I dunno if its alot or not to be honest.
My Bub is 20 weeks and sleeps about 18 hours in a 24 hour period. I'm worried this is too much sleep and something is wrong?
Does anyone elses bubs sleep this much?

Well today for example she was up at 6am and then is awake for about an hour then up again at 10 and usually up for 2 hours then asleep for 2 hours til 2pm. She then wnet back to sleep at 3 then awake at 5 and is now back asleep (just about its 6.30pm) We will then feed her at 10pm sometimes she stays asleep for the feed sometime she wakes up but will be back asleep within half an hour to an hour.
In her awake time she is active, playful and happy.
Mine would do that as well, I dont know if it's too much a 4 months, I never thought it was, sleep is very important at that age.
Is Emily sleeping 12hrs overnight?
**ETA*** that sounds normal to me & much the same as my 5 had done.
just thought i would let you know my 6month old sleeps that much i am not concernd.
Today, feed at 5 back to sleep by 530. awake at 745feed, play feed and in bed by 930. awake at 1030play feed play feed sleep at 130 woke at 530 back in bedat 7 and will wake her for a feed at around 10 as she wnet down at 7. so very similar. So I would not worry. If bub needs to sleep she needs to sleep.
Sounds like it's normal for her![]()
Thanks for the reasurance ladies,I had just read something that said they should be asleep for no more than 14 hours at her age and I panicked a bit. I should stop reading!
Storm- If we didn't wake Emily to feed her at 10 she would sleep 12 hours overnight but I think she still needs that feed.
eej, Bella would nearly be the same... Though her sleeps aren't quite as long. She can't seem to stay up very long in between naps - probably no more than an hour. She sleeps through the night, when I say that she has a 3am feed but is still asleep cause she doesn't fully rouse from her sleep so I just give her a bottle and tuck her back in.
Will have to keep a record tomorrow of how many hours she really sleeps.
My little Breah 8.5months would be about the same. Wakes at about 7am back in bed by 8:30 back up at 10:30 or 11am back down at 12:30 1pm then up about 2:30 3:00 back down at 4:00 4:30 then up at 5:30 and back down by 7:30 till morning. Sometime lately she doesnt have the last late in the arvo sleep which means she goes back down abit sooner
Tara seems to sleep less, she chose her own routine, this maybe because my 2 1/2 year old wakes her maybe and they share the same room? her routine which she chose which she has done since 4 months is:
6.30am - wake feed, play
8.30am - 10.30am sleep
10.30am - 12noon wake feed, play
12noon - 3pm, sleep
3pm - wake feed play
4.30pm - sleep
6pm - wake feed play
7pm sleep for the night.
sometimes she wakes up again at 8 or 9pm for another feed. Depends if Julia wakes her up or if she is hungry
So her sleep is more or less 18 1/2 hour or so too )12 hours overnight, sounds normal to me![]()
Both my littlies have slept 12-15 hours through the night, then naps through the day aswell from newborn (DD was 3 days old & DS was about 3 weeks old)
I was a bit worried about DD at first as I was a first time mum & when I told the ECHN at our first mothers group meeting how many hours through the night DD was sleeping she told me I needed to wake DD! I was worried I was doing something wrong until my mum said "never wake a sleeping baby, she'll wake if she's hungry." So I didn't & they have both slept through like that since.
DD is perfectly healthy after sleeping that much since day one & DS is healthy so I wouldn't be worried if I were you
I say enjoy it!!!!
If it makes you feel better darl, my 17-month-old sleeps about 15 hours a day (about 11 at night and four during the day) so by comparison just three hours more for a four-month-old doesn't sound excessive at all.
I have been a bit worried about this myself but she is also looked after by a carer (from the local childcare centre) who tells me that she is the happiest baby she's ever met and that she's very smart. So I reckon she just needs all that sleep because when she's not sleeping her mind's in overdrive.
Thanks so much everyone I feel heaps better!!!! I'll enjoy having a good sleeper then.![]()
Might sound funny to say but a much older friend of mine all her three children slept a minimum of 16hrs per day ... they are all well into adulthood now & turned out to have brilliant professions ... and one is a Doctor ... one is a Lawyer ... and the third one is a Head Nurse in large Hosp ... Maybe a lot of sleep did them well, LOL![]()
Yes, enjoy it! There are all different ranges of 'normal'. Some babies sleep alot. Some babies don't sleep alot. Some can stay awake for 3 horus at a time, some stay awake for 90 minutes at a time. She'll gradually stay awake for longer and longer (until you get to the point where you think WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO SLEEP CHILD!). LOL!
I would think as long as she is alert when she's awake, gaining weight, feeding enough, all those health and wellbeing signs for babies then its just her degree of normal![]()
I had also wondered the same thing even though DS is a smidge younger. My DS is normally up for about 1 hour 15 mins per feed, and only feeds 4 times a day... so he's only up for about 5 hours a day (~19 hours sleep), and similiarly is happy & full of beans when he is awake. So saying, some days he is awake for a bit longer than that. But I didn't ask cos I thought I might sound daft...and for example, the mother's in my mother's group did NOT want to hear me wondering if my child was sleeping too much lol... so it's good to hear all the responses. I guess they each just have their own sleep requirements and we're lucky enough to get the ones that love their snoozy-time!
And lol Smiles4u, love that info!![]()
Well, if a good amout of sleep leads to gainful professional jobs as adults then it looks like both of my children are aiming to be unemployed.
I would give anything to have the stress of lack of sleep removed. For me, it has been the most challenging aspect of parenting so far. eej, enjoy your little one's sleep time hun!
