    Two ureters? Share with me...

So I'm in hospital with Matilda who had a nasty UTI (yes this is right 2 weeks after viral meningitis). She's getting better though. She had an ultrasound today which showed her left kidney has two ureters. I have avoided googling after getting freaked out on my first glimpse. BUT now I can't sleep as I have to wait a while to see an urologist.

Anyone out there with experiences with this? Good? Bad? Ugly? (well maybe not ugly at the moment?)

Christy all I can find about it is that it can mean a higher likliehood of UTIs, didnt find anything sinister at all, and it affects about 1% of the population, and she might see a urologist on and off just to cjeck things.
Some info suggested that if required they can do surgery to tie one of them off but that its not always needed.

I haven't had much experience with them myself. I know they are associated with a higher incidence of ureterocele, which is where a small part of the ureter that joins into the bladder bulges out slightly. I'm not sure what the treatment involves.

Hope you get some answers today.

Well its nothing too dire obviously because we are going to be discharged and see a urologist as an outpatient. We are scheduled for a day procedure where she has some dye and then they do a series of radiographs or a scan or something to see what her kidney's do. So we will see what happens. They said its good that she has only had 1 UTI in her life so far... which is always a good thing.

How wrong I was!! We were walking out the door of our room when radiology showed up to take M to the nuclear scan . We went & it was a pretty traumatic few hours for us. M was very brave and I was too! There were times when I wanted to walk outside and scream and cry but I held it together & held her hands. She was so brave, it was a scary machine.

Anyway, the scan showed that her left kidney wasn't functioning as well as her right. So with that knowledge we got sent home with the paediatric urologist saying he would phone me once he read the scan.

He rang this morning saying that the scan did show that her left side wasn't functioning as well as the right, but that it wasn't too bad. There wasn't an obstruction, there wasn't any utererocele's or anything like that...He said to keep her on her antibiotics and see him again in 2 weeks and he will retest her urine and make sure everything is good. He wants to confirm everything with the paediatric urologist at Sydney Children's and we may have to do stuff later, but for the moment there is no need for surgery! Which is a relief.... He also said that her kidney function was good, like %80 so they may decided to go do a laprascope and tie off one of the ureter's but nothing urgent and nothing too soon.
