Noni - how are you going with breastfeeding? As the others have said you need to do what is right for you both. Are you able to see a LC at the hospital or can your ECHN put you in contact with one who won't need upfront payment?
Saffi - yay for remembering those tired signs. I can only imagine that somethings get forgotten along the way as you learnt new things with DS... it is easy to forget the things from newborn stage.
Megsmum - thank you. The hardest part was when I was still in hospital (ironically) because I wouldn't want to be in my room... but I couldn't sit up at the SCN 24 hours a day... though I wanted to LOL. The nurses were good at making me look after myself as well which I am thankful for. But when I was back in my room it was hard to hear the other babies with their mums. GL with Emma's clicky hip. When Caitlin had her ECHN checkup the nurse said she didn't think the hip was clicky but to get the US anyway. Time will tell I suppose.
Cass - Caitlin is the same with feeding when I am trying to eat. DP was good the other night and settled her whilst I quickly ate dinner (cold LOL)
Cheezel - all going well. I think Caitlin may have a cold at the moment... not 100% sure but I am making sure to keep the fluids up to her... she isn't always hungry but I pop her on the boob as soon as she looks at me LOL. Hope he is better now.
RhiaMaree - has the formula change been better for Daniel?
Koru - I will be doing a similar thing to you... DD arrived very early so I am in a different group to my belly buddies. I will be posting in this group and the group my buddies are in... hope no one minds!
AFM - Caitlin is a good baby - she sleeps lots and is fairly easy to settle. I keep waiting for the 'change' but it hasn't happened just yet. Breastfeeding is going well... she has tried to suck on DP when she is hungry and he is having cuddles LOL it is too cute. DD is asleep now and I have been getting stuff done around the house. Caitlin put on weight at the ECHN check up last Thursday... she is 5grams above birthweight  so she weighed 2410 and had but on 50 grams since being discharged from hospital on the Monday. The nurse wants to weigh her weekly for the moment so we are going to clinic again this Thursday... ok best be off to get the washing out before DD wakes for her next feed
-
hey,
well bfeeding didnt end up happening.. we sought lots of advice from aba and an lc and my gp but were sticking with formula.. the gp was concerned about us ever considering reducing his formula for bfeeding because hes still not back in the 50th percentile which is what he was born into.. hes doing well on the formula tho he put on 600g in a week and a half so im very happy.. he also recently developed thrush in his mouth so since treating that hes a much easier baby.. i can even put him down sometimes haha what a novelty!!
hope everyones doing well :)

Hello everyone,
I have been MIA because we have been so busy anround here lately, and then DH got really sick over the weekend. He goes back to work on wednesday, hopefully the kids decide to behave for me. It has been good having him home to help out.
Baz's circumcision went well and without incident. he weighed in at 3.67kg on wednesday. He is a happy little baby, smiling all the time. He has even laughed twice now - although he startled himself both times when he did, like he was wasn't expecting the sound and didn't know what it was.
I think I may have a prolapse. I am not sure if I should try and see a dr about it ASAP, or if it can wait until my six week check up though. I would prefer to wait, seeing as I am already booked in to be checked out then anyway.
Koru - of course you can join us here! :) How is everything going?
Noni - Hope everything is going well and that you are happy regardless whether you are b/f or bottle feeding.
Cheezel monster - hope bubs is feeling better. Don't feel bad - you really cann't control when kids get sick. My DD caught her first cold (from me) when she was three or four weeks old. It wasn't fun.
Hello everyone else - sorry gotta stop typing and feed bubs on the other side now (and I cann't type left handed).
-
Hiya,
I'm going to start a general thread on this - I'm sure it's been asked a million times already too - but thought I'd check in with you 'experienced' gals in here first:
How do you settle an 'over-tired' baby? It's all very well saying 'oh she's over tired' but how the heck do you settle her when all the normal things (bath, walking in arms or in a sling, rocking chair, offering a breast....) don't seem to do anything? Well fed, clean nappy and burped so I can eliminate those causes too.
