    TV in our schools

Tell me. Are my DH and I the only parents out there that think it's inappropriate that my kids school is letting them watch Disney movies and tv in class time?

    It drives me insane

I have watched some Disney movies in class but it is part of a teaching unit of work (the same with taped tv programs).
However, this is not a regular occurrence. I teach high schoolers in a variety of subjects.

I think disney movies are inappropriate at school for young children because then it's really just glorified babysitting IMO. They would only be okay on say the last day of term when the kids are in "wind down to holidays" mode.

But I think some TV shows can have some benefit as they are short and can lead into classroom discussions/work afterwards. We used to watch Beyond the News when I was in primary school.

I show my kids at BTN meow - now you are making me feel old

Unless as PP's mentioned it is linked directly to the curriculum and there is some sort of study done on it, or else if it was the last day of term I would be asking about why this is happening, definitely should not be a regular occurrence.

As above, for educational purposes maybe but not a regular occurrence. I'd be rather annoyed if they were showing general tv shows at DD's school

I think TV is appropriate under some circumstances.
Last day of school as a bit of a treat.
    Education programs/documentaries
As part of their work (ie the movie of the book, to analyse/deconstruct it)
After a big day (excursion, sports carnival etc) that ended a tiny bit early to fill the last 30 minutes or so if the teacher didn't have any other work planned .

Utterly appropriate, provided its not being overused.

I would be concerned if, for example, it was a weekly event, and unrelated to the curriculum.

However the trend is for more and more AV and interactive materials to be used in teaching, and it is very valuable to teach children to think critically about what they are viewing.

At DD's school I'm only aware of movie watching if they've had a rainy day and can't go outside at lunchtime

But what of the rainy days are all week for a few weeks.

What the hells wrong with reading a book, colouring in, playing

Bone bone bone lazy to let five year olds watch a Disney movie as part of the terms study! She is planning on one movie a week for ten weeks!!!

was on phone earlier and couldn't see your DD's age - one movie a week so 10 for the term I wouldn't do that many movies in 2.5 years of teaching (and that would be with a full load of English teaching, my other subjects don't fit with too many movies).

Might be an idea to bring it up to the principal / deputy principal / head of junior primary's attention as that's just slack.

Is it a Friday afternoon wind down or treat - if they work hard do everything and are behaved etc it's like a reward?

Is it a study on fairytales or something?? That sounds really odd to me unless as PP's mentioned it is explicitly linked to curriculum and what they are studying??? Even so once a week seems really extreme. Yes teachers use whiteboards, technology etc. but one Disney movie a week seems a bit OTT. I would be asking how it links into the curriculum and what they are actually learning through watching them and see what she says.

I'd ask about learning goals and be very suspicious. Sounds like dodgy teaching.

If it's related to the curriculum I have no problem with it.

Once a week for ten weeks seems a bit much though. Do you have any other info? Is it part of a program they're implementing?

At my kids school if it's raining they are usually in the library with a movie going and range of other activities at their disposal. If it rains every day for a few weeks, that's what they do until the weather is fine enough to go outside. Our school also allows the kids to bring electronic games or ipods in under certain circumstances too.

Have you discussed your concerns with the teacher or the principal? There may be a good reason behind it, there may not but it's bugging you so you really need to address it with the teacher in question.

hehehe, we used to watch BTN (Behind The News) weekly when I was a little tacker, gosh, would have been 30+ years ago, TV was probably still a novelty

Disney movies on the last day or term or as a special event are ok, but I must admit I am surprised to hear its part of a weekly curriculum, with the amount of TV kids watch at home these days they really dont need to be watching it at school, there are so many alternate activities that would be more worthwhile!

Nope that sounds like lazy teaching.
I would speak to the teacher and if still not satisfied then talk to the principle.
Our kindy uses dvd while kids are finishing eating and before the nap- its about 20 mins. I think stories are better but i have made my peace with that.

Oh yeah, BTN and there was one about Robinson Curouso (sp?). Anyone remember 'let's have music' - I think it was an ABC radio production, you'd tune the old radio on the wall in every week and sing along together.
