To be honest the best way for someone to take temp at home is under the arm for younger kids and orally for older ones (as long as they haven't eaten or drank anything recently as that can effect results) other ones can be so inaccurate.
Sorry not to answer your original question but thought it'd be good to mention
My Braun's gone on forever and I think I've only ever changed the batteries once.
It's an ear one though. I'd love a no touch one but all the reviews I read and all the nursing staff I worked with were never a fan.
DS is not a fan of ear ones either, it's a struggle, but I can't get him to keep still long enough for oral.
I've been wondering about this too. I used to have 2 thermometers and just out of curiosity one day I took DSs temp with both and got 2 completely different readings. I ditched them both and haven't used one since. But was thinking with a new babe I should probably have one...
Edit: sorry, I just realised that was completely unhelpful LOL
Both underarm ones - one was an Omron and the other some Disney thing.
I also have Braun Ear - always good, still on first set of batteries 4 years on, always seems to match temps taken at doctors (although they use Braun ear one too :-))
I thought that underarm was least accurate as could read up to one degree less, but is the easiest with those too young for oral ones.
"Taking an underarm temperature
Taking a temperature under the arm is called an axillary temperature. Taking a temperature under the arm gives the least accurate reading. Under arm temperatures can be up to 0.5° to 1.2°C lower than actual body temperature. However, taking your child's temperature under the arm is usually easier and faster than struggling to get an oral temperature from a wriggling and/or crying child."
Fyi the most accurate place for core temp id rectal. As long as you are aware axilla reading will be lower. Same as oral is affected by cold/warm drinks.
In terms of thermometers im using one I 'borrowed' from work years ago. ..its still going strong tho =p
People are also notorious for misplacing tympanic (ear) thermometers as it actually has to hit the tympanic membrane of the ear for an accurate reading.
My kids had temps that high recently Olive I didn't treat them at that stage and just kept a close eye on them.
When I was working as a nurse (have been a stay at home mum for awhile now) which was awhile ago now if we got a high reading on ear we had to do it the other way. Also GP once told me if you have an ear infection it will give false reading also.
we have a vicks 8 second one. cost about $20 and its the best thing I have ever bought. so much so that they are now starting to be used in hospitals.
like a pp said the ear ones can be inaccurate. they are now starting to be banned in childrens wards in hospitals for that reason. paediatricians actually prefer under the arm temps or rectal if they child will allow
