DD12 got her first period last month, it lasted for 3 days and was very light. She was worried yesterday as it was due and asked me why she didn't get it lol.

Can I hijack this post & ask at what age your girls got their first period?
My DD is 11 (a few months off 12).

It was definitely bittersweet. Such an important milestone, but she is my baby

I suggested we do something special to mark the occasion. She was slightly horrified at the thought

DD & I went out for ice cream to celebrate & I brought her a gorgeous little diary so she can mark when she gets her period & work out the pattern. I was severely let down by my mum when I first got mine so I've tried to make it a happy occasion so there's no awkwardness & she can come ask questions if she needs too.

So was my DD and to be perfectly honest, I would have been if my mum had offered me a 'celebration' too.

My DD got her first period almost a year ago now. Her's was heavy the first time. Very heavy and lasted a good week. Her period now only goes for about 4-5days and is what I'd say is normal (from what I can tell) She also does not get them monthly. More every 7-8weeks. I can tell when she is close to starting again as she gets so moody and her face breaks out when normally her skin is pretty much clear.

To start with she couldn't manage her bleeding. Often having leaks but I think it must be much lighter now and she rarely springs a leak.

I also didn't do anything special just gave her more tlc. I would have loved too but she would have been horrified if I made it an event. I think she preferred her privacy.

We celebrated. And there were gifts. Then when she got her lady pooch a bit after her period we celebrated that too.

She also doesn't cramp nor does her mood change. She's pleasant regardless. Unlike her mother :/

Can I just say if you notice things are a bit weird keep an eye on it. A gyno once said that given what my periods were like as a teen they could have predicted the PCOS. So sometimes it's important to be aware of what their body is doing. Whilst fertility isn't a problem now for them it's always good to keep an eye on things so they know what to expect in the future. And so they can seek help if needed etc.

The lady tummy. That most women get post period. Even slight women have them but all through my teen years I thought it was fat. And I didn't want my daughter going through that. And she has the most amazing body image, self love and all that jazz so I must have done something right

I'm so glad that's what it is and you weren't celebrating what Urban Dictionary said it was.

I have to say, I was a little worried. It sounded too much like a small furry mammal for my liking

I was 12 and mine was super light and went for 2 weeks. Then it was very sporadic until my 20s when it was around 5 days long.

    lol my thoughts too!

I was 12.5 when I got mine and it went for 7 days. Then I didn't get it for 6 months again after!

I plan on celebrating with my girls when they get their periods. I think it's a huge rite of passage, it kind of makes me teary just thinking about it :')

I thought we could celebrate too. But she didn't want to. Turns out it's not about me

That was me when I got my first period. When I think now, about DD starting hers I'm the same as PZ, I get all emotional. It's a huge deal, I'm losing my little girl and she's becoming a young woman. But when I got mine I just wanted it to be another day. I asked Mum to borrow a couple of pads and if she could buy me some that day and then that was it. I didn't want to hear another word about it and I didn't want to talk about it. I think she was a little disappointed but if she'd tried to celebrate it I would have been mortified and probably had the same stance, that it's not about her.

Funny how things change when you're the mother!

Lucky everybody is different, hey? I would have loved my mum to have acknowledged it as a big deal for me.

I would have liked to too but my daughter just wanted a hug and a cry and then to pretend it wasn't happening.
