I've expressed milk in the past and have had no problems with supply drying up - my first 3 breastfed over 12 months (my third to about 16-17 months!) so lets hope this little one goes the distance! Breast milk is a "supply and demand" kind of thing - the higher the demand, the greater the supply (or so a community childhood nurse once told me!) Personally, I haven't found anything to the contrary, so I'm guessing that it's right!!
Mel - lol @ your tantrum town!! If I sent my 7yo your way, I reckon he'd think he was on holidays!! The weather would be too nice for him to think about doing chores! (I think the cold weather keeps him motivated and thus warm!!)
hi everyone, my first time typing while feeding so apologies for no capitals and any mistakes lol.
well jazz was born on the 5th. c/s as well, though the recovery is going good, not too painful now just sore/tender, the bruise around the c/s hurts more than the c/s wound now. exclusively bfing which is going great, though shes only feeding one side at a time so i get lopsided between feeds. we got our first mega spew today and woah i tell ya i was surprised at how much and how far one tiny baby can spew. ditto for poos lol she'd be winning gold if they had an olympic event for that.
her sleeping is great, though shes a bit confused and sleeps all day and wants to party all night. we are cosleeping so its not too bad, dont have to get out of bed everytime she wakes.
had a touch of jaundice in the hospital, but she is going pink again now. born at 3790g, at day 3 she had lost about 300g, and she has gained back half of that at day 6 so yay very happy for my chubba bubba lol
hey vic i hear you on the taking blood, a paed doing jazz's discharge did a jaundice blood test, used her heel and it took about 5 minutes to get the blood out she was squeezing her foot and jazz was screaming. i had tears, the dr made me hold her legs down cos she was squirming, and shel looked like she was about to deck the dr hahahaha she doesnt remember now of course - jazz that is - but still!
kiwigirl - i hear you on the crying, i've been pretty good and thought i was going to bypass the 3 day blues but i crashed on my first night home bawling poor shel lol it only happens during dinner time, right when shes cooking,
Whoops cut of midsentence. Shel needed help with dinner lol. Well Jazz is down, bugger, hoped she might stay awake and sleep tonight, but i doubt it!
Bugger thought i might have been able to write some more, no such luck now the princess is squarking, needs me (and obviously not shel ) for some reason... shes clean, fed and burped! Just being a little velcro baby probably Back later

So Nakita is "Due" tomorrow I can't believe it!! It is very weird Kiwigirl, she has really started to fill out now and has cute cheeks, her bum is even starting to fill out - it was just a mass of creased skin!!
Welcome Katti How big was Shane when he was born? I will have to try the 0000 wondersuits they might fit her, but yeah will be in the 00000 for a while yet, some are still too big!
I hear you with the happy baby = happy mummy!!
I have been expressing the whole time, my electric pump is my second best friend!! I would be lost without it. I usually just pump what is "left" if I and feeling engorged or sore
Mel, I have no idea on how Nakita is going to go with the Pea Pods we have when she actually gets up to weight, we have some others that might be better... will just have to wait and see!
Messy house here too, but we are home tomorrow and if Nakita actually sleeps and doesn't want to be a velcro baby the I might get it cleaned!!
Mountain Mummy I have to say I don't envy your hectic household, I am just keeping up - sort of with Nakita!! I couldn't imagine adding more to that at the moment!!
Sounds like you are recovering really well Leasha! I hope Jazz starts to party during the day time really soon! The BT's suck, I would have been much if she did just the heel *****! She had a lot of BT's in hospital, and we found the best there was a BF then the pathologist would do the heel ***** as she fed - she didn't even notice when we did that, the other times it was terrible, but not as bad as last week!
Eli has done fantastic on a nice small weight loss Kiwigirl, you must have great boobie milk!!
I have lasagne in the freezer but DH can't eat it cos it has tomato in it, I would so just love to heat it up for dinner!!!
You have to have a cry.... Day 9 for me was the day I crashed - big time!! My midwife walked in as I was pumping - which was what I spent most of my time doing - and looked at me and said I needed to cry, and I fell to pieces, she said to me as she was leaving have a good cry in the shower. I was washing all my pump stuff and bawling my eyes out and my OB came in, so she copped it too, but a lot of it was me stressing about having enough milk as I was struggling to keep up with what Nakita needed, so she organised Motilium for me which she had mentioned earlier but I must not have heard her properly!! The after she left Nakita's paediatrician came in and said we could go home.... NO!!!!! I cracked it again!!
