Red Ear - What is it?

Does anyone know what this might be?

My DS's ear yesterday afternoon went really red, it almost looked purple at one point and looked a little puffy and it felt warm. It then over the next few hours went back to normal and was fine this morning, then this afternoon it went red again (not as bad as yesterday) and was warm to the touch.
DS reckons it doesn't hurt and he is fine in himself, eating normally, sleeping well, heaps of energy.
Is it likely to be an ear infection?

    TIA

Maybe he was bitten by something that doesn't hurt? When DS has ear infections, his ears don't go red, he starts running at the eyes and nose, thats when we know its time for the doc..

It could be a mild allergy/reaction to food?

My sisters ear always goes bright red when she eats chocolate.

Mel - They day at the vegie shop thought he'd be bitten, but i cant find any lump or mark
Lulu2 - I'll have to write down what he eats as he hasn't had anything today that he had yesterday.

Thank you both, i'll take him to the Dr's tomorrow and get it checked

Possibly teething? My DD gets quite red ears when she's teething.

This may be a silly question, but did it happen after a sleep? I know my ds1s ear is always very red for a couple of hours if he sleeps with it "folded" in on itself...

I think if it was an alergy it would be both ears wouldn't it?

Dee73 - Nope wasn't after a sleep, the weird thing about it is that there isn't anything obviously in common with both days.

Sounds like he was bitten to me!
Most of the time you will see where the bite mark but then there are times when for the love of money you can't see anything.Askthe chemist for some baby anti-histamine!
