I have a large barrel curling iron and it gives me dita von teese curls. BUT it's the way my hair is cut and how it curls naturally. So it does depend on your hair.

Hair is dead straight but takes a curl quite well with product. When it was shorter I was able to scrunch it while it was drying to make it sort of wavy haha (sounds SO 80's!!)

Check out the vidal sassoon sight they have some great ways to show you what you'll need. Also you tube it up. You could probably get away with curls like that with socks
And no that doesn't sound 80's I do it toostill