Orla sleeps all arvo then is alert and lively in the evening meaning she doesn't settle at night and ends up fussing and crying for hours :(
Other than that she's thriving - will be weighed again today but she certainly looks fatter and bigger, feeds well (and often!) and is generally a delight (except at night!)
-
Koru - That could be her arsnic hour??? Which is developmental stage that babies go to at around 4-6wks... This is where nothing will settle them they just need to let out a cry and after an hour or to back to their happy selves...The only other thing i could suggest would be trying all the things you already are... So that doesn't help. sorry.
Misty - My DF goes back to work today, I'm hoping my kids behave too lol... Glad to hear Baz circumsition went great. I would go see doc now hun...
Noni - your doing what is best for you an bubs which is the main thing :) U did a great job trying hun...
TK - hope caitlin didn't end up having a cold...
Cheezel its not your fault peter caught a cold hun... I hope hes got heaps better.
AFM - Eloise put on weight again yesterday - 290g, she know weighs 4120g! She was also diagnosed with silent reflux and she is now on Zoton granules to help. she is my little screamer, ill scream for hours because of the reflux, she on't lay flat. the only ay i can get her to sleep is in mine or Df arms and she co sleeps ith us at night. i can hardly put her don so now DF has gone bk to work this is going to be a challange holding her 24/7 and dealing with my other three kids getting them off to school etc... I can see we're going to have some late days...
On that note, I really shold go get ready... the screaming has started...
-
Cass blob - sorry to hear about the reflux. My DD had that as a bub and it made her (and subsequently everyone else) miserable. I am alittle concerned that Baz may have reflux, he is very perky and not happy about it, but so far not nearly as unsettled as DD was.
Koru - I could tell you all the tips for settling an unsettled bub, but the truth is I am not sure how helpfull they will be. sometimes a baby just will not settle no matter what.
-
Hi everyone
Been lurking and meaning to post but by the time I get to it baby cries etc. You know how it is... Anyway
Sorry to hear that there are bubs with colds. I don't think it will be long before Immi gets one as DS is in daycare and constantly has a runny nose.
Cass - sorry to hear that bubs has reflux. Great weight gain tho, you must have been feeding her heaps despite the reflux.
Noni - great that you have made the decision to FF full time. I think I'm getting to that point myself.
Misty - my DH goes back to work on Monday. I'm lucky that DS is in daycare 4 days a week so it will be just me and the baby at home. I take my hat off to anyone with a baby and kids/toddlers at home. I'd go to the Dr sooner rather than later.
Hi to everyone else.
Got the MCHN coming to the house tomorrow for Immi's 4 week checkup. She put on nearly 300gr last week so I am hopeful that hweight gain this week will be just as good.
Can't believe my little girl is a month old already!
-
Thanks everyone for your suggestions re settling. I have come to the conclusion that Orla is just a normal baby and it's one of those things we have to live through  Will try out some of the tips and see how we go....
Cass and Misty - sorry to hear about the reflux - that must be 10 times worse than a generally unsettled baby!
-
Hi Everyone,
Have been too busy or shall i say too tired to get around to posting.
DS2 is 4 weeks old today and is piling on the weight, has put on 1 kg, and has grown 4.5cms since birth.
He has just finally started to settle more, as he has had a few wind issues the first few weeks, I altered my diet and changed my feeding position and it has made a huge difference! :D DS2 does still get a bit upset when doing a bowel movement, and he does these frequently! However as time progresses the scale of distress has decreased, thank goodness!
Koru- Sounds like orla is indeed a normal baby, I bet in a few weeks she will be much more settled.
Cass- Sorry to hear that Eloise has silent reflux, my BF's bub had that and it was a very distressing time for her. Hope the zantec works quickly, it did the trick with her bub. However she had months her bub screaming before someone actually diagnosed the problem. Her bub was a changed bub pretty much immediately.
