Stiff neck after some sort of insect (possible bee) bite?

Have called Nurse online and said to take to doctors so am doing that at 7:00 but just after any experiences.

DS (3.5) was at daycare today - apparently he suddenly went quiet and sat still and then said his neck was stiff and a bee had flown into his neck (he didn't cry at all - I thought bee stings hurt??).

Daycare called me but he had eaten lunch and seemed generally ok (no swelling or anything and they were unclear if he had been bitten etc). Later in the afternoon he was not quite himself and complaining of a stiff neck and holding his head to one side and won't move it the to straight ahead or the other way - even when they tried to 'trick' him etc. So we picked him up - he is still the same - maintaining the same position. I can't see a puncture mark from a bite/sting - but there is perhaps a little lump??

Could he have cricked his neck by moving it suddenly when an insect landed on his neck perhaps? It happened at about 11:30 and hasn't shown any signs of improvement - he has had Dymadon and cold pack on it. The position of his head looks quite severe for it to just be a strain, but then again at his age he might not be willing to try move it more??

He is not showing any other signs of sickness apart from being a bit fed up (oh and he didn't finish an icecream)

    Any ideas???

Poor tyke. How was the check up? I would have thought if it were a bee he would have yelped when it happened. And that there would be evidence of a bight if his carers checked soon after he complained of the neck. DD1 reacts strongly to bee stings so she gets a lot of swelling and redness quite extensively around the sting site (twice bitten here). E.g. She stood on a bee once and her entire foot and ankle area and a small part of her calf was up like a balloon. She is not allergic but not at the mild end of the scale either so I am not sure what a 'mild' reaction would be... Could he have mistaken a bee for a fly or some other insect? Or a flying ant?

If his neck is out of whack from moving it sharply it could be that he just doesn't want to move due to pain. From personal experience I can say it's quite painful to move when your neck is messed up. It may be going in to his head etc

Poor dude. What did the dr say? I've been stung by a bee once and there wasn't much of a reaction but it hurt a lot and there was a definite puncture mark.

Doctor thinks has just strained, cricked his neck - he thinks the lump is coincidence - he isn't asleep yet but is more settled.

I think something bit him - probably not a bee (because I do think this would hurt more and be a puncture mark (although DS does not seem to complain much about real issues, non-issues are another matter :-), so who knows - the info from daycare was mixed because in the morning one carer phoned me and from what she said there was some mark at that point and the one who phoned later didn't know I had been previously contacted) and that caused him to hurt his neck, and now he is just refusing to even try and move it.

He whimpered alot when doctor tried to get him to move it and felt around. I am hoping he relaxes over night and is better in the morning - we are meant to be going to see Tiger who came to tea.

Seems just the same today - he whimpered loads overnight everytime he tried to move - but did sleep. With a 3.5 year old is it just a matter of wait it out - or is there someone you can see (e.g. if my neck hurt that bad I would go see osteopath).

He is in reasonable spirits though.

Maybe see an osteo or chiro. Or you could call the nurse on call again and see what they have to say. I hope he is better soon.

Got him in at an Osteo yesterday, is a joint sprain and it is very locked (yesterday he looked like quasimodo today slightly better) - will need a couple of treatments. He is pretty ok with it, remarkably, I think it would make me pretty grumpy.

Was interesting seeing an osteo work with a 3.5 year old - they aren't the easiest of patients - thankfully this one knew his superheros so that helped.