But it was the best for me, my MW came back that night to check on me, she and my OB were worried and had caught up during the day, but I was much better that night! The first time I left the hospital and went home for 1/2 hour without Nakita was terrible I just wandered our house aimlessly collecting random items with tears pouring down my face - poor DH didn't know what to do as I didn't want help!
We get there in the end and it is worth it all!
So I started typing this post early evening Wednesday, now finishing it early morning Thursday, had 3 hours sleep so far, will see what I get after this feed!! Last night was a shocker, I don't think I really slept after her early morning feed, and Nakita wouldn't go down, became over tired would eat properly, at lunch I topped her up with EBM to fill her belly, then she actually went back to her normal feeding pattern, I think she was too exhausted to feed properly earlier. so that when I put her down she will sleep!
I am expressing what is left in my big boob as it is sore and it seems to have a better supply than the right and has been getting sore and lumpy - I think I have a blocked milk duct and if I leave it to the next feed it is gonna hurt like crazy!!
Now that I have finished this post Nakita's Due date is today, so her corrected age will be one day!!
Happy due date Nakita!!! Vic, you are doing so well with the expressing. I did think about expressing but with a toddler running around, thought it may have been biting off more than I could chew!!!! You'll have to post a pic of her in her first cloth!!! I don't have any pea pods, am getting success with fitted and covers at the moment for her, which I am most pleased about.
No tears here, but lots of yelling at my DH because we are both so tired!!! Luckily we have the kind of relationship where we can tell each other to "get f'd" and ten minutes later everything is all good again.
Leasha - hello!! Jazz is gorgeous. I suspected that we would be in the same buddies thread!!! Gotta love those velcro babies!!!!!
MM - Its cold here in the early hours.. I don't mind chores being completed at 3am...hehe
Well little miss still doesn't want to sleep after her 2.30am feed.... DH took her into the hallway last night away from the little light in the bedroom and she fell asleep pretty quickly, so thinking about taking my bubba moe into the bedroom, whack her in that and maybe she will take a little less than 1.5 hours to get back to sleep. DS has been waking at 6am too, so we are getting a little tired!!!!
Going to show her off at work today, so that should be fun. Also going shopping for a new lounge cos ours is really bad and not helping my pelvis!!!!
Which reminds me, better have breakfast and my daily dose of codeine!!!
Morning! Yay for Nakita's EDD finally arriving I can't imagine how much more emotional I'd have been in your shoes Vic, especially leaving her would have been heart breaking.
Had a great night last night so hopefully I won't get too grumpy with DH today like the last 2 days (glad I'm not the only one Mel!!!)
Eli seems to want to feed for 2 hours from 10pm - 12pm which is a bit exhausting, I think my midwife said they like to stock up then for later when they will sleep through the night. I fed him 3 times in the night but since we are co-sleeping, I barely woke up for two of the feeds, yay!
Leasha, how's your co-sleeping going? What positions do you lie in? I have been having him lying on top of me, stomach to stomach with his head on the side when I go to sleep but in the night have him lying in the middle of the bed facing me.
MM - I hear you on the dishes piling up!! I'm going to try and get a few things done today but two days ago I made the bed and picked up something and pulled something in my back like a pinched nerve feeling. OUch!
Hi Katti, nice to meet you! So glad Shane is doing well.
Okie dokie, Rachel it is!! (sometimes, some people prefer the anonymity of their screen names!!)
We are also co-sleeping ... well, Veygas gets put into his cot after his bath and 5pm feed so that I can deal with the other 3 munchkins, but when he wakes up around 9-10pm, I keep him in bed with me cause it is easier to get motivated to feed him again when he wakes up and 1am and 4am plus it is waaaaaaaaaay too cold to get up and walk around the house at those hours (especially the last few nights when it has snowed!)
He's a funny little monkey, he likes to sleep curled up in my arm with his head on my shoulder (this goes for during the day as well, so it's not just when I am lying down!!) But the important thing is that we are getting sleep!
