So DD is in year 10 now, she does well in school but her dragging her feet with homework and not studying before tests is really dragging down her scores.
I'm happy to help her a little with homework and discuss things with her, and she wants me to help organise a homework schedule for her so she gets into the swing before Yr 11.
She wants to be a Midwife (so far) and knows she will need to knuckle down to get the scores she is capable of.
If I had some sort of routine for my homework I might not have hated it so much....does anyone have any ideas??? Teachers, any recommendations??
This might be a bit too general for what you're thinking of but I'm reading a book by Michael Carr-Gregg at the moment called "Surviving Year 12" and he recommends dividing each day into hourly increments and then allocating something to each hour whether it's travelling to school, recreation, an extra-curricular activity. Then you can see what time you have and what's left over for study.
In the sample he gives, each weekday homework starts at 8pm (I know, that seemed quite late to me too) and goes to 8.50pm then a break. Resume homework at 9.05pm until 9.55pm. Then a break till 10.10pm until sleep at 11pm. No homework on Saturday but 7 x 1 hour blocks with 1 hour breaks inbetween on Sundays.
I think his theory is that if you've got the whole evening ahead of you with homework looming, it's easy to kind of half-study for hours on end, not enjoy it and not feel productive. So better to attack it in manageable chunks, starting later so you can do whatever you want until 8pm (even if that's just MSNing your mates who you just saw at school all day!)
As I said, that's probably a bit more general than what you were looking for, but let me know if you want me to p/copy a couple of chapters for you.
