I'm just wondering what exactly is involved with this? DD will be 4 in June, so we've just gotten a reminder from our Dr to book her in with the clinic nurse. The reminder says the appointment will take an hour! What are they going to do?
Nothing more than a regular check up from memory - I'll have DD3's to do in March. But with the other 3 that have already passed the ripe old age of 4, they checked them over, weighed them, measured them and asked some basic developmental questions. Then gave them the needle. Dunno if my GP's have been slack but it didn't take more than 15 minutes - max.
Thanks Arimeh That's pretty much what I was expecting, but thought how on earth can that last an hour? Unless they're thinking at this age the injection part might take a while. Then we always have to wait 15 minutes after to check for a reaction.
The hour might be to ensure you factor in the waiting time after the injection...
DDs four year old check was basically a check that she'd seen the gp in the past few months and had been weighed/height recorded, asked if we had eye or ear concerns (she was already under care of optimetrist) and asking her a couple of questions to check her speech and comprehension. If we were there more than five minutes I would be surprised. The wait after the jab was harder than any of it cos the little girl before dd was very upset and dd kept asking why she was crying if she got given a lollipop, why wasn't she happy etc.
We had ours as the MCHN check up so vaccination was done by council completely separately. The check probably did take about half an hour. There was an eye check (basic one that they would then refer you to the optometrist) - got her to do some tasks (with bricks), asked her lots of questions (checking speech and comprehension) plus the height and weight check. Asked me a load of things and checked we knew what we were doing regarding kinder etc.
Thanks everyone Where we go, there's a whole separate nurses area. They do the check and the needle so we won't actually see a gp at all.
Now that you've mentioned it Jaycee I think last time I was there for DSs one year vaccinations, DD was there and they mentioned about a sight and hearing check. And I think the hour would count the 15 minutes waiting after. I'm pretty sure she'll be alright with the actual needle, she saw DS get his and she's not scared of Drs or nurses, she knows they help you stay healthy.
Wow mine must have been really slack - mine asked if we had any concerns about vision or ears but didn't check anything or do any testing - you get reminded to take them for a hearing test when they are in prep though. Well, our last school did.
DD had her height and weight, sight and hearing checked, was asked questions and did some balancing/hopping. She has other issues so we discussed our Peadiatricians advice etc.
Then she had the shots, was very brave, and we went out for a hot chocolate sundae.
DD has already had her vax. She turned 4 back in October. But she'll be attending kindy this year, so the MCHN will do the health check by taking them all from class & getting them all done while at school. Easier for her to keep up with who has & hasn't been done.
DS had height, weight, eye sight & hearing done. It did take about half hour just for those. But then I had to call centrelink to let them know it'd been done. No one passed on the info & I had no idea until supp payments came through at a lot less than I expected.
Ours was done at kindy (not the vax, but the health check). Height, weight, simple sight and hearing and speech checks. DD also drew a couple of pictures & had to cut along a squiggly line with some scissors. Not much more to it than that.
