Personally I wouldn't bother trying to mix my own black or red (red is also pretty tricky) and just buy a pack of each. You can get packs that are like a stick of metwurst or fritz (sorry that is SA talk, insert appropriate processed meat name here) so you wouldn't end up with heaps of waste. I buy them from cake decorating shops, kitchenware shops (Creative Cooks here, not sure if this is just an SA thing) or spotlight.
