    kids memories

my 3.5 yearold recently described her 1st birthday.

she also told me that when she was in my tummy, there were two babies, and one just gone. this is a possibility, but not sure if dd was remembering or just chatting .

have your kids recalled things that you didn't think they would remember?

Wow, that's amazing! If she can describe her first birthday to you then she certainly has a better memory than most.

My DS1 (5.5) can recall things that happened a year or so ago but not much further back than that.

It sounds like your DD may have a bit of a gift there

Definitlely. In the last year or so Lachlan has come out with some doozies. He is 9 and was telling me about stuff that happened when he was 2.

Both big girls have great memories.
DD1 who is almost 6yrs, remembers things from before she was 1yr. DD2 who is 3, almost 4, made references recently that surprised us. Both have talked about being in my tummy at different stages, dd1 had some very interesting comments about being in my tummy. DD2 recently asked me about something that she had with her in my tummy, but it didnt come out with her, and she now missed it, she was very certain of it but she couldnt name what it was. Then she backed that up with telling us about the first house she lived in with us, the one we moved out of when she was 3months old, but we havent taken the girls back, or talked about what that house looked like.

Wow, I'm surprised it is so common for children to remember back that young!

Having said that she can't remember what she did at kinder yesterday so it is pretty random what she remembers!

I am constantly amazed at what they remember! I can't even think of anything now but they have shocked us with some stuff. Or if I show them a photo from a long time ago they will tell me where we are and what they were doing and what they said or were thinking at the time.

My DD1 has an incredible memory. She is 4.5 but will tell us memories from when she was 2 frequently. She remembers when I was pregnant and wanted a specific cereal then a year later I wanted cereal again (hadnt had it in between) and she said oh that's not the one mummy had before, it's this one!

I think she gets it from me, just this weekend my mum was talking about friends of hers who I hadn't seen since I was about 8 and I said oh and described the dinner, the movie we watched and the house completely from that time we went there... so that's 18yrs ago with no going over the recollection of it in between those two points. I can remember lots of memories from back to around 4 myself but then it starts getting sparse with only a few from being 3 and only one before that off the top of my head. Who knows what is lurking to be triggered like that one night from being 8 was this weekend though!

My oldest memory is from sometime before I was 18months old. I remember driving down a long drive way with trees along the edge and then remember looking up and my grandma looking down at me cooing st me. Its like im in a capsule so I could have been younger, for years I thought it was a dream until I described it in detail to mum who said that I was describing my grand parents old house which they moved out of when I was 18months (so we know it had to be before then).
Its faded over the last few years but I try to hold onto it so think about it often. Its also very dim...like a dimmer sitch is on low itms.

My first memory is similar to yours TT, I described it to my mum and she knew exactly what I was talking about, my grandparents house that I only ever went to once, they moved out when I was 9 months old so mum and dad (who are separated and I had the same conversation with at seperate times) both agree that I was 3-4 months old (first Christmas/New Years time) I have several early childhood memories (before I was 4) as well, but that's my earliest.
