    Question Measles?

Ok, freaking out, someone calm me down before I rush off to the hospital in a manical state.

My SIL informs us yesterday that her DD, possibley two of her DDs, have the measles. They are at the rashy stage. Apparently its going around the school.

So I wasn't worried, thinking ok haven't seen them in ages, we went round to their house last week but the girls were at school.

Ok so does anyone know the likelyhood of Jazz getting the measles? Apparently the if my neice coughed on something the infectious bit (forgive me, I'm tried lol) stays alive for 2 hours afterwards? What if Jazz came in contact with that? I've been immunised, and I'm breastfeeding does that mean Jazz is covered?

Can someone tell me what measles actually is? Is it like chicken pox? Or worse?

Last week she had a little rash and cough and her eyes were all red and funny and I thought it was hayfever or something, it wouldn't be anything to do with measles would it?

Should I go get a test done just in case? What do they do? Is it a swab or blood test?

    ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH!

Measles is a disease caused by a virus, specifically a paramyxovirus of the genus Morbillivirus. Morbilliviruses, like other paramyxoviruses, are enveloped, single-stranded, negative-sense RNA viruses. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a generalized, maculopapular, erythematous rash.

Measles is spread through respiration (contact with fluids from an infected person's nose and mouth, either directly or through aerosol transmission), and is highly contagious—90% of people without immunity sharing a house with an infected person will catch it. The incubation period usually lasts for 4–12 days (during which there are, by definition, no symptoms). Infected people remain contagious from the appearance of the first symptoms until 3–5 days after the rash appears.

Don't panick. Call your doctor and ask them what to do. I googled and found heaps of very good information on measles. My DD2 was recently sick with what they think was a mild form, although she was quite sick.

What I would look for is initially unusual crankiness, elevated fever (please keep a very close eye if bub starts to get a fever). Red marks in her mouth is a sign too and I think vomiting maybe a sign.
I really don't think you'd have come in close enough contact though but it is good to be informed just in case
