DS has supra umbilical hernia and needs surgery - anyone else?

We thought it was just an umbilical hernia which apparently 90% of the time fixes itself but it turns out he has a supra umbilical hernia ie. hernia above his belly button that requires surgery. The surgeon said to get it done ASAP, which will be in the next few months. He is only just 6 months which seems so young to me but he said it doesn't make any difference after 6 months of age. It's a day procedure and they go in through the belly button.
I can't imagine how traumatic this is going to be for him, fasting from 2am to start with.
Anyone been there with a baby?

I don't have any advice, but couldn't read and not reply.

You might be surpised at how well he copes with it, I'm sure it will be extremely hard on you as well. Good luck

My 4th DS has inguinal hernia's on both sides. The first was repaired at 12 months (smack on, day after his birthday), He also had his testi pinned down also.
I hate to say it but it really was a traumatic event for him. It took a long time for him to be comfortable going into a clinical environment. On the day I opted for a later start as I had a 2 hour travel to get there & thought it was the better option, but it meant our 10am slot didn't happen till closer to 1pm & he had to be fasted also. Getting him to fall asleep with out the boob was so hard on him. In hind sight I should have just fed him but at the time no one could tell me when he would go in.

The 2nd surgery at 18 months was a bit easier as I sucked up the early start & was first up.

Surgery wise he was fine, recovery he was fine, the wounds healed fine & I can't even see a scar with out really looking for it.

But yeah hate to say it, it was hard for him. I would think at 6 months it may be easier so fingers crossed he get seen too ASAP

Thanks for your replies. Efjay I figure it may be easier on him younger rather than waiting. A dr friend me mentioned that he thought recent research shows babies do better if breastfeed 2 hours before surgery. I'm going to explore this idea!!

Has he had it fixed yet? Just wondering because my ds had a right inguinal hernia repair at 6 days then his left repaired last week at 6weeks. He also has an umbilical hernia above his belly button. The surgeons and pediatricians I've seen over the past 2 weeks have all said that these do not need to be fixed at this age. They said young children have barrel shaped bellies and the muscle can create an opening. As they get to about 4 their belly lengthens and the muscles join back and hole closes and hernia disappears. They said they will only operate if its still there by school age. Hope that helps
