Hi All,
My DS has an intollerance to wheat and has leaky gut. Our house is 90% gluten free and grain free due to auto immune disease but both my DD and DS were still having bread and the odd sausage roll etc when we go out shopping.
Now that DS has to avoid wheat I am a little lost as the what they can eat when we are out and about. Obviously sandwhiches and sausage rolls are out so what do I do.
We eat almost 100% paleo/primal in our house everything is cooked from scratch we eat nothing out of a packet, we are 95% sugar, grain (apart from the occasional rice) and gluten free.
Sushi (although check sugar content of the vinegar they add to the rice)
Sashimi
Some of Nandos foods are gluten free - I think some of their chicken is & their chips are. (a guy at work just diagnosed a coeliac & Can have nandos)
That is all I can think of off the top of my head. I'll see if I can find out some more stuff from my gf tomorrow who has a gluten intolerance and see what she eats if out.
Thanks Rhichichi nandos is GF we do have that one, not sure if the kids would though, I guess I can only try, they would eat the chips but dont know about the chicken, I would prefer they have a protein option too.
Yep we pack and take fruit with us pretty much all places we go. We really forward think before we ever step out the door as most places cant cater for DS very well other than just chips. Sometimes I just take the pieces of fruit other times its made into a fruit salad etc. In summer this will probably translate more into a summer salad rather than just fruit. We also take Gluten and soy free crackers with us. We ask at most places what options they have but most cant cater for the soy side of things as well so we come undone there. Which is what lead to us planning food for outtings in the first place.
DD has had fit chips a few times and we haven't had a reaction yet. I have been caught out a few times and resorted to McDonalds chips ... No reaction so far.
I always pack a squeeze pack of yoghurt as well... That will usually tide her over until I can find something.
The above options are the kinds of things I used to pack too but since eating paleo/primal we dont have alot of fruit we keep it under 15g of fructose my DD cant handle too much fructose. The only yogurt we have is full fat natutral or greek and you cannot get that in squeezie packs and its too messy to take travelling. Thanks so much though I really do appreciate, we are just a little different to the average family lol.
I think you can buy reusable squeezie packs? That might help with the yoghurt at least
It is hard though. I can't count the amount of times someone has told me I am "mean" because DD isn't allowed a babychino or a kids meal when we go out. Easter was an absolute nightmare.
If you do have sushi, avoid soy sauce - it has gluten. Though you're avoiding rice anyway, so you probably wont.
Have you looked at the GAPS diet? There are some recipes in the Internal Bliss recipe book that can do as snacks. It's extra work, but things like making your own chips from sweet potato or beetroot could work.
Can he eat almond meal? There are often GF muffins available at cafes etc. Or can you pack small GF crackers with some cream cheese to take with you?
yep he can have almond meal thats a staple in our house, snacks are not a real issue for us its the main meal out that is, its a treat once or twice a week to go shopping and have a sausage roll or similiar. I just wish more places would make an effort to provide gluten free food thats not egg based. Some day soon they will have no choice because more and more people are finding they are intolerant.
Meercat I know exactly how you feel, I really copped it in the beginning but when family saw how my kids reacted to the food that I said they couldnt tolerate they now understand why i do it. I dont want my kids to suffer.
Also do you know the name of the reusable squeezie packs I was looking for something like that not long ago.
I have discovered the few places that serve organic whole foods, so we go there once a week as our treat.
Quinoa salad, broccoli and bean salad, roast veggies, chickpea curry are all staples for lunch there.
We also eat a lot of japanese, such as soba noodle and veggie soup (if you can get real soba noodle, not the half wheat ones). We aren't strictly gf just sugar free.
