    Canadian Thanksgiving

Please help (especially from those living in Canada) .......

I'm planning a Canadian Thanksgiving this year as my sister has recently moved to Canada and would like to celebrate this with her (although she wont be here).

I think it is held on the second Monday of October (8th). Is this right?

Also, what traditional meal is generally served? I have thought about turkey with stuffing, mashed potato, steamed asparagus (????) followed by pumpkin pie with ginger and honey cream.

I'd also like some ideas on table decorations as I'm not sure what to use. Any other hints or ideas would gladly be welcome too.

    Thank you

Thanks for reminding me!! Yes it is October 8th.

Turkey with stuffing and mashed potato are the traditional as is pumpkin pie. We would usually have brussel sprouts on the table too and I was forced to have at least 3 even though they made me gag

Decorate the table with some dried leaves, a couple of pumpkins, I remember making a paper mache cornucopia (sp) and you can use dried corn on the husks as well. Use colours like browns and oranges, think autumn... HTH! Let me know if you need more help!

One of my FAVOURITE holidays! I love the weather at this time of year (best part of fall - leaves all different colours, cool days, no snow yet, apples ripe, aaahhhhh, so lovely!) Also my baby will be almost here. Hurray!
Yep, turkey with stuffing is the standard, and many people also have ham, if they have a big gathering. Mashed potatoes, and whatever veggies you like. (We often do corn, beans, and a salad). Pumpkin pie is also the usual, (we do it with whipping cream) with apple probably being a close second.
As far as decorations go, our family doesn't really go too crazy there (there's enough work just getting a meal together for 18 people) but you could use coloured leaves, pumpkins and gourds, corn stalks (don't know where you'd find that by you at this time of year) fall chrysanthemums, "Indian corn" (corn with coloured kernels), anything red, orange, yellow, and brown.
Have fun with it! As the PP mentioned - think fall, and harvest! It is a celebration of God's blessing on the land and crops.

Thank you so much SBB and Cricket, you've both been a great help. It looks as though I'm on track as far as the meal is concerned. We are only having 3 people over so cooking wont be too hard, it is more so we can celebrate at the same time as my sister who will be in Toronto by then.

As it is Spring here, everything is greening up so I'm not sure where I'll find orange/fall coloured anything, but I might even just print off some orange maple leaves or something and use my imagination for the rest of the decorations.

    Thank you again so much!

Oooo I wish I could come!!! Hopefully I can get back home in time for the next TG and show Noah what it is all about. I bought him a book that is about TG before he was born, it is so cute. As for the dead leaves, just pull some down from a tree and let them die Have fun!!!

Don't forget the cranberry sauce for the turkey! And brussel sprouts / candied yams. There are some good recipes that use marshmallows or brown sugar and pecans. Have fun I am getting hungry just thinking about it
