My two year old has a splinter in her hand and I have very tentatively tried to get it out with no luck.
Does anyone know if you can just leave them in there and the body will naturally expel them? It is quite superficial.
She is immunized so risk of tetanus is low. I would keep an eye on her hand for obvious signs of infection.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Best thing that works for us, is to sit them in a warm bath for awhile and let the skin soften up. They come out really easily then. I have been known to leave little ones (but only in my hands, not the kids). DH thinks the kids are braver than me!
i read the other day somewhere... you make a paste out of bi car soda smother it and pop a bandaid over the top and it will draw it out???? not sure if it will work, but worth a try!!!
Thanks so much Threegraces, ladybirdflies and Roses. I think half the problem is that I am scared of hurting her.
Roses, do you know if the splinter drawing ointment is the same as normal drawing ointment? We tried that overnight but I wasn't sure how long it took.
I will give those methods a go, hopefully without tears (mine of course ;-) )
How To Remove A Splinter With Baking Soda
To remove a splinter you will need the following items:
1 tablespoon of baking soda
1 spoon or stir stick
1 cup of water
1 cotton washcloth
First, put 1 tablespoon of baking soda into the cup of water. Stir until the baking soda has dissolved. Next, soak the cotton washcloth in the baking soda solution. Apply the washcloth to your finger or hand where you have the splinter wound and allow it to soak for approximately 10 minutes. Baking soda is made up of sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate will cause the area where the splinter is to swell slightly. This swelling action will make it easier for the splinter to unlodge itself as it too will swell and rise out of the wound. You should be able to gently push your skin in the area of the splinter wound beneath the splinter and it will pop out without having to use any squeezing or tweezers.
It works wonders!!!! I have to put the t.v on for DS to sit still but I swear its awesome. We have a wooden deck that isn't in great condition so splinters are a regular occurrence in our house!
ladybirdflies, I did see that method too so I will try that one next time as it may be easier!
an old remedy is to put a blob of vegemite on the splinter and cover with a bandaid- the yeast is suppose to draw it out!!
cant hurt!! I would have a go when she is asleep!!
