    What do you do?

I'm a writer and, currently, a senior curator. I work in the arts.

How long have you been doing it? About 7 years in variations of the field though I've been writing my whole life.

How did you get into it?

Six years at university including an Honours year - first class honours. Lots of work experience, lots of job hunting and crappy jobs in retail/hospitality in between as it's a difficult industry to break into as a graduate.

If you could do any job in the world would you still do it?

I will always write, what is likely to change is the context. Not sure I'll always be in the arts.

What do you do? Statistician currently working in Public Health

How long have you been doing it? Almost 4.5 years.

How did you get into it? Started out studying Physics and Geology at uni and did 6 weeks of data analysis which I loved so switched to a Maths degree majoring in Stats. After completing Honours I was lucky enough to get a job at the same university where I studied.

Do you enjoy it? Right now I'm loving it again after having a tough return from mat leave last year and dealing with PND. I enjoy exploring and analysing data, but don't like others interpreting it to suit their own agendas. Numbers speak for themselves.

If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? I don't know. Sometimes I think I'd be perfectly happy as a SAHM.

    What do you do?

I work in IT Operations specialising in UNIX and Middleware Systems Adminstration. At the moment I make sure the computers that run lots of websites and mobile applications are available sonthat rhe sites and apps stay up and functioning properly and (no hitting please) that banner ads display properly

How long have you been doing it?

I've been in IT for 12 years

How did you get into it?

Dropped the lower of the 2 maths subjects I was doing in Yr 11 and took IT instead. Liked it and found it easy. Got into a selective IT course that paid me a scholarship to go. Found it boring but suffered from parental bullying (don't be a dropout etc) so stuck at it instead of changing to an arts or science course

If you could do any job in the world would you still do it?

no. I'd like to be a forensic scientist.

    What do you do?
Bank Manager. Not in the conventional sense though - I write credit papers for new business customers wnating finance.

How long have you been doing it?
This job, on & off for approx. 5 years with some maternity leave in there. I have been in the banking industry for nearly 16 years.

How did you get into it?
I left yr 12 not getting into Uni/TAFE and was working at a bakery. My Cousin knew someone in HR looking for new people to join the retail side of the Bank. I applied, did an aptitude test & had an interview then was on a 3 month probation period before being offered a permanent part-time position. I have moved through various roles during my time in the Bank.

If you could do any job in the world would you still do it?
No, I never thought I'd get into Banking & Finance. I was not good at maths and lacked alot of confidence. Through hardwork I have been fortunate enough to be promoted throughout my career, however this is not an industry I would promote anyone to work in, particularly if you want/have a family. I have been fortunate to be working under some very supportive bosses and have alot of flexibility in my role as well as being able to wrok part-time at a great wage.

I really don't know what else I would do though b/c I feel somewhat stuck. In yr 12 I looked into being a Chef or a Child Care Worker, did work experience but never pursed it. I have thought about doing courses in beauty to midwifery.....

    What do you do?

Currently a SAHM, Previously a primary school teacher

How long have you been doing it? Been teaching for about 10 years in different countries and settings.

How did you get into it?

Always wanted to work with kids, was a nanny during university. Studies Education right out of school and because I couldn't get a job here (don't get me started on Ed Qld!) I went and worked in Japan. I travelled a lot teaching for 6 years and moved back to Aus 5 years ago.

If you could do any job in the world would you still do it?

I will always work with children although not sure I'll go back to the mainstream classroom. I have seen too many kids fall through the cracks of the education system. In the UK I worked with "high risk" children. That is young, violent offenders and children who had been excluded from 4 or more schools. I loved it! I would love to do some study in the psych field and work more with these misunderstood kids.

What do you do? I work as a waitress in a local restaurant. Working mostly nights so hubby can look after bubba. My title is "Casual Restaurant Supervisor"

How long have you been doing it? I have been working in restaurants since 2003, I have been employes at this place for a year now

How did you get into it? I always wanted to work in the hospitality industry, in particular Food & Bev. I love the industry, I love the role. I can come home and generally not think about anything. Orignally I wanted to travel and DH & I were tossing up between house or working in Europe for a year and my job was perfect for that. However house won

If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? Definatly. I would love to continue moving further up the chain to restaurant manager or Food & Bev manager. Have to wait and see.

