Lol, Oskar is still in our room too!! To be honest, I actually really like it that way and even joked (well half joked) to DH that we will need to move the chests or draws out of our room into Oskar's room (which will be a baby/toddler change type room...hehe) so that we can put Oskar's cot at the end of the bed and the baby in the hammock next to me... no probs I reckon!! I like Oskar being nearby especially if he has a night fright or is teething etc cos I can settle him quickly and sometimes it's just because he's sat up and can't see and needs a little light to lay down again and off to sleep... if you're happy with it and have the room then I wouldn't worry.
Oh cass, i wish i was as brave as you!! I really like having Mason in my room and as you said, it is SOOOO Much easier to settle him as some nights he does wake often just to make sure we are still there
I wonder if anyone else has had a toddler and baby in the master bedroom? Would the newborn wake the toddler?
I'll be watching this thread too as we're finally about to fix our second bedroom so that DD can move into it.
BUT it might not be as tricky as I thought because we went away for four nights last week and DD slept in a separate room. Her day sleep was a bit dodgy but at night she was absolutely fine.
We also have a single bed in what will be her room so I'm figuring that if she takes some time to adjust, I'll pop into that bed for however long. I think actually that it will be me who has problems adjusting, not DD and I can see me still sleeping in her room when she's seven!
If you want to move him, it will be easier the earlier you do it in terms of him not resenting the bub for taking "his place" in your room. Does that make sense?
Id do a themed room too, with something he lies and make it really special cos he is a big boy and going to be a big brother etc. He needs to feel safe in there.
If you are in a situation where there is more than one bedroom to choose from, letting him choose (assumng he copes OK with choices) between 2 may also help.
Our DD recently went into her own room after co-sleeping with us from birth. She was 9.5months when we decided to see how she goes in her own room. Our DD never went into a cot so we purchased a toddler bed. It is quite low to the ground. We moved a single mattress into her room with regards to the transition, I planned on a few weeks sleeping in there with her. Was open to bringing her into the single bed but wanted to ensure she stayed in her room, her own surroundings so she could get used to it.
Our DD went great in the toddler bed, we are still quite surprised how well she took to it, it is nice and padded so she is rather comfy, some of those mattresses can be hard!
She is now 11 months old and has been in it for 6 weeks. She is having all sleeps in it at night and day sleeps are fine too. She self settles also, knows her surroundings, I don't like CC.
We figured she wanted her own room to move anyway. Sleeping with us, although we loved it, was becoming a bit squished. She always went into our bed earlier anyway, we would join her later (we could see her from lounge room by the way) and she seemed to be restless all night with us, tossing and turning.
If you want anymore information, you are welcome to PM me.
we just moved our toddler into his own room, we started off with the 4 of us in the master room, me, dp, ds and dd, but the baby would wake the toddler or vice versa, so we put xavi in a toddler bed in our room for 2 months to get used to the new bed, and then moved him into his own room in his own bed. does that make sense? anyway, we had probably 3 crappy nights, but now he's really good. i agree though that you should either move your toddler at least 3 months before or 3 months after the new babe comes along, so that they don't resent the new one.
lol Danni, I'm not brave at all... I don't want to let go I think...lol. I LOVE so much having him so close to me. He's not been babysat by anyone yet, not even during the day. I've only been away from him when DH has taken him to the shops if I've been sick or if he's gone to Bunnings with dad boys stuff apparently...lol. Other than that them old apron strings are FIRMLY attached!!
I didn't even think of the baby waking him or vice versa... I don't know if I am ready to start the move out
I will have to keep in mind what rayray and boobaloo mentioned though, very good point.
I have half of the problem, where in our new house the other bedrooms are at the back of the house and we're right at the front. They dont face the street though but if you get curtains and/or awnings would that be less of a worry? Or are you worried about the noise factor?
I am seriously considering getting not just a baby monitor for the new bub but getting a very basic one for DS as well becuase he is so far away (his room is the furthest from us)
we have just had our first full night of DS sleeping in his own room in his "big bed". He used to sleep well in his cot then winter was a shocker for us with colic and bronchiolitis so he ended up sleeping with us most nights. We have had some time away so we weren't pushing things to change until our life settled back to normal.
The last 2 weeks we started him back into his own room and in his toddler bed we bought really cheap from Ikea. Firstly we packed up the cot and then we re-arranged his room a bit to make it more fun for him to stay in there. At first we slept on the floor with him, then after a few nights we started just sitting with him until he went to sleep and if he got up in the night we went back in and had cuddles until he went to sleep again.
Last week when he was been waking at night he wasn't upset just wandering the house to come and say hello so we started a reward system. He loves Thomas, so for every night he sleeps in his own bed all night he gets a special "sticker" - an activity magnet for the fridge. The first few nights he woke a couple of times but when we tucked him back in he settled really well - and he got his magnet. After 3 nights of staying in and getting a sticker we bought a new Thomas quilt for his bed and since then going to bed has been so much easier.
The storms at night frighten him so he sleeps with us those nights but we have been using this system for about a week and a half now and last night he slept all night without waking at all! He comes in at about 530 and has a cuddle in bed with us before we all start the day and he kisses the belly good morning! Once we are having a good sleep routine the reward system will phase out as it becomes habit and we'll tackle the next hurdle before the baby comes - toilet training.
Yes the toddler bed has been mighty popular with our DD, I can't believe how well it has gone for us as she was a co-sleeper from birth to 9.5months old!
