It's best to shop around, check out who will give you more coverage for what you use. It's also good to check who their preferred providers are and if you like them. No point getting a dentist for less but you can't stand them!

There is a Good link from the government that helps you compare http://www.privatehealth.gov.au/dynamic/compare.aspx hope it helps x

From what I understand different funds offer different benefits, so you might like to Google it and see what suits you best.
I have seen something on TV called Choosi, that help you choose your health insurance. Not sure if it's just in NSW though, so maybe Google that and have a look.

Be aware though, that they usually don't cover pre-existing, so if you've already been to the dentist for something, chances are that they won't cover this treatment. HTH.

because I am completely useless I'm going to need a little more help ;-)

If I had PHI and then went to the Dentist - Do I still have to pay? o just show that I have PHI, or do I pay then get some back?

    How is PHI worth it...

Completle newbie that knows nothing about it?

Ok so depends on the level of cover you choose how much money the fund will cover.
Ie. extras75 means they cover 75% of the bill if you go to a preferred supplier, extras85=85% etc.
Preferred providers means they will pay more of your bill than if you pick any random dentist.
For example I was getting acupuncture. I was only having to pay $15 for a session, whilst my mum who is with a different fund, and didn't recognize the acupuncturist as one of THEIR preferred providers, had to pay $50!

Does that make sense? I wouldn't think if you only want dental cover that it would be viable for you. If you use physio, optical etc then go for it.
Also, pretty sure most funds cover general dental checkups completely and then have an amount for general dental and surgery etc. depends what you want?

There are some PHI providers that have their own dentists. Australian Unity is one of these. You can go to their dentist and not pay anything (depending on treatment). Otherwise, you go to your own dentist, pay the bill and make a claim on your PHI. If the dentist has a working Hicaps nachine, they process the claim for you and you only pay the difference.

There is usually a 12 month waiting period for dental.

I have heard HBA have fantastic Dental cover for kids. I think the kids get free dental services up to age 16yrs. You could shop around and see if someone is willing to waive the 12mth pre existing or waiting period for you.
Some of them will offer no waiting period straight up.
You can try iselect website and see what they come up with.
