Football Top Cake - black icing / fondant.

So DD1 wants an essendon jumper cake, I figure it should be easy enough for the jumper shape but wondering where to look for the black for the fondant?

The other thing is I saw a site you pay $40 they send you a disposable tin, cake mix, cookie cutters, rolling pin, fondant & templates....
They dye the fondant for you.... Thinking this might be the go?

when I've needed black or dark brown in the past I've bought ready made coloured fondant from my local cake supply shop. Otherwise, cake supply shops will have the paste (don't use liquid - the paste gives a much better result) in every colour imaginable so you can make your own black from just a basic white fondant. Make sure you wear gloves though when you're handling it or you'll be scrubbing your hands for days to get rid of the colour.

Not sure what website you're looking at, but I've seen quite a few of the cakes now that are the end result of one called Cake to the Rescue. Looks like a fantastic way to get exactly what you need. Unless you do decorative cakes often you would spend more than that on ingredients/decorations if you bought it all individually, so to my mind they're actually a very reasonable price.

I'm embarking on a Cakes to the Rescue Elmo cake this weekend. Just got the pack and all the fondant is in there, already dyed, I'm sure it'll make the process so much easier!

That's the one I have been looking at CoNNiE_Melb - can you let me know how it turns out.... do you mind me asking how much it was with postage?
How long did it take to arrive, her birthday isn't until October so i have plenty of time to order it but i figure by the time i buy cake ingredients, the stuff to make fondant (which i'm not 100% confident with), a big tin & everything else it's going to cost me about $40 anyway.

It cost me $44 inc postage. It took 4 days to come, they ship from QLD.
They usually supply a vanilla cake, but I asked for Chocolate and they had no problem changing it over - no charge.
They also include a template for any fondant or cake shape you need to cut out, so you really can't go wrong - I think - I hope!
I believe the ingredients have a 5 week shelf life so that's how much in advance you can get it.
You just need to buy milk, eggs and butter.

ZF, the cake shop near me has black Ready to Roll fondant. Can't recall how much I paid exactly but it wasn't $40 per colour, more like $20.

Edit: I'll be there Thursday night, I can check for you.

It should be around $15 for 500g of coloured icing, cakes around town is a good place online. Spotlight have a lot in stock now too.

Personally I wouldn't bother trying to mix my own black or red (red is also pretty tricky) and just buy a pack of each. You can get packs that are like a stick of metwurst or fritz (sorry that is SA talk, insert appropriate processed meat name here) so you wouldn't end up with heaps of waste. I buy them from cake decorating shops, kitchenware shops (Creative Cooks here, not sure if this is just an SA thing) or spotlight.

I wouldn't try to dye things red or black either. Buy it pre colored

The cake was actually very big... We had other desserts, so just cut small pieces and we were eating it for days. We had 35 people at the party.
Their website says how many is cake will feed, but I think it's heaps more.

The only down fall was I found the actual cake a little dry... Thankfully I had cut it in half and put whipped chocolate ganache in it.

The outside was magnificent! Instructions were clear and easy to follow, everything I needed provided and it looked amazing! Everyone was very impressed.

I didn't want to put the candles on the cake, so I just put some frosting on their bases and stuck them to the board.
