Our poor little Millie has eclampsia. She was fine this afternoon, saw her feeding the pups then DH called me outside saying something's wrong with Millie. She was shaking and panting and couldn't walk properly. I rang the vet and he told me it's preclampsi and not to let her feed the pups for tonight and to give her some puppy food and milk high in calcium. So we have her inside tonight, hope she gets better soon. I forgot to ask the vet how long this is likely to go on for, if anyone knows please let me know.
hhmmm, in all honesty i think it is strange that the vet is taking a sit and wait approach. our cat developed eclampsia and we were told to rush her in asap for a calcium injection. we were advised not to let her feed the kittens for 24 hours as well though.
watch out for possible mastitis too if she isn't currently feeding. the cat got this the following night...
good luck sweet and the moment you see her shaking and going downhill take her to the vet. things can go wrong with eclampsia really quickly.
i'd be ringing another vet - our dog got milk fever (sounds the same) and the vet had to give her calcium injections to try and save her. we lost Jaz when the pups were only 6 days old and had to hand raise the 7 pups for the next 5 weeks.
Jaz was fine at 11pm at night, was shaking by 6am, at vet by 8 getting injections, and we lost her that night around 9pm - so please, don't sit back and wait. if your dog is home, she will want to be with her pups, which means they will want to feed, and further deplete her calcium - you need to get them apart and get treatment for your dog
Thanks for your responses, now I'm worried again. We kept her away from the pups last night and by 10.00p.m she stopped shaking and seemed better. She wouldn't drink the milk so DH put it in a bottle and fed it to her and she drank it all. This morning we put her back with the pups and she is feeding them again but we have started the pups on puppy food and milk so they can slowly wean. We are also keeping Millie on high protein milk and food. The vet rang me back and said that at the first signs of shaking again to bring her straight in, so needless to say we are keeping a very close eye on her.
Thanks again.