Hi to everyone else, gotta go get dinner ready before bub wakes....
-
Hi All, I just sat down to write a nice post but my precious girl has just woken ;) But was excited that I finally created a new ticker  Hope everyone's bubs are settling into their family lives. Will be back to post properly later.
-
Hello everyone,
I am babysitting my nephew this weekend while my sister moves house from newcastle to canberra. It will be interesting, because as much as I love him, he can be a little brat. He is nearly 4, and lets just say that he's mother is much more 'easy-going' then I am when it comes to having rules and sharing. He already thinks I am the mean aunty, but at least that means he is more likely to listen to me then he does to others. And Jelly and Nate are loving having him here.
Baz is going well, but he isn't getting much sleep during the day. It is so noisy here with the other kids, that whenever I get him to sleep he gets woken up again. And of course he doesn't seem to sleep for very long if I try and put him down in his cradle or the snuggle bed - he wants to be held.
-
Noni - a happy baby and a happy mummy are what matters - regardless of how they are fed :). Hope the thrush has cleared up.
Misty - Hope DH is better now. Glad to hear the circ went well... we did not know if we were having a boy or girl so I had sussed out what I would need to do for a circ if it were needed... then we had a girl and all my research is tucked away for when/if we have a boy. Have you seen the doctor yet re possible prolapse or are you holding out until your 6 week check up? LOL I am the same re handed typing... if I am feeding on the right and have to use left hand to type it gets much much slower LOL or I get frustrated as I much much much prefer typing with both hands so am looking into feeding her in the sling to see if I can get some use out of both hands at the same time! Hope the weekend isn't too bad for you
Koru - hope Orla is settling better for you
Cass - she didn't end up with a cold seems it is just the way she breathes when she is on the boob! Yay for weight gain. Hope the silent reflux is better/managed now and the meds are helping.
Saffi - the time goes so quickly doesn't it. Hope the check up went well.
Salboo - that is great growth for DS2!
Ellee05 - what date was your DD born and I will add your details to the list on the first page. It is nice changing over your ticker isn't it!
AFM - had our weekly weigh in at the clinic and DD put on 160g in the week  she now weighs 2570g! DP and I are having some hilarious moments as first time parents and thankfully we have been able to laugh through them all! Not much else happening - feeding, sleeping, changing nappy, feed, sleep , nappy, feed, sleep, nappy... that seems to be my life at the moment (but I wouldn't have it any other way!)
-
tk - I have decided to wait to talk to my dr about the prolapse. I have been reseaching it and I am pretty certain i have a moderate/severe uterine prolapse, either way it appears that I cann't really make it any worse if i wait a couple of weeks - the damage has already been done :(
I am concerned that I may need surgery, but there are other options I can try first after I do see my dr. Truth is my biggest worry is in regard to DTD and potientially having more kids.
-
Misty - crapola... sorry to hear that - but am keeping my fingers firmly crossed that it is not a prolapse  I really have no idea what else it could be but fingers are still firmly crossed for you
-
Hi girls
Rhia - did Daniel catch your sore throat? Glad to see his constipation cleared up, hope you find a formula that is right for him. Peter gets windy - it must be so uncomfortable for them.
Koru - hi!! Peter sounds the same as Orla. His unsettled period is the feed after midnight, which is usually around 2am. Nothing works & we just have to wait until the next feed where he calms down again. I don't look forward to bedtime!!
TK - I'm glad Caitlin is such a good baby for you. Well done on the weight gain!! How cute is it when they suck on your face lol.
Nonie - Hope everything is going well with the formula - sounds like he's thriving on it.
Misty - Peter is the same lately - only sleeping if I hold him. As soon as I put him down he wakes up. Glad to hear the circumcision went well. I hope you're okay.
Cass - WTG Eloise on the weight gain!! So sorry to hear about the reflux though - it must be awful listening to her scream. Hope the meds are helping.
Saffi - How did Immi's checkup go?
