    Weaning myself off hairdye

I have always used permanent dye on my hair (for about 15 years) because once it washes out a bit it holds the red in my hair where semi-permanents don't. But I want to get my hair into a healthier state. It tends to knot easily which I have been told is because of the dying.
So I am considering getting my hair back to whatever it's natural colour actually is. But I have no idea how to do it. In fact, I just dyed it again tonight because I hate the colour coming through! I suspect if I managed to get through it I would have a lighter colour than the dirty blonde I see coming through. Anyway I need advice on how to get myself off my dye dependency with the least amount of pain (and money he he). Thanks in advance!

I'd be inclined to go to a hairdresser and get advice on how to do it properly. I know some people just stop colouring their hair and just keep it trimmed until the colour has grown out. If your hair is long, it will take a while to do. As for your hair knotting up, there are plenty of products on the market to maintain that.

Go to the hairdresser and have them check out your roots, and then dye in their closest approximation to your natural colour...that way, when it grows out it won't be so noticeable. A style cut at the same time will get rid of any nasty tangly bits, people will just think the new colour is part of your gorgeous makeover, then you can keep or adapt the style as the dye grows out.

I grit my teeth and let the colour grow out for a few inches, then I get a few foils put in the break things up a little and 'meld' the old and the new. It works beautifully.

Then I go and do something mental with it cos I see all this healthy hair to work with

You could probably just keep dying your hair if you reeeeally wanted, but use more intensive conditioning treatments.

My hair tangles regardless of it being dyed or not. I use detangler sprays and I have a garnier hair treatment once a week. Getting a good haircut and dyeing it too match your roots I'd a good idea.
