    Googled and found this

Nestlé Australia today announced it is replacing the artificial colours and flavours in its iconic Smarties product with ingredients derived from natural sources such as Turmeric, Carotene and Spirulina.

“The technical people in our factory have been working for over 12 months to come up with a way to remove the artificial colours and flavours while retaining the brightness and the great Smarties taste that everyone loves,” said the General Manager, Confectionery and Snacks for NestlĂ© Australia, Mr Andrew McIver.
I loved smarties as a kid, cos I used to lick the red ones and use as blush/lipstick and the blue or green as eye shadow etc - yes I rubbed them on my face - gross I know

It's a good step forward, but there are still problems with some natural flavours and colours too. Colours are particularly difficult because they don't have to list numbers all the time due to patents, so you have no way of knowing what's safe and what isn't.

Also, I boycott Nestle so I won't be trying them

They are not as brightly coloured as they used to be but it does allow my DD to have them - she reacts badly to artificial stuff.
