The best thing we got was a tomy lullaby star which plays music and projects on to the roof as they go to sleep. It goes for 5 or 10 mins then turns off. We still use it with our almost 2 year old and it is essential if he is sleeping somewhere that is unfamiliar. I wouldnt have thought about getting one but am so glad someone else thought to give us one.
The best thing I was given for Jazz... all the little things you don't think of buying yourself until you actually need it... like baby panadol (which we needed after her first needles, so glad someone else bought it for us as it was night and no where to buy it at that time!), matress protectors (don't ask me why but I just didn't think of it!), a neck stabiliser thing for the car seat (VERY handy while they are tiny newborns and their heads just go everywhere!).
For me... I'd have loved something for me. Some breastfeeding tops. I am not really one to spend money on myself so if someone had splashed out for me and got me some Bonds tops or something that would have been nice. Or a gift card for a clothes shop... hate that in between stage where you're not in maternity but not in your old clothes either so have NOTHING to wear... or even just a Sizzler gift card! LOL

In the early weeks the one item I could not have lived without was the vibrating bouncy chair. It gave me a place to put DS when I couldn't hold him nd the rocking/vibrations always put him to sleep. We bought that ourselves though.
My favourite item received as a gift was a bumbo seat. It was awesome once DS got a bit older.
The best thing I got after having DS was a rocker - my mum bought it for us and it was great. We also got given a lot of clothes, nappies and wipes which was fantastic, since he came early and we were not in the least prepared! These days when a friend or family member has a baby I get them useful things - like nappies and wipes. You know these things are definitely going to be used!
I found all the little things great. A friend put together a hamper with nail clippers, a bath thermometer (couldn't live without that one), wash cloths, a night light, etc. I found that to be a great present, so useful!
Things in the next size up. DS grew sooo quickly that I was caught short a few times with what I could fit on him! He grew out of 000's by the time he was about 6wks old and wouldn't fit into his jumpsuits...luckily a friend had gotten a few in 00's.
I love our beautiful HUGE wraps! They grow out of the little ones SO fast and you tend to stock up on those. J man is still wrapped and I have 2 beautiful Plum baby cotton ones that are lovely! Also love the big basket of loads of things from work people, wipes, breast pads, nappies, books, hanging teddies etc. It was great! Also love our floor gym thing. Keeps them amused for ages!
The best thing I got was a basket full of heaps of goodies like wipes, creams, nail clippers, suits and singlets and a big teddy in the middle! I nearly cried when I saw my SIL bring it in as she had been buying things for it since the day I told her I was pregnant and the basket was huge by the time DS was born, it was the most thoughtful thing anyone could of done. Oh and there were a few little treats in there for me like lovely body wash etc!
Why dont you get her a voucher to get castings done of her babies hands and feet when its born?
I never did it and am kicking myself for it. I think something centimental and withmenaing is always a great gift and she can always look back in years to come and remember how small and darling her baby was.
1. The swing that goes automatically if you turn it on. The only way to get a shower without worrying for many, many months!
2. Breastfeeding tops, especially the singlets. My gf that gave me those is forever in my debt! (To reward her I bought her the above swing when she had a baby, and she also agrees with me on its usefulness!).
3. ABA subscription. I gave this to 2 gfs and both appreciated it heaps. Comes with a great book on bfing that I have since leant out to other friends and has been worth its weight in gold. I didn't get around to joining until my bub was a few months old and would have loved it earlier.
When I went on maternity leave the girls from work got me a $100 voucher to the beauticians. I had a mini facial when I was 8 and a half mths pregnant and then just last week I went for a lovely 1hr pedicure. It was heaven!!!
Got lots of the same things for bub as already mentioned but at my local ABA meeting today one of the mums got everyone she knew to pitch in for a cloth nappy service. Every time she got asked "what do you need?" she would say "if you could contribute to the nappy service that would be great so has had someone else washing her nappies for 5mths and it has only just run out. I think this would be a fantastic gift.
This is easy. When DS1 was born my friend gave me a gift subscription to the ABA. This was by far the most useful of all the gifts I have received for either baby. I would definitely buy one for someone else also. Most things you get are useful, but you can always buy them yourselves if need be. It is less likely that a new, sleep deprived mum will think to subscribe at the very time that she needs it the most.