    What do you do?
I am a primary school performing arts specialist!

How long have you been doing it? I have been a teacher for around 7 years but have only been doing performing arts for 1 year.

How did you get into it? Uni for my degree, but I kind of fell into teaching music! I have no background in it other than being in choirs, singing and loving music.

If you could do any job in the world would you still do it?

Mmmmm not too sure, as much as I love teaching but I am bit like glenny there are lots of things that I don't agree with in the mainstream system, too many gaps, too much data, too much bureaucracy rather than just teaching. Not sure I will ever end up back in a classroom, I really love being a specialist and having the flexibility of running my own program.

    What do you do?
    Stay at home Mummy!

How long have you been doing it? Well, DD is 7 1/2 months, and as of yesterday we've been home from hospital for exactly 6 months!

How did you get into it? Ummmm.....I'd rather not go into details. But, my latex allergy was one of the main reasons.....

If you could do any job in the world would you still do it?

I'd love to work in a Zoo. Thats been my dream. One day, I may see about moving us to Halls Gap and work in the Zoo there. It will be easy enough for DP to be transfered.

    What do I do?
I run poker tournaments in pubs around W.A. My title is Tournament Director/Host - working at night, usually 5pm till midnight

How long have you been doing it?
With the company I'm with now, only a month but I have done this same job with another company back in 2007.

How did I get into it?
I wanted out of my old job, I called in a favor from the Franchise Owner (who's been a mate of ours for a while) and that's how we got the ball rolling

If you could do any job in the world, would you still do it?
There's 3 I have with the utmost desire. A teacher, a forensic investigator or a stay at home mum who gets paid to be a game tester
If I could be paid to study for the first two, I would. This job is a short term job, after coming back from mat leave, I'll be looking for another job more convenient to two kidlets

What do you do? i'm still a SAHM for most of the time but i've recently gone back to working one day a week in my field, which is marketing.

How long have you been doing it? i've been doing marketing for about 11 years. before that i was doing debt collections & fraud invesitgations for a finance company.

How did you get into it? i moved to the uk in 1999 & was just doing 'whatever' work when i had some contact with the marketing dept of the company i was working for. i decided that i needed a career change. recruiters told me i had no chance without a formal qualification but i ended up landing a temp role while i was studying & they then offered me a full time marketing role.

If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? i'd rather do something that i felt actually helped people or made a difference to their lives. since i had DS, i've often thought i wish i had studied to become a midwife. although i would love to do sport marketing! that would be very cool.

What a great thread! There was one awhile back I've been wanting to dig up where everyone said what their 'job' was, was so interesting!

What do you do? I am a nurse but a SAHM at the moment. The shift work is not really good for my family (as my DH also works shifts but his are about 14 hours) I'm unsure if I will go back to nursing. I keep my registration current though.

How long have you been doing it? About 12 years but haven't worked since I went on maternity leave in May '09

How did you get into it? Went straight in from Year 12, worked while I was studying and ever since! I didn't really know what I wanted to do when I left school so just kinda fell into nursing.

Do you enjoy it? Yes and no. I don't enjoy the politics or the paperwork, mainly the 'you haven't done anything unless it's documented' attitude! But I have always loved working as a team, the friendships you gain from woring so closely with others, I loved dealing with patients/residents. I've worked in many settings and enjoyed working in a medical centre the most.

If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? Nope. My dream job would be to own a cafe/bookshop

What do you do? I'm a new connections consultant for an electricity retailer. I handle setting up accounts for people building new homes and frequently deal with electrical contractors and construction companies - working on anything from single residences to large scale high rise apartment buildings.

How long have you been doing it? About 3 years now, moving up from the general contact centre

How did you get into it? Started work in contact centres for telstra sales (please don't shoot me) then moved into the general call centre for my current employer, was then promoted into new connections.

Do you enjoy it? Most of the time - I love dealing with excited new homeowners, talking them through the connection process and liaising with builders etc to get the best outcome. It can be stressful sometimes when things aren't going according to plan because of hold-ups outside our control.

If you could do any job in the world would you still do it? Nope. 8 more weeks and I'm on maternity leave, am currently looking into a major career change and going back to study environmental biology in the near future.
