    Amby baby Hammock

    Hello.
I'm a soon to be a mum of two - my first is 9 though so I really am starting all over again.
I've been reading about the Amby hammocks and they sound really good but I am looking for some opinions about it. Is it really as good as the website portrays?

    Thank you in advance.

Hi Jamigem, someone asked this question on Pinky McKay's Facebook page last week and lots of people replied with their opinion. Worth a look!

If you have any specific questions about Amby baby hammocks, please feel free to ask

    Hey
Thank you guys for your replies.
I've had a look at Pink Mckays FB page and read all the comments. Thanks heaps.

I've decided to buy it, but now have to deal with my sister in law who wants to refute it by showing me all the stuff against it. Yay for me!! - NOT.

    Thanks again!

She is a nurse who has a superiority complex. It doesn't matter that I too know how to research, and have studied Psychology- whatever 'knowledge' she has, will always 'trump' mine! Or this is how it comes across anyway, and how I've always interpreted it.

Anyways, she wants to show me the fair trading website that says not to get hammocks or slings for babies; as well as the SIDS website that recommends the use of cots etc.

As well as telling me about the American deaths etc etc.

I'm more open minded and read that research very differently to her.
Is it true that the Amby was designed along with the SIDS association?

I guess I need more help with figuring out how to deal with her; because I'm sure this is not the only thing we will disagree on, and I'm already fed up with her! Haha but I do appreciate your help in combating her 'research'.

It is difficult dealing with a nurse who is set in her ways! SIDS & Kids will only ever recommend a cot with firm fitting mattress, they do not endorse any other products. The Amby Baby Hammock promotes safe sleeping as it keeps babies positioned on their back. The constant natural motion is said to prevent the build up of carbon dioxide around baby (a possible cause of SIDS). The new design Amby Air was designed based on advice from a representative from Standards Australia. It meets all the relevant parts of the British and European safety standard for cradles and cribs, so it is definitely a safe product! It is used in hospitals, mother and baby units and day care centres all around the world and is recommended by many paediatricians, midwives, neurologists, chiropractors, etc. due to their many health benefits.

    I hope that helps!

Yeah, I'm finding it very difficult. And I'm sure it will only get worse from here on in!

Does the new Amby Air meet Australian Standards?

It is unlikely that they would be selling a product so widely in Australia that does not meet the minimum Australian Standards requirements. It would have been recalled or an alert put out if it didn't meet the Standard. You should be able to confirm the particular Standard by contacting the manufacturer.

There actually is no Australian safety standard for baby hammocks, there is also no Australian standard for bassinets! I have been advised that if there ever was a safety standard for baby hammocks in Australia, that it would be based heavily on the Amby baby hammock due to it's extensive testing over the past 24 years. Standards Australia were consulted with the new design Amby Air though, as safety is Amby's number one priority. That is why it has been tested to the relevant British and European safety standards for cribs and cradles, to prove to parents that it is a safe baby product.

So trish, why won't Australia create a standard for bassinets and hammocks?
It just seems stupid to me!!

Yeh I read on the SIDS website that bassinets are also considered not safe, and yet no one goes on and on about them! so frustrating!

I could be wrong - Trish may know more - but I think the reason for bassinets not meeting safe sleeping guidelines is because they have solid sides. The recommendation is to have as much air flow around baby as possible, and so a bassinet restricts that a bit. A standard for bassinets would probably say they need mesh sides or cot-like sides.

Just another reason the new Amby Air is a good one I guess, it already has mesh all the way down to the mattress. I'm just disappointed I can't afford a new one and have the old kind!

I reckon it'll be 2 years in September or October. DD was in it at about 4 months and I wish we'd gotten it sooner! I've gotten it out again for this next bub and he'll be in it from day 1.

Go the Amby! DD is sleeping in hers right now after stirring and then resettling herself by bouncing her legs which makes the Amby bounce.
I don't know how we'll manage Trish when she grows out of it soon

Can i ask how you have found the transition for your bubs once they grow out of the hammock? I like the idea, but would be worried once they no longer fit in the hammock the still cot wouldnt be what they are use to?

There is no Australian standard yet because there aren't many baby hammocks on the market and Standards Australia just don't have the funds to create a new standard for them. It is very expensive to create a new standard. I would welcome a standard because there are some very cheap and nasty knock-offs that I know aren't safe at all. The Amby mattress has passed the new proposed Australian and New Zealand standard for baby mattress firmness which is fantastic. The knock-off hammocks have very flimsy futon-style mattresses that fold around babies heads. Very dangerous in my opinion!

Frangipani Lou - I'm so glad you're still loving your Amby! My eldest slept in his until he was 23 months of age, so there is no rush to move her out if she's still happy in there! We used two springs as he got older which could support up to 24kg .

AlligatorsMum - All three of my babies slept in an Amby hammock and transitioning them was really easy. My younger two transitioned between 9-12 months of age by having one nap a day in their cot and another sleep in their hammock. Over time they had more sleeps in their cot until one day then just slept full time in their cot. My eldest at 23 months went straight from his hammock to sleeping in a toddler bed. He didn't complain at all, I thought it would be a difficult transition, but he took to his bed immediately! I have had many other parents tell me it was much easier than they thought too
