Friends of our decided to come up to Ballarat this week for school holidays and we were planning on catching up with them for dinner tonight and also a bbq on Saturday with a bonfire - sounds good.
So last night DH rang them to organise about dinner tonight and yep it was all a go until at the last minute they told us "Our 7yr Old has Chicken Pox". So big back pedal and now dinner and catching up is cancelled I didn't want to risk exposing my kids to the pox seeing as the twins don't get the Chicken Pox immunisation until 18mths (Nov) so being exposed puts them at greater risk to getting it, add that to the fact we are going on holiday ourselves next week - and I don't need potentially 3 sick kids on a 10hr car trip - and also DS2 has had a pretty rough couple of months with being hospitalised for breathing issues and then had an allergic reation to antibiotics from a UTI which also needed a hospital visit. So all up I decided that even though we haven't seen them for about 5mths it wasn't worth the risk.
DH then wanted to know if he could maybe catch up with his friend by himself for maybe a drink, but I told him I wasn't happy for him to possibly come into contact with the germ and then bring it home. Maybe a bit of an overreation but I'm the one who has to handle the children if they become sick.
I know that they could pick up this from anyone if it is about but seeing as we know I want to reduce the chances.
Would you have done the same and stopped DH from catching up with his mate or would the risk be so minimal that it wouldn't matter. I'm just thankful they told us about the Chicken Pox before we turned up for dinner...
Yeah, me too. It may sound harsh but if you already have commitments yourself with family holidays, and if you are the parent who would end up doing the bulk of the caring for sick children, I reckon you get to make the call!
Yep. I would have done the same as you. I'm seriously over sick kids so if anyone tells me they've even sneezed over the last week then none of us have contact with them.