Mel - DP and I also have that kind of relationship - we can have the most massive arguments, but as soon as it is all out, we are best friends again!
Leasha - so happy things are going good for you guys! Veygas prefers to have me than DP, and it's so funny, cause our 3rd, Khaemon was the complete opposite ... if DP could have bf-ed him, he would have been in heaven!! And he is STILL a daddy's boy! But Veygas is definitely a mummy's boy!
Vic - LOL! You kind of get used to a hectic life ... I mean, what is my alternative?? But at the same time, I think you tend to get more lenient with sunsequent children ... you let them cry just that little bit longer (but they also tend to get away with a bit more too!) My days definitely need alot more planning atm!! And it's good to get out of the house (even though most days I now have 3 kids in tow!!)
Wow and Happy Due Date to Nakita!
Got started on some housework this morning - have done 4 loads of washing (Veygas goes through blankets like you wouldn't believe, chucky little thing he is!!), folded up nearly one basket of clothes (only 3 more to go, plus todays lot!), and am seriously considering doing some more dishes!! Plus all of the sheets need changing, and I would love to do that before the weekend, so maybe (just maybe :cross fingers: ) we might get to go out somewhere as a family - we haven't done anything since Veygas was born!
And since we are all pretty much going on a first name basis, you can call me Cindy!
Another midwife visit today, Jazz was weighed again and she's up to 3750... 40g to go to get back to birth weight, what a little piggy!!!!! Good though, its better to have them a bit over than under, and they lose a little when they go through their growth spurts anyway right? Ah well, I'm not going to put her on a diet yet anyway lol.
She's in cloth now too, as of this morning. Oh its so gorgeous with her big cloth bum!!! We're just using some of those terry prefolded things, like the ones you get in big w and target, except i bought them off ebay and they're a whole lot thicker.
Still partying at night... i think we worked out what is wrong... she can't sleep in silence! She slept the best last night when I had the tv on in the bedroom, go figure! So we're going to set up a little radio and see if that helps tonight.
Rachel, we have a little sleeper thiing, called 'close and secure sleeper' which we use most of the time except when I get the *****s with having no room - we put it in the middle and it takes up half the bed and shel and i squish around it LOL! Jazz loves being on my tummy, though its been a bit tricky with the c/s, she likes to squirm and i'm yet to find a way to have her on my tummy where she doesn't kick it. Sometimes I just put her in t he middle, but i get scared of pillows and our doona being on her. I'm a very nervous mum! (we had to travel about 1.5hrs downand back to south brisbane on tuesday and all the way down and back i kept poking her to make sure she was ok. she slept the whole time and i kept freaking out that the car seat straps were choking her or something ). Do you and your DP have separate blankets/doonas? I've read you're supposed to though we don't yet with the sleeper it keeps it off her.
Mel, I hear you on the lounge situation, we are going shopping monday. i need 3 pillows just to sit on our lounge, plus one underneath as the slant a bit. The first few days at home were murder getting in and out, i almost slept in it as i almost needed a hoist to get me out!!
How is everyone feeding? I'm a bit confused, one midwife says just feed when she wants a feed - when she does the head bob and sucks everything in sight lol - and another midwife says wake her every 3 hours during the day to feed and leave her at night. I've just been doing a bit of both, letting her lead but waking her if she sleeps through for 4 hours (lol, only during the day though!! If shes asleep at night she stays asleep!).
Well, gonna go browse some posts, and then go wake our girl up. Midwife said to wake her up during the day and maybe she'll sleep at night. I doubt thats going to work, I'll probably end up with an overtired screaming baby by afternoon, but we'll give it a go to say that we did.
Welcome leesha and jazz!!! I read you had a pretty horridous labour- i hope you are recovering well after your c section!! Well done on little Jazz putting on the beef!!!!
