    Question Bleeding Gums

Hi all...does anyone know what the cause or solution is to bleeding gums while pregnant? I brush twice a day & floss but my gums have started bleeding in a few places...

Just keep looking after them really well, don't be put off by the bleeding and be scared to clean thoroughly (but gently ). You might need a few visits to the dentist for proper scaling to make sure it doesn't get out of control. It's perfectly safe to see the dentist for that sort of thing during pg, and it really is a good idea to keep your mouth in good shape.

Don't stress, you're not alone, plenty of us get pg gingivitis!

I had never had bleeding gums till I become preg and I still have them - I have read its due to all the extra blood that you produce while pregnant.

I'm the same, I was told by my midwife that it's due to the increased blood supply as Kafer_girl stated!

I agree with Kafer_Girl and Snoopea. My GP, dentist and midwife all said that it was likely to be the increased blood flow from pregnancy. If you are unsure though, go to the dentist to get it checked out.

I was also unlucky to get the really, really painful teeth. It felt like I had holes in every single one. Went to the dentist and my teeth were in very good shape, just a pregnancy thing. I forget why they said if happened but geez, at times, I am sure it was more painful that some of the labour pains.

It's just a pregnancy thing, for some reason your gums and teeth get bad when your preg, i havent had any problems with my teeth except i need fillings, my doc says just keep up the calcium intake and if i have any problems see the dentist (its perfectly safe as long as you tell them your pregaz and you dont have x-rays or silver fillings)
    Good luck

Yes as everyone says it is common during pregnancy, nothing to worry about, but its a good idea to supplement with Co-Enzyme Q10 if u get bleeding gums. This helps to strengthen gums and teeth, and it has the added bonus that it has loads of other health benefits to u and bubs, in particular heart health and brain development. It not cheap but its well worth it, Ive been taking it daily since finding out I was pregnant.

I had bleeding gums right through my pregnancy - from 3 weeks. It didn't get any worse throughout. I used a sensitive toothpaste and felt that it helped a little. It's just something you have to get used to if you happen to suffer from in during pregnancy. My gums are still bleeding just a little almost 4 weeks after giving birth so it can take a little while to get back to normal after pregnancy too.

It is the increased blood flow, but also the gums being hyper-sensitive to plaque during pg. That's why it's so important to clean well, and not avoid the gums because of the bleeding. And also why it's a good idea to see the dentist, possibly more frequently than normal, to keep it under control.

It can take some time, but yous gums should go back to normal a bit after the birth. If they are still bleeding alot, this is not healthy, and you'll need to see your dentist for scaling. With good oral hygiene, all should be good after that

Thanks girls! I do remember having some bleeding gums with DS but I don't remember it being this bad...it happens every night now (in one spot but sometimes more). Anyway, glad that it's so common... They did come good after DS was born so I'm sure it will happen again.