Salboo - How do you feed your son? Peter gets quite windy & I'm keen to try anything that will help. Glad to hear your son is doing so well.
Well Peter has recovered from his cold but my DH got really sick this week. I take my hat off to single parents as it was soooo hard not being able to just hand Peter to DH for anythng. Peter was extra clingy too - probably sensed my stress!! But I guess it was good practise for when DH goes back to work next week. Should see the bags under my eyes though!!
We're still just getting through each day here, no sense of routine whatsoever yet. I'm finding the hardest thing is not knowing when I'm available for appointments etc as his feeding schedule differs everyday. I booked in a massage but unfortunately when I had it Peter was ready to eat so DH had to drive him around in the car until I finished!!
-
Hi all
Cheezel - welcome to life with a newborn! Things will start to settle down soon and you will get some sort of a routine established. In the meantime you just need to do the best you can with the free time you've got.
Misty - hope you survived looking after 4 kids.
koru - be warned! Just when you think you've got your baby worked out, they change on you.
tk - WTG Caitlin on the weight gain.
AFU - Immi's checkup went well. She put on 250gr this week (and the same the week before). She is now 4080gr. She is still the same length as she was at birth but her head has grown slightly. All her stats put her on the 50th percentile.
Still struggling with the breastfeeding. I am getting a referral to a clinic to get some assistance. In the meantime we are supplementing app 1 - 3 times a day with formula. Whatever we are doing seems to be working as she has got great weight gains!
Went shopping with Immi today. Strapped her in the carrier and off we went. She slept the entire time. She is a cuddle-bunny and loves being held.
Anyway both kids are down for the evening (I hope) and DH is in his man-cave and a chick flick is on so I might get some icecream and chill out.
-
Misty - That doesn't sound tooo good hun. Hope it works out not to be too bad... Eloise has the same issues as Baz she can get to sleep during the day, but one of the kids usually scream or knock something that wakes her up :-) Tuesdays and Fridays are our sleeping days lol (no kids at home)
TK - Thats great about ur DD's weight gain :) YAYAYAY... Glad your able to laugh through it all :)
Elle - Love your ticker and photo, she's gorgeous :)
Sal - Wahooo on the weight gain :) yay! How often does DS poo... Eloise does like 5 a day! almost every second nappy :P
Koru - Hos Orla settling now???
Saffi - Eloise has silent reflux - so doesn't vomit (means she still gets the food and able to pile on lots of weight) also feeds more regulary to sooth her throat... during the day we're feeding ever 1-2hours... Yay on immi's weight gain! that's great :) Eloise loves being in the carrier too :) And i had to laugh at part of your post "Misty - hope you survived looking after 4 kids." I have four kids hehe :)
Cheezel - Hope ur DH has got better, My DP just went back to work on Thursday, and omg what a shock to the system hehehe... No routine here either during the day, But at night we go down at 8, wake at 12 then again at 4. Just depends how long she stays up for each time, sometimes its only 20mins other times its an hour :)
AFM - Eloise meds must be working, she is a lot more settle now, and has less of the screaming in pain screaming!!! She's only cat naps during the day, and thats if i'm holding her, leaves me with getting nothing done, Lucky DP doesnt mind hehe!
And my OMG moment - Last night she rolled!!! From her back to her right side! She must of wanted to watch the TV (the lake house was on, she's going to be into romantic movies like her mummy :P )
Anyways i best be off, I have so much study to do for my exam on Wednesday! I need to read everything twice just to make it sink in...
-
Hey everyone just dropping in while I can. Am very tired I only had about 3-4hours of sleep last night, not because of Daniel, I just couldnt get to sleep! :wall:
Daniel is going very well, he weighs about 5kgs now, so putting on excellent weight gain, he is rolling onto his side and I got a very gorgeous smile last night. Makes it all worthwhile when his little face lights up!!:D
Misty- wow well done on looking after 4 kids! I sometimes struggle with one haha
Cass- Good luck with all your exams! and well done to Eloise on rolling yay!
