    Constant grunting in her sleep....

The last couple of days, DD2 has been grunting an awful lot in her sleep, to the point where she doesn't seem to be sleeping soundly. DD1 did this a lot and it was often linked to her reflux and having gas. In this case, I'm trying numerous burping positions and getting nothing. She's fine when sleeping on me but as soon as she goes down the grunting begins.... She often seems to be sleeping (although restlessly), so i dont know whether to leave her and try to block it out and sleep myself or continue to get her up and try to burp her in her sleep. any advice or experience?

Chody my DS1 was the same with his silent reflux. DS2 has the occasional sleep where he grunts and carries on.. but he wont burp unless its really bothering him. im interested in hearing others thoughts cause I am kinda winging it at the moment..

Hmmm.....so it might be a reflux thing again? At least we don't have the masses amount if spew (yet!). It's funny, we raised the top of her bassinet tonight and it doesn't seem quite as bad (so far) - something we did for DD1s reflux.....

    Anyone else have experience?

im not thinking reflux....it seems more wind related. or maybe just a newborn thing. waiting to hear other opinions!

I'm thinking I might get some infacol today to try.....used it with DD1 and it seemed to help the wind....

My DS had silent reflux and it wasn't until he was 4-5 weeks that I realised while watching him carefully that he was bringing up and swallowing it down so there was not heaps of spew. If raising the cot and sleeping upright helps then it is a possibility worth investigating. I also found that trying to burp him made things worse as it made him bring up the painful acid so I would just sit him up for a while after a feed and not burp him. Good luck reflux sucks!

Thanks Lana. I'll need to look out for it. Reflux runs in both mine and DH's family (I had it as did he and his two siblings). DD1 had it really bad. Hers involved lots of screaming and vomit. Once she was on losec we lost the screaming and just coped with the vomit. I wouldn't be surprised if DD2 was diagnosed with it based on the history. I might try and watch her and see what happens.

my DD usually grunts a lot too ( her grunting on one side, DH snoring on the other) then farts and the grunting usually stops then,so maybe there is a connection.

My sisters DS farts so much he wakes himself up constantly, I think he is a grunter too.

I hope she doesn't have reflux chody!

Sounds like reflux to me. The amount of spew has nothing to do with the severity of the reflux. For example, my son has reflux and spews massively, however his reflux pain is well controlled with losec. My daughter was not a spewer, hers was silent and was in horrific pain, which medication did little to fix.

My DD did this when she was little. I don't know what it was? She seemed to be asleep, anyway. I just learned to live with it

Thanks for sharing your experiences everyone. I'll see if the infacol makes a difference tonight....I'm kinda hesitant to think its reflux as I don't think she is in pain....she's now screaming like DD1 did, she's just unsettled.... It sometimes sounds like a grunting noise and other times like she's trying to clear her throat or get something up (like a burp??).

    Hi Chody,
My 7 mo DD was a massive grunter in her sleep. So much so that DH had to move into the other room so he could get some sleep before work. I was also concerned about reflux and raised the bassinet, but she didn't really seem to be in pain, just restless. I recorded the noises on my phone to play for the GP and Clinic nurse. They also thought she was a very noisy baby and predicted she would probably just grow out of it. SHe did grow out of it completely (i think somewhere between 4-8 weeks).
    Hope its not reflux.

I hope it's something she grows out of. That would be great!
