    UTI's

Dd is 3 & has a uti. It's a nightmare. She's refusing to wee & it's at the point I'm going to have to hold her down & force the antibiotics down her throat.

Ideas? I've tried bribery. I've explained that she needs to let go & take the medicine or it'll get worse. Nothing is working.

    Re: UTI's

    Huge hugs xx

I went through this with my DS who had recurrent UTI's across the space of about 6 months. We ended up having to use Bactrim and did a huge course and then a small once a day dose for a few months. Since then we've been good.

I am assuming the pain is causing her to not want to wee. Is your DD toilet trained? If so, perhaps offering a nappy might take the pressure off her bladder when she is weeing (because it can be done standing up)

Which antibiotic is she on? My DS was shocking with any antibiotic - especially the syrupy ones. The ONLY thing that worked for him was 1) holding his nose 2) taking the meds and while still holding his nose he took a mouthful of milo to drown the taste.

Star charts with a prize at the end of the dose was a winner as well.

UTI's are hard because they can go to the kidneys if much time is left from the time they get sick to treatment - so it's important to get onto it before she ends up in hospital.

    Re: UTI's

She's much better today. Still avoiding the toilet, because it hurts, but not scared & in tears like she was. Most of her wee's are in the shower. Just because it's harder to hold on in there :/

Her fever is gone, with bribes I got all 4 doses into her yesterday. Not done as well today, might only make 3, but better than none.

Hoping this is her one & only. I've never had a uti. Neither have any of my other kids. So I have no idea how it even feels for her.

    Re: UTI's

Glad to hear she's on the mend.

UTI's are horrible pressure in the bladder, burning/sharp pain when weeing then a constant "bladder full" feeling even if it isn't.

Poor baby. Fingers crossed it's a first and last!

    Re: UTI's

aww poor poss- give her some ural and that will stop it burning when she has to pee- will make it heaps more comfy to wee
also some cranberry juice as it helps as well
the more fluids you can get into her- the less it will sting
she will have to go if she is well hydrated as she wont be able to hold it in
also salt baths work a treat as well- heaps easier for them to pee in the bath too
i am an expert at UTI's with kids- my son has had mega UTI's due to his kidneys not working properly since birth and is on proforlatic anti-biotics still to this day- so any questions etc
    please just ask away
UTI's are very common at age 3- they are starting to independently toilet and thats where infection can occur very easily . If she gets another one, they may suggest a renal u/s to rule out things such as reflux etc.
    hope she feels better soon
also put ice cream topping in with the anti-biotics to make it more pleasant to taste!!! choc topping with anti-biotics is yummo lol

    Re: UTI's

Thanks so much. I've been pushing the water into her, trying to explain that it'll hurt less.
Because she was a bit dehydrated, she was asking for more than usual, but not enough to flush it out.
I bought some cranberry juice yesterday, but she wasn't too keen on the taste.

The nurse mentioned that she might need to be wormed. Sometimes that can cause UTI's? So I'll get some combantrin soon & do that as well. Just to cover all bases.

I'm so glad that after 8 days this is hopefully almost over. I'm pretty sure we're both keen on avoiding it again.

    And hopefully this is it

    Re: UTI's

I was going to suggest cranberry juice too. Even if you dilute it for her, might help future ones too.
Not nice at all =( sorry can offer more help... Spock loves taking medicine....mind you she has only really had panadol etc..nothing too strong. But if we give it to her in a syringe and let her do it she laps it up, she is less keen if I do it for her, so maybe letting her do it? My mum use to also crush medication for my brother and put it in an small ice cube tray (cubes were only like 2cm x 1 cm) and fill them up with chocolate, or strawberry milk or something, so he just had to have a cube a dose and he was happy to have it then. Just some other methods I guess.
I hope it clears up soon
