I am pregnancy for 5w already, went to GP last week, asked for an ultrasound on the 7th week to see if the baby is in the right place at least, but she told me that the earliest will be on 12w, but how I know the baby is ok before that? this is the first time I get pregnant and very worried about the baby. do I need an u/s before that or should I wait for the 12w comes? Thank you all!
Thanks ray for your quick reply, that comforts me a lot, maybe I need a deep breath and some distraction rather than wondering and worrying about what's going on in my tummy.
Its hard until you see the ultrasound and feel the kicks...its the worst bit somehow knowing you are pregnant but having no evidence (apart from feeling vile )
I always get one done at around 8 weeks - but thats only because my sister has a history of losses and I prefer to have that peace of mind. However, I dont get the 12wk one done, just at 8wks and 20wks.
Counting Days - Usually there is definitely a HB that you can see without having to go internal at 7 weeks. It is very possible that it would be visible from 6 weeks, but to be on the safe side and so that you don't have to stress, it is best to wait for 7 weeks.
If you are worried about the position of the sac, you could see that in the right place on an ultrasound as early as 5 and a half weeks, but you may not be able to see a HB at this stage without going internally (and sometimes even internally you won't see it for a while).
Redhat - If you aren't happy with what your GP said, then go and see another GP until you find one that will give you an early ultrasound. If you are concerned about ectopic pg then explain that your GP as well because often they will refer you for an early ultrasound to set your mind at ease. If all else fails just say that you aren't sure of when your LMP was and you would like a dating ultrasound.

I had to have an internal at 8w because of the position of my uterus. Apparently it points towards my back which is only a problem when trying to do an early ultrasound
The only reason I had an early ultrasound was because of irregular periods and not having a reliable lmp to date from So we had to have a dating ultrasound.
Not having any scans at all unless complications somehow present themselves later on down the track
It has become so normal to have them that people think it strange if you don't have one at all. What bothers me is that there is no conclusive study about the safety of having U/S in pg, as there is a lot of heat being delivered to the forming foetus - at a time you're not allowed to have a spa? I'd rather have a spa!!
Anyway, perfectly normal, and advisable not to have too many unless medically necessary
