you can't find the inserts, let me know- ill send you a pair over.

Out of curiosity, what size shoe are you?

probably should be careful - sounds a bit like planter faciatis - which can cause heel spurs.... if you start waking up and not being able to touch the floor without it hurting... thats when it sucks Can happen because of flat feet and no support in shoes - particularly after an increase in exercise..,

new shoes probably should be in the next budget if possible - otherwise you will be sore!!! rather than heel pain, it may be worth seeing if you can find something to support your arch????

but I'm not a doctor or physio or podiatrist or anything, so don't quote me.... just how my feet felt - it was a killer!! I have orthotics, which have helped immensely - but new supportive shoes regularly is a must...!!

Clover- what surface are you playing on?
Indoor? Or outdoor- asphalt or rubber?

Myturn.. I think I'm there. I did read about that & its that bad that walking to the kitchen for a drink of water for DS at 3 am kept me up in pain for about an hour. I didn't want to get up again to get nurofen coz I didn't want to make it worse

Emma - indoor & outdoor. Yesterday was the first outdoor game. I think it was concrete. thats what it felt like when my elbow hit it anyway.

As soon as I stand I can instantly feel my ankle/heel swelling. Its nasty My knees are feeling it too. I'm so glad I've always stuck to good quality running/sports shoes for the kids! Of course being me, I thought it'd be no big deal & that I could survive without.

I've been ignoring it til yesterday, convincing myself I was exaggerating...

The swelling is still rediculous My left ankle was the one giving most trouble & still is. My right is still a little swollen too. The heel pain has reduced from random bursts through the day, to pretty much just through the night if I have to get up & in the mornings.

When I wake through the night though, I'm having to take nurofen for the pain/aching & I can't sleep til it dulls it a bit. Last night was much worse. I had some mothers day drinks & of course there was no pain. So I spent the night walking around normally as if everything was fine. Til the alcohol wore off

I just want my ankles back! I want to be able to stand for more than 5 minutes! As soon as my feet touch the ground I can feel the swelling start. It hurts

I'm having this week off. I hope thats enough...

Oh that's horrible! You poor thing I'd definitely be seeing a doc and getting an X-ray if possible to rule out something more sinister. Did you say you'd tried deep heat cream?

I have been using deep heat, more before Saturday though. I've more been using the ice & voltaren since then, trying to bring down the swelling.

I've got a brace on it all the time now to try help with the swelling & it's not easy getting it on & off, so makes putting creams on it harder.

If it hasn't improved by Wednesday when the doctor is out here, I might go see him.

If new shoes are the answer, look online. Me and DF bought our asics (the fancy ones with gel soles) from an online store in the US for less than half the price we would have paid here. The most current style available in Australia is $250, I got the newer one (available in the US but not here) for $100. Still not cheap, but they are well worth it. Even if the shoes aren't the answer, I'd still suggest getting them when you can afford them. It makes a huge difference having a good quality pair of runners compared to cheapies.

Thanks to someone awesome, I do have a pair of shoes on the way I hope so bad that they help! Just have to heal properly first!

I honestly never knew that cheap shoes could cause so much pain.

I would say that if it's not feeling better by Wednesday, head to the doctor- just to rule out anything more serious.

Also, to reduce swelling- you could try lectric salts.
Bit messy, but will def reduce the swelling
