    Cholecalciferol bolus dose after birth

Last night I was told that due to my severely low vitamin D levels, my baby would require a cholecalciferol bolus dose when born.

Ive never heard of it before and was wondering if anyone else has? Or if their babies were also given it.

All I know is its a syrup that baby sucks off their finger/glove and will last until around 4 months if age

What are your vitamin D levels? Do you/they know why they are low?

That is the changing way of giving baby a boost due to mum being vitamin d deficient as the daily pentavite for 1 year for bf babies is not always given.

Low vit d can lead to ricketts in children and issues with bones teeth. In adults can increase risk of osteroporosis.

Majority of people are vit d deficient due to slip slop slapping so
    Well.

Feeb - so it's nothing to be concerned about and perfectly safe for my baby?

PumpkinZulu - on my antenatal card it says my levels are 36 @12 weeks and 42 @28 weeks (means nothing to me). I take 3 Ostelin vit D a day as per their recommendations. No idea why they are low and only raise a little, the hospital had hoped taking 3 pills a day would have bumped it much higher, but wasn't the case and now told me bub will be required this dose if I consent to it. Of course I will if its needed to benefit their health

Nope nothing to worry about just means you don't need to give pentavite which smells and tastes fowl to baby for a year. This way ensures baby has enough.

My GF in mums group gave her bub the 4 month long one...bit of a PITA but she felt that there was nothing to be too worried about

I managed to dodge it (i had level of 19 that went to somewhere in the late 40s and was given the all clear for DD2). bummer that such a boost for yourself didnt do the trick! maybe some walks in the sunshine are in order
