    Night Coughing

We are working on about 4 hours sleep all night, so while I could look for a thread I doubt I'd be able to find it at the moment anyway.

We have been up with the 5 year old most of the night. The poor possum doesn't have a cold, but does have a terrible cough but only at night. Its not a coupy cough just a continuous, something is irritating my throat sort of cough. We used the ventolin but it didn't releave it at all, tried sitting as upright as possible and again no luck. I even tried the benadryl dry tickly cough mixture (the only one I had in the house) and still no luck. The cough appeared in the early hours of yesterday morning, stopped during the day and reappeared as soon as we went to bed. Its fine this morning.

Doesnt appear sick at all, just has this persistent night time cough at the moment.

Any ideas on how to relieve the symptoms at night so that my poor poss can get some shut eye?

    Thanks

Have you tried Zyrtec or Claratyne, could it be a post nasal drip that is irritating the throat?

    Night Coughing

We've tried heating the room for my dd when she has the same kind of cough, Vicks vapor rub on the feet with a pair of socks over the top, I've found phenergan works better than cough medicine - sometimes its more of an allergy cough than a sickness cough, and the sedative side helps her get a better sleep.
A spoon full of honey sometimes helps coat the throat a little to keep it from drying out too

I was going to say postnatal drip as well. We had this a lot until DS went on a preventer regularly. We also found another allergy around the same time and changed his diet.

We have the same problem here. I am shattered from lack of sleep at the moment.

I went and spoke to the chemist and he said clarantine an hour before bed once a day, Baby vicks on DS's chest, coupled with saline nasal spray and the vapouriser.

Will see how it all goes and let you know if you like?

Warm apple juice or a teaspoon of honey can soothe irritated coughs.

Keeping the bedroom warm (with a heater) & moist (with a vaporizer) can help enormously too.

Also, if you can't work out what might have caused it, it could be worth getting your little one checked out @ the dr to rule out asthma.

The clarantyne worked miracles! DS was asleep before we got home and only stirred enough to take the claratyne and his bottle.

He slept from 7pm -5am woke for a bottle and fell back to sleep and is still sleeping next to me now

I hope you got some sleep last night too black cat ?

Last night was pretty awful until midnight when I clued in that the room had dropped in temperature so closed the door to keep the warmth in. After that he slept reasonably soundly until 8am. I'll try the humidifier tonight to see if that helps too. I gave him some honey which didnt help as well as the polaramine. Ill try the zyrtec tonight (if there is one thing we are not lacking in this house its antihistamines lol) and see if that makes a difference. From listening to him last night I think he is having issues with stuff running down the back of his throat moreso than anything asthmatic. The ventolin hasn't made any impact.

    Thanks for asking BubbaT