Saffi- Hope everything goes ok with the breastfeeding and you get the help you need :)
CM- Glad to hear that Peter has recovered from the cold, but your poor DH! And yes Daniel isnt constipated anymore which is a relief.
Well Ive got to be off, Daniel is crying. Hope everyone else is doing well
-
ggrrrr my nephew is a brat and very whiney - he could be acting up just for my benefit. Am I a terrible person to say that I will be glad when he is gone back to his mum.
I have finally got all three older kids down for a nap (although I can hear one of then quietly talking to themselves), they are all in seperate rooms. Now I am just trying to get a very overtired baby to have a sleep.
DH is out helping my mum and dad unpack a truck full of stuff into my sisters new house. We just realised this morning that DH and I have been together 11yrs today, if it wasn't fathers day I would ask my parents to baby sit tonight so DH and I could go out to dinner. Maybe next year.
-
Cass - you really do have your hands full! At least your oldest 2 are in school. What are the signs of silent reflux?
Misty - happy anniversary!
Congrats to all the bubs rolling and smiling. Only smiles I'm getting are from wind!
-
Saffi - Only one of them are at school. DS2 start school next year :) Thats going to be bliss :)
Silent Reflux
Silent reflux can be very confusing there may be no obvious signs of reflux (such as vomiting) and the child generally isn’t ‘silent’. Silent reflux refers to refluxed material that goes up the oesophagus, but isn’t forced out of the mouth. The child may swallow it back down or the stomach contents/stomach acids may not come up the oesophagus far enough to be swallowed. This can be very distressing for the baby and cause problems; and can be even more damaging because it can sit in the oesophagus longer than if the child vomited. Medical intervention may be necessary because the same complications can arise, however it can be harder to recognise without any noticeable vomiting. If they are comfort feeders as well, then poor growth may not be an issue, and they may in fact have huge weight gains. This can also contribute to a delay in diagnosis.
Signs and symptoms
Infants under the age of 2 years
Irritability, excessive crying or screaming
Vomiting, posseting or regurgitation
Appearing to be in pain
Recurrent hiccups
‘Wet’ burp or hiccups
Congestion, ‘snuffling’ or appearing to have a cold
Bad or sour smelling breath
Feeding issues
displaying a fear of food or unwillingness to eat
pulling away and arching their back
crying during or after feeds
refusal to feed or only taking a small amount despite being hungry
comfort feeding- wanting to feed frequently
gagging/spluttering
difficulty swallowing
Sleeping issues
catnapping during the day
frequent night waking (though some refluxers do sleep well at night)
easily disturbed from sleep
Hoarse voice
Repeated coughing or wheezing
Weight issues e.g. inadequate weight gain, weight loss or excessive weight gain
Wheezing/coughing
Frequent red throat, with infection not necessarily a factor
Recurrent chest, ear, throat or sinus infections
Drooling or excessive salivation (known in medical circles as waterbrash)
Dental erosion/decay
Gagging themselves (using their hand/fist/fingers)
From reflux.org.au
Misty - your not being horrible :) Some kids just have more "grit your teeth moments" then others lol! congrats on 11 yrs
Rhia - Yay congrats on the weight gain Daniel :P Smiles are definitly worth while... No matter how many times you see them still make my heart melt each time! Even at 2300hrs!
-
Thanks Cass. Now I'm thinking that Immi could have silent reflux. They are such a wide range of signs and symptoms there.
Anyway, off to bed so that I can get a few decent hours sleep before the next feed.
-
Saffi - I hope your bubs doesn't have reflux. It isn't fun (as I am sure cass blob can tell you). Jelly had really bad reflux and was absolutely miserable as a bub - She didn't smile until she was nearly four months old. If you do suspect it might be a problem go and talk to your dr and get bubs cecked out). I am still concerned that Baz might have reflux - he has many of the signs, but luckily so far he hasn't seemed to be in pain most of the time. And he is still gaining weight despite throwing up large amounts after every feed (and between feeds). Hopefully he is just a perky baby.
