    Melbourne private schools

    Hi there,

I 've been based in London for a couple of years, and am contemplating returning with my four year old. Since I've been gone for quite sometime, I realise Australia has changed dramatically, with things now alot dearer.

As the sole caregiver and earner, what kind of salary would I need to be on to live comfortably renting, paying private school fees and saving for a house deposit? I'm talking about, Modest lifestyle, not eating out all the time, but also able to go an an annual trip, and be able to give my son most things in addition to the extra curricular activities and car. This is for one adult and one child.

In the UK I can do this quite easily on a mid salary.

    Cheers

Costs of private schools vary alot. We have been looking at schools lately in the outer south east and they vary from $4000 a year to $15,000 a year depending on school. Take a look at the myschools website it will tell you how they go with their Naplan results, if they get results above or below the average etc. I can't help in regards to renting etc.

If you're not tied to any particular area why not move to a suburb where the public school has a good reputation?

There are good public secondary schools in Camberwell, Glen Waverley, Balwyn, Ringwood...

I would expect to pay $450 - $550 a week for a modest two bedroom flat inner city. You would need at least $50k for a house deposit. Private school fees $4k-$30k, depending on type of school you are talking. It will be a little less for primary.
