In memory tattoo idea's & a few tattoo questions

I had my first tattoo done 4 weeks ago:
    https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.ph...type=3&theater

I was happy with it being my one & only, because my kids were the only thing that meant that much to me... Well, things have changed.
2 weeks ago I lost my 16 year old cousin suddenly. I'm now wanting something for her. A quote or small poem followed by her name & dates.

I have some tattoo questions though. My tatt has no shading, just the heavy purple colouring. There was a huge difference in pain for me, so I want more info on different types of tattoo's & pain levels.

The purple on mine hurt. Alot. The little bit of colouring HURT!! That bit was unbearable. The names & dates... I didn't feel a thing.

Has anyone else out there had the same heavy colouring done, compared to shading, who might be able to tell me the difference in pain? At this stage I'm just thinking the quote & name etc, on my ribs. But I might go further depending on weather or not the colouring is the same depth of pain. If it is, no way. If its anything like the names were, maybe I will.

Re: In memory tattoo idea's & a few tattoo questions

I'm on my phone so can't see the pic.
In my experience shading hurts less. Outline is deeper normally. positions are different in pain too. Bone hurts more and so does very soft parts like stomach, under arm.

Women have finer skin then men but some artists don't seem to realise this. I have very fine skin and have "freaked out" a few artists when they start a piece because of this.

Emlar (sp) cream applied 1hour before can help pain but some artists won't work with it.
I find chewing gum and red bull help. Chewing gum helps to regulate breathing and red bull helps with any blood pressure drop.

Thigh, arm and shoulder are the best places I have seen for "versus"

I think its a lovely idea to get one for her.
Would you perhaps get complementary or matching ones with her mum? (sorry if its a bad idea, I don't know the relationship there)

i only have out line/shadeing and words for mine and the outline i passed out when the bloke got near my spine (thanks to me holding my breath a bit) and the shadeing was more like a bad sunburn then the out lineing and nearing the spine hurt more then towards my shoulder. mines all gray/black though.

wow!! what an awesome tat. looks fantastic.
generally it is the outline that hurts more (including writing cause they use same needle). colouring and shading is meant to hurt less. my understanding is shading is less pressure/so not as hard so shouldnt hurt as much.
for most people it would be the location that would affect how much it hurts.

I did feel it more as he did the very top & the bit near my arm. I'm guessing my colouring did hurt more because its colouring, not shading. Even the outline of the names didn't feel half as bad as the purple outline.

I'm not sure how a verse would look on my other shoulder, but I'll have a thinkk about it. I did think about just her name on the inside of July fore arm, or on my ankle too.

I have three, two large ones.
One in a similar spot to you, but on the other side, one on my chest, starts in my cleavage and curves right around my left boob across my ribs and a memorial tatt on my wrist.
I have a very high pain tolerance so was not to freaked out by it but the two most painful spots I have had done are the solar plexus (the most painful and that was shading) and my ribs, which was more outline (seven of my kids initials)
I think it can be more the spot rather than outline or shading and it can be time. The one one my chest was 6hrs so toward the end every touch hurt!

Clover. Have you spoken to her parents about having her name inked? This might sound stupid because its your way of honouring her BUT it might be something they are against because its their child, not yours. I know I am extremely close to my brothers kids but if something happened and I got ink including their name, he would flip as that is something just for them kwim? Something symbolic would be ok, but the actual name would really pee them off. Just a thought as something to discuss with them before you do it so it doesn't cause angst for you at an already difficult time

In terms of pain, that's a really personal thing. I have several tattoos and would say I could tell the difference between solid color and shading only by the pressure he applied. There was no difference in my perception of pain/discomfort for the two actions...

I have 4 quite large pieces and one of them on my ribs, I would say if the one on your shoulder hurt that the one on the ribs would be even worse.

I agree with all the others in terms of outlining tends to be a bit more painful, however if they are shading in many different colours on the one area then this is also painful. The more time they are in one spot like Rainbowbrite said anything is going to hurt.

They use the same needles for heavy colouring as they do shading (the ones that look like 20 tiny needles all in one) so colouring/ shading pain should be about the same.

Also depends on the artist and how they work...

In memory tattoo idea's & a few tattoo questions

I have lots of tattoos. I can't even remember how many, and of them all the ribs hurt and bled the most. It was only small in comparison to my others and only took about 1/2 hr each (on each side) but I felt every single bit of it. They're situated under my arms about bra height.

I did have heavy colouring in the flowers on my belly (just under my ribs) where they tattooed over and over to get the colours to 'take' as I have olive skin and that was a close second. I was shaking all over with the pain of it after 3 hours.

The third most painful was up high on my back but I sat for that tattoo for 6.5 hours without food and with 2 small breaks so I think I was completely depleted of endorphins by that stage and that made it worse.

It also makes a difference if you've got some padding on the area. I felt my tattoos less when I was a bigger girl. I feel them twice as much now.

My arms were walks in the park by comparison. I have a tattoo that goes right around my upper arm and even that didn't hurt as much as my ribs.

I've heard that the sternum area is the worst but that's one place I am not tattooed so can't compare.

I have right down my sternum tattoo and the solar plexus was the most painful place I have tattooed (I have ribs, back, wrist)

BG, I did mention it to them, but didn't think about her name being a problem. They didn't say anything at the time, but they haven't had much time yet, so I'll give it some time & ask again.

It was the meatier bits I reckon hurt the most. I also had the piercer do mine so he had to stop & start to do piercings & answer questions. Not much fun.

I think I'll stick to script, or try numbing cream. I don't have a high pain tolerance at all. I deal with pain quietly, but I feel it!

Another question... How do tattoos without black outline go? Her colour was lavender. We all wore lavender somehow for her funeral. Maybe just the name or script in lavender alone??