Saffi - Bubs will smile when they are ready. My DD didn't smile until she was nearly four months old. My DS1 smiled for the first time an hour after birth (at first I didn't believe babies could smile that young, but he kept on smiling from then on - defnitely wasn't gas). And DS2 smiled at about 2 weeks.
-
Hi guys,
I haven't posted in ages cos my mum is here from NZ. So much to catch up on - sorry about the lack of personals. Thanks to everyone who enquired after Orla's settling: she's sleeping heaps better thru the night (waking regularly for feeds but generally going back to sleep well) but has got into an 'arsenic hour' (or 2-3 hours!) pattern in the evening - still very exhausting but more manageable than at 4am!
I read your post on Silent Reflux Cass - got me a bit concerned cos one of Orla's problems is constant hiccups - she doesn't seem to concerned by them (had them almost every day in utero too!) but sometimes they keep her from going to sleep leading to her getting 'overtired'. For now I'm pretty sure she doesn't have Silent Reflux - just hiccups and does have some gulping issues but they are related to my fast flow and we are managing that (usually!)
Misty sorry to hear about your possible need for surgery - I hope it can be sorted out quickly. As for smiling - although sometimes it may well be wind, a lot of the modern developmental textbooks say that new babies can feel happiness just as much as pain and discomfort so it stands to reason that they are indeed smiling (not just wind!) as much as they are frowning :) I like to believe they are giving us real smiles .....
-
Cheezel - it is very cute when they suck on your face... DP thinks it is hilarious when he is burping her and she will try to suck on his arm, his bicep, his collarbone, his neck etc etc. Glad Peter has recovered. Hope DH is better now as well. I don't have a set routine with DD - for me it is easier to follow her lead and if we are out and she needs a feed then I feed her under a wrap or in the back of the car - I fed her whilst I got my legs waxed... that was an experience! I suppose I am lucky that there isn't much to her so I can walk around with her and just carry her... when she gets heavier I think the sling will be a much better option!
Saffi - wtg on the weight gain! Mmm icecream!
Cass - I have to laugh... there have been times where it has been a choice to cry or laugh... most of the time I have been able to choose laughter! Glad that the meds are working for Eloise - yay for rolling! It is great when they reach milestones. GL with your exam!
RhiaMaree - I hate those nights when you just can't sleep - especially now when sleep is at such a premium!
Misty - hope your nephew's behaviour improved for you. Congrats on 11 years! DP and I will celebrate 10 years together in December of this year.
AFM - we have DDs appointment with the Paediatrician today (follow up appointment from her admission to the SCN) which means that she has been out of hossie for 2 weeks
It was DPs first father's day yesterday and he recieved a golf shirt and we are going to make some artwork for the house from DDs hand and foot prints. We had newborn photos done yesterday with Sarah_H ("the Photo Fairy") and we think there are some really good shots... we can't wait to see the photos! Not much else to report... will be back on later after the Paediatrician appt.
-
Hi Guys,
Cheezel - i am beastfeeding Max. He was having bad wind around the 2 week mark and i spoke to my maternal health nurse about it. I Knew there were certain foods i shouldn't eat but she informed me to eliminate the following foods from my diet for the first 3 months of feeding.
Nuts
Garlic
Onion
Cabbage (I knew that one)
Leeks
Fizzy drinks
It does make it a bit difficult as alot of the food we usually eat does have garlic/and or onion in the recipe.Especially sice most of the meals I froze have these ingredients also. However for a happier baby it has definitely been worth it!
She also advised feeding max lying down as it reduces the flow of Milk, and therefore stops him gulping so much.
Koru- Happy to hear Orla is sleeping much better for you!
Misty - Happy anniversary!
