but you can tighten up the pores, so that they reduce.
Or maybe it's age?? I used to get heaps of blackheads on my nose & chin... now I barely get any at all.
exfoliate regularly - even if it's just the nose area...
apply a mud mask 1 - 2 times a week - just the nose/problem area.
try to extract the blackheads gently after a warm shower... and really soften the skin using a hot face cloth.
If you're able to do all the above things... you will find that the pores start to tighten up...

blackheads on thighs are usually caused by sweat and a bit of friction too.
Get a body exfoliator (scrub) and one of those body gloves/mitts - and just give them a good scrub each time you have a shower. Theres not a lot you can do about those ones really
I got a sample of a sachet of an exfoliating gel which was just AMAZING...I think it was by Bioessence...it sloughed off everything.
I also swear by Model Secrets Sauna Mask which is very hard to find but only costs about $3.50 a sachet. I have found an alternative at Priceline or Target which is a sauna or heating mask...can't remember what brand and it's about the same price. It heats up on your face on application (only has to be on for 5 mins), I use it before I go to bed and the next morning you really notice the difference in your skin. I find it good also to pop a tiny dab of these on a pimple overnight and it seems to knock them dead!
I swear by the sauna masks....they've been a godsend...hope they work for you if you try them Jo.
Jo - you want to get rid of the blackheads before you start tightening the pores, otherwise the dried sebum can't remove itself.
If you've got a whitehead and blackhead problem, it's usually because your not getting rid of dead skin cells quick enough which are blocking the pore and the oil produced is trapped. So we need to make sure we are cleansing properly with effective products. There is no overnight treatment to getting rid of the dried sebum... But some things to help get rid of them and control the situation is to massage the effective areas when cleansing -which should be done twice a day, ensuring all make up is removed. If you wear make up, make sure you cleanse twice to ensure it is completely removed. Secondly, until you get your skin under control, mask every two days (just on the effected area) - this shouldn't be a drying mask, use a good quality mask (I can recommend a really fantastic chamomile mask), and it's also great to use a scrub -dry- once a week if the products you use don't contain any AHA's (Alpha Hydroxy Acid desolves the glue that holds on the dead skin cells) or simillar, but if they do - dry scrub once every two to three weeks. Moisturising is really important, make sure you are moisturising the area - Because dry sebum can also be developed from lack of moisture, so drink up water and apply a good moisturiser. Lastly, don't use waterproof sunscreen on the face and don't use any astringents. I hope my typing made some sort of sense... A bit tired today!
Thanks Catherine and mrsr...makes a lot of sense..i will try and let you know. I do think its more a case of using drying out products so excess oil is being produced, so might have to revamp everything. I am fastidious about cleaning, moisturising and masking and never wear makeup to bed, but still have this problem. Can you tell me the name of the mask Catherine..it sounds great.
You are right Jo, it definitely can be related to old product... But not all products work for everybody anyway. You should know after 4-6 weeks on starting a new skin care regime whether or not it is working for you. Many women think they are cleansing properly, and when inspected under a lamp have actually missed quite allot... even if the make up looks like it is removed, lots of make up can be left in the pores and usually the nose area is the most common area to find makeup residue left behind. A big part of getting rid of those plugs blocking your pores is to really massage you cleanser in that area, it eases the plugs out of the pores but over time. Don't try extraction at home, it is so easy to damage the skin tissue and when we do extractions in the salon, very little pressure is applied and if it doesn't budge we don't persist like some at home probably would. Pore strips do remove much of the congestion from the pores, but it doesn't resolve the problem which is causing the congestion in the first place, so you will probably just end up with blackheads and whiteheads again. Plus, I hate the thought of people using them... the skin is so delicate and pore strips are very harsh - imagine what condition your skin would be in after using them weekly for a few years? And people wonder why they have aged and have terrible skin.