As for feeding- i was told a similar thing- as Shane had slightly high levels for jaundice- the mw said the solution is to feed feed feed- he averages 2.5-3.5 hours sleep during the day and up to 5 hours at night and early morning- he is pretty good though too- he will wake slightly and settle himself - i try to wait for him to REALLY wake by himself (but not quite get to the screaming i WANT food now stage!!) so he is alert when i go to feed- or other wise he will drop right back off after only 5 or so mintues on the boob. A good tip i had too was to strip him down to his singlet and nappy (keeping his bankie near by of course) as that helps keep him awake during feeds. I find that Shane will still do the head throw back thing like he really wants a feed (after i have already been feeding) but he just wants to see the boobie- and then he goes back to sleep!! LoL
Another good tip for your lopsie boobies is to feed one side.. change bum and redress and wrap then go for the other boobie. Shane then likes to pretend to be asleep for 5 mintues before wanting another quick suck- so i then rotate which boobie we settle him on. Usually which ever one he has feed on the least. I try to average between 15-20 mintues on each boobie. We have had some wind dilemas too- i got some stuff (bottle is too far away to look at what its called) to help- a few little drops in his mouth has really helped him with the burping.
LoL Listen to me!!! I sound like i know it all!! Sorry!! Everything is just so fresh in my mind its all spilling out at once!! Thats about all i know!!
Beema.. Happy due date Nakita!! Shanes EDD is still a few days away (19th of August) It was funny too- we were booked in for the c section on Tuesday the 5th- he arrived n his own on the 3rd- and we were home the day after he was "meant to be born" it was strange!! Shane was a 2830 when he was born- he lost about 600grams the first day- then piled 500grams back on the next day. I have my first early childhood appt on Tuesday- so we will weigh him again then. He is certainly eating well so i am expecting a big jump!!
How long did Nakita need to spend in hospital?? I would have been the same- bawling my little eyes out going home without my baby!! that must have been so hard on you!!
MM... You go girl with all that washing!!! As i said Shane only fits so many of his many clothes right now- i have to wash everything right away or else he has to wear clothes that swim on him!! Not a good look!! Oh and i should be honest- when i say I have to wash- translate that to I tell DH to wash!! LoL!! We have been co-sleeping after the 2am feed- Shane tends to be slightly unsettled and its much easier having him right there then me having to get up and down every 5 or 10 minutes.. i like the little saying "velcro baby"- thats my boy all over!! We have the bassinette right near the bed- but he is still too far away for his liking- especially in the cold wee hours of the morning!!
Rachel.. When we co sleep i usually have him next to me- i did start with him in the crook of my arm- but found that was tending to make my neck and shoulder sore from staying in the same possie, i tend to have him slightly on the pillow next to me with me sleeping on my side face to face with him. He is usually in the middle between me and DH coz i am afraid of him falling off the bed!! But i wake DH and let him know he is there- coz i get afraid DH will roll over and try to cuddle me and squish shane in the process!!!
Mel.. We have the same thing happen after the 2am feed- and then the 7am is all good- and then issues again at the 10am feed (took about 2 hours this morning!!) He just keeps getting half asleep (or at least i think he is sleeping) then as soon as i go to put him down 5 mintues later he wakes up like "hey im not with mummy anymore.. not happy jan!!" and cries till i pick him up - then he is fine again- until i try and put him down!! DH is slowly learning that he just needs to be settled- not neccessarily fed so he is starting to help abit more there with rocking and soothing.
Well i did something very silly last night- we have a horrid stair case - the bedroom is upstairs- and while i was pregnant we moved our bed downstairs to the lounge room and have stayed down here as its easier access to everything.. but our clean clothes are now living in the upstairs room on the spare bed- i went there to get some clothes last night and on the way down the stairs i slipped and fell!!!! I have hurt my bum in a BIG way!!!!!!! DH thinks its just a bruised coxix (spelling???) i am having a horrendous time sitting in bed- and its a huge ordeal to get out and stand up- its far more painfull then the c section and has restricted my movements far more!! I feel soooo useless- i have to wake DH up to get Shane out of his bassinette- and i cant even lean over to pick him up if he is on the bed- and it hurts to even change him. I am heading to the dr this afternoon to get checked out- i am hoping its not too serious!!!
Little man is awake now so i best haul my sore arse up!!!
Hey Leasha - I've always fed on demand (although I tend to think that boys are better at this than girls!!) Up until my DD was about 4 or 5 months old, I was having to wake her to feed, cause she had a tendency to sleep for 6-8 hours at a time if I didn't!! But in my experience, they know when they are hungry!!
