Just been put out apparently
Link wont work for me.![]()
This was issued in Sept 2011, not just now. Common sense not to buy cheap beads that might break.
Yeah I bought the expensive ones really good double knotted each bead and so far so good , I would think you would want to know it was genuine anyway otherwise it might not work
I googled. Now Im all angry at stupid people. Lol
A bit of common sense and careful sourcing goes a long way.
The authorities would be better off warning about dodgy necklaces and how to spot them than telling everyone they are ALL dangerous.
There's a hoax one going around facebook, I think? SIDS and kids did issue a warning some years ago, but as others have said, it's about ones that may break into many small pieces where I guess there'd be a choking hazard.
Can't open the link but if this is the one doing the rounds on FB then it's a hoax. As noted on FB it is not SIDS if there is a cause of death ie choking. Public scaremongering makes me mad because it is usually the uniformed that are sucked into this and then continue to share and spread unnecessary fear.
I saw the warning on face book twice yesterday. About a 10 month old losing his/her life to SIDS due to an amber teething necklace.
'A 10 month old baby has just died from SIDS on the NSW central coast &
the coroner has put the cause of death down to amber teething necklaces.
I encourage anyone that has one around their babies necks to take it off ASAP!
Get a bracelet or an anklet.'
My comment on both: 'Not true SIDS. True SIDS has no cause of death. It is recommended that parents take an amber necklace off when a baby is sleeping.
Its called common sence really.
Yep, all of that ^^^
When I saw it on my cousin's FB, I desperately wanted to comment "this is the dumbest thing I've read this week" but I had to hold myself back
All good amber necklaces have a safety clasp anyway, so it's rather difficult for them to easily strangle the child. I never really bothered taking Amelia's off, though I knew it was recommended. The way she sleeps, and the awkward length of it, means it may have been more dangerous if I tried to put it on her wrist. It doesn't loop around properly and would've slipped off into the bed. Besides, we bed share and I'm always hyper-aware of her breathing![]()
Sorry didn't think it would hurt to put up
I understand Jellybean, and this is why most people pass these things on. Unfortunately, at least 9/10 messages of these types that get passed on in emails or fb statuses are hoaxes. Sometimes there's a grain of truth, but often they're full of misinformation. It's really easy to check the veracity of messages you get, though. Just copy and paste part of the message into google and see what happens....
The one going around on FB is driving me nuts. Spelling and grammatical errors, incorrect cause of death and 'xx' at the end yet everyone believes it??!!
It's not the fb one anyway its just a warning off SIDS website
I am getting massive amounts of search traffic for the keywords for that damn thing. Baby dies from amber teething necklace etc. Gah! I've just updated my article.

Is the Facebook one definitely a hoax? I don't believe any of those those things I see on Facebook, but I am reluctant to comment on anyone sharing it due the the sensitive nature if it turns out to be true. I certainly can't find anything online about it.
I don't mind some of those things I really hate the ones with horrible pictures of sick kids
Generally people should check something is genuine (quick google search can help) before reposting things. It's like the Facebook/online version of gossiping
I bought DS3 an amber necklace approx 2 weeks ago - must admit, I did a google search on amber necklace deaths as a token effort at "research". Nothing came up. Having said that, now that I've got one I can't really figure out how the necklace could be dangerous if used with a commonsense approach. The double knotted ones look safe, and other than that I've been schooling my older boys on not pulling on DS3's necklace. DS3 has his on 24/7 (albeit he got a heat rash under his chin/neck area a few days ago so it's off at the moment in case it's irritating him).