Cass- It seems like DS2 poos nearly every nappy! i'm glad to hear Eloise poos alot too! It's the pooy nappies during the night I'm not a fan of!
-
Just dropping by to say hi everyone and I hope all the mums and bubs are going well :)
Sorry for the lack of persies, but we are a little sleep deprived ATM (well more than normal!) because Emma has a little cold :( Poor little thing has been miserable at night but not too bad during the day. But apart from that she is going really well, still feeding well despite a stuffy nose thank goodness and hopefully she will be over it soon. And she smiled at me for the first time yesterday - ohhhhhhh how cute :)
Will be back for some persies soon, take care everyone :)
-
You know when you have those days where you wonder what on earth ever possessed you to become a parent (OMG THREE TIMES - what an idiot!). Well I am having one of those days today. Lets hope I can get them all to have a sleep soon (and maybe even try and get a nap myself, if all three do decide to oblige me by sleeping at the same time) and then wake up happier, less arguementative and less troublesome.
-
Salboo - I didn't know about eliminating fizzy drinks if you are breastfeeding... mmm might explain some of DD's wind! I am not drinking lots of fizzy drinks but she got a lot more wind in the days following my first fizzy drink post pg (had GD so laid off all that stuff!). Thank you for the info!
Megsmum - hope you are able to get more sleep soon and that Emma recovers from the cold super quickly.
Misty - yep I had one of those moments at 2.45am this morning... and I only have the one! Hope you are able to get some sleep soon.
AFM - DD had her follow up at the paediatrician as it had been 2 weeks since she was discharged from hossie. He put her weight at 2850grams which would mean that she had put on 280grams since last Thursday... now I know her weight gains have been good but I doubt she put on that much! His scales were the old type ones where you move the things across so ?? maybe it was inaccurate - not sure but I see the ECHN again this Thursday (we are still doing weekly weights) so I suppose I will see then... my only concern is that if the weight is wrong and she is less than that this Thursday they will see it as a loss and I might have a fight on my hands to keep her on the breast exclusively. Time will tell I suppose
-
Misty I hear you hun!!! Hopefully all the kids go to sleep at the same time and give you a rest! I have an older child free day (they are at kindy/school) and really need to study for my exam but im too tired and eloise hasn't stop screaming since this morning... bla!
Megs - Wahoo on the smile... Poor Emmy having a cold... glad she almost over it
Sal - yea the cabbage i forgot abuout untill ate cho mein, poor Eli afterards i felt awful...
gootta go she screamin agaihn
-
Hey all, it's been forever since I posted but have been reading and keeping up.
We've had a rough few weeks, DS got sick and we went back to hospital for 3 days and now we're thinking he may also have reflux. Going to start him on a thickner today and see if that helps.
Misty - oh I'm hearing you!! I had the exact same day yesterday and there were lots of tears (from mummy!).
Sorry I haven't been able to post more but it's hard with an unsettled bub and a 20mo who's fond of a tantrum
-
tk - I just wanted to give you my take on things as someone who had a SCN baby first time around and had some troubles BFing, feel free to ignore it or take it on board as you wish ;) Take Caitlin's weight as whichever is more favourable to what you want to do, many ECHN's are very cautious with weight gains and will recommend comping with formula at the drop of a hat. If that is not what you want to do, go with whatever weight is best ;) This is just my experience, but I got better advice from my paed who was very pro BFing and encouraged me to continue exclusively when the nurses were telling me I needed to be comping. I really wanted to exclusively feed her and regret still that I listened to some of the more dodgy nurses. I know its easy for me to say now when every thing has gone smoothly feeding the second time around too, so like I said feel free to ignore me if you want LOL GL anyway with the next weighing, hope you don't even need to worry!
-
Hi all,
just here very quickly while Emily is feeding then she will go to DH while I actually get sumthin done today.
