Yeah I thought it might've an overseas thing. Sunscreen is not something I am going to stop using but am interested in healthier products. ( chemical free etc). :-)
I completely agree with the opening statement. The cosmetic industry rakes in billions of dollars every year based on nothing other than people wanting to improve their appearance to meet an ideal that is not realistic. If everyone needs to paint and 'improve' themselves to feel socially acceptable then there is something wrong with the aesthetic expectation of our culture.
Personally I have never used a skincare product besides occasional sunscreen to prevent the immediate burn rather than any fear of future wrinkles and the odd bit of pimple cream, since even up here on my high horse the message is still pretty clear that zits should not be tolerated.
I am ageing as per natural course. Yesterday my DD1 smiled and patted my hair and talked about my sparkles, which after some thought I concluded were my grey hairs shining in the light lol. I absolutely refuse to teach my children that people should be judged on aesthetics and to me having to alter my appearance for public consumption is indicating that who I am naturally is not good enough. I won't do it. In my world inside my own head all people are treated equally regardless of appearance. This is what I try to model to my children and what the cosmetic industry is inherently in conflict with.
