Dyson vacuum cleaners - what is the difference between them all?

I am determined to buy a good vacuum cleaner. I have only heard good things about Dysons. I borrowed my friend's DC19 the other day and it was great. This week a local retailer has the DC29 model on sale for $450. I don't know much about Dysons so I was hoping someone could help recommend a particular model, or explain the main differences between them.

    Thanks

I'm not sure of the model we have but its the barrel one with the motor head - at the time we bought it maybe four years ago it was supposedly the top in the range.

The motor head is exactly that - powered with bristles that spin around at a million miles an hour. We have a cat who sheds badly and the motorhead is brilliant for getting her fur up out of carpet. Now that the kids are older its also great for getting playdough out of rugs, mud out of carpets - you get the idea!

I personally don't like the uprights because I have neck issues and I find them just too heavy to deal with.

My folks have the Dyson that is the step down - not a motorhead but something that starts with "V" I think. I've used theirs too and while its still great, IMO its not as good as the motorhead.

Whatever model you get, make sure you get the Turbine head attachment with it, like the others have mentioned. Some models come with it, but you can buy it as an extra attachment. It's definitely a must have! Not sure which model mine is sorry, but it's the one with the white lid.

I have two! I have a big upright one (can't remember the model) and I just bought a wonderful cordless one.......sooooo easy to use and it really SUCKS.
I have to admit I use the cordless one a lot and only get the biggy out for a "full house clean" about once a week.
    I love my dysons

The DC29 has less of the cyclonic thingys (lol sorry for the technical speak there ) than the DC23's. Which means it isn't as good at picking up some of the dirt and such on the ground, we found this out first hand.

The DC23's are all the same apart from the attachments that come with it. I found the one that comes with the motor head (not the turbine head) to be the one that does the best job

Agreed. We got one that is specifically for animal hair/allergies - our two jack russell's shed like no tomorrow! Ours has the purple lid.

The turbine head is different to the motor head......we have the DC23 Motörhead. The motor head is its own model as it has power running right down to the head inside the hosing. The Motörhead gives you so much extra suction where it is needed.

I have the dyson yellow barrel. I don't have a turbo head as I have mainly hard floors with a little bit of carpet. Mine has seperate heads for the floor surfaces. I love mine. I love that you can wash the filter and don't have to buy replacement ones and the barrel can be washed as well. It does a fantastic job dealing with cat hair and general grubbiness of having pets inside too.
The only minor thing I can fault is at the end, when you take of the floor tool and put on one of the little heads to use in the car, the end of the tube is quite chunky and very hard to get into tight spots in the car.
