    Cool Question re: Doulas

    Hey Guys.

I am really keen on having a doula present when im birthing. (if i ever get there!)

just wondering, in doing so, can you change your mind and end up getting some pain relief?

    thanks

A doula is there to support you in whatever you decide you want for the birth - having a doula doesn't mean you *have* to go drug free (or do anything else you don't want to do).
She will support you with your birth preferences, whatever they are.
I think it's a great idea and would love to use one as well

Exactly what Flea said. I think the media often portrays doulas as natural birthing hippies but we're just ordinary women who love working with birthing women. We are trained in normal birth, i.e. non medical birth as you need to go to university for that. Instead we are trained in the art of support, and it wouldn't be good support if it meant only supporting you one way or the other. We support you no matter what course your labour takes and we also investigate your feelings about pain relief in ante-natal visits, along with establishing your 'red light' in regards when you have decided enough is enough and you want pain relief.