Emily was born by c-section on 8/8 at 6:20am weighing 8lb 7oz (3800g)
Life has been very crazy, hectic, stressful, sleepless, emotional but wonderful over the last 4 weeks. I tell you what, Im never doin this again. We've shut shop and DH got the snip a couple weeks ago. Emily is constantly crying, I think its colic, gunna go and buy some gripe water and try that, or maybe just get a bottle and try some warm water.
Breastfeeding is going good after a difficult start. I bought some nipple shields on day 5 coz I was in so much pain and they saved my life, my nipples and my breastfeeding. I didnt breastfeed my first two children so this is all new to me. Its all going well now though.
Anyway I gotta go start tea. I will be back soon.

Cass - hope you were able to study for your exam. What are you studying (sorry if I have already asked you that  I can't remember!)
Willow - hope DS is better now and that the thickener helps
Megsmum - thank you. I totally get where you are coming from and you sound very much like me... I am just not liking the potential fight with them when I tell them I will be keeping her on the breast. She had comp formula feeds in the SCN but only until my milk came in... it is not that I am against her having formula... I am just very passionate about her breastfeeding. I will only have a problem if the weight the paed wrote down was wrong... but it could well be that she is that weight and his scales were correct... if they are then she is going great guns but if the weight he wrote is wrong then they may take it as gospel and 'say' that she had a loss when she didn't IYKWIM.
I appreciate your advice... it is hard enough being a first time mum let alone a first time mum with the bossy SCN nurses and (sometimes pushy) ECHNs when they are dealing with premmie bubs... even though they can be just as pushy with full termers!
Welcome Megan! Congrats on your baby girl! I hope it isn't colic but it would be nice if you had an answer as to what is upsetting Emily.
AFM - we have our weekly ECHN weigh in tomorrow... I am hoping she really did put on all that weight that the paed's weight says she did... she is feeling very heavy - so either she did put on weight or I am getting weak LOL. Will update you all after the clinic visit tomorrow.
Oh, I think I have FINALLY got all the documents to Centrelink that they need... fingers crossed they don't come back with any other requests for "further information"

hi all,
just a quick pop in while DD is on the breast - one finger typing!
megan - my naturopath recommended a herbal liquid that is like gripe water only even better - it's called iberogast. you'll need to get it from a health store and it's pretty pricey but you use such tiny amounts and it seems to work a treat :)
-
tk - Definitely sounds like we feel the same about it all, I don't have anything against formula either (both my DDs have had it) but I am very pro breastfeeding and would prefer only to use formula if medically necessary. Both my 2 had it because of low blood sugars unfortunately :( Best of luck with the weigh in today.
MeganH - Welcome! I hope the crying settles for you soon, I know the feeling! We have had a fair bit of crying the last 2 nights now too, hopefully tonight will be better.
Willow - GL with the thickener, hope it helps.
misty - Hope you are having a better day today!
koru - Glad Orla is sleeping well at night, I hear you on the "arsenic hour"!
Rhia - Daniel is a good size bub isn't he? I reckon Emma is probably a bit more than 4kg now, haven't had her weighed for couple of weeks now - will have to check it in the next couple of weeks I guess.
Cheezel - Emma was sucking on my neck today LOL and DD1 once gave me a hickey on the chin when she sucked on it!!
Hi everyone else, sorry for no more persies E is waking up! Hope you are all well.

Megsmum - yep that is why DD had formula at first because of low blood sugars (I had GD) and then my colostrum wasn't enough for her to feed from via the tube so they were giving her the colostrum and topping off with formula until my milk came in then her tube feeds were of EBM and we built up her breast feeds whilst she was developing the suck reflex.
Well the weight with the paediatrician was correct :o  I was shocked when we got the ECHN yesterday and she weighed her and she was 2860 - 10 grams above what she was on the Monday. I think I looked a bit too shocked because the nurse asked me if I was ok and I told her about the paed appt and how I had doubted the weight. I am just so happy!!
DD was one month old on Wednesday... um where did that month go!
Hope you are all well and bubs are well too!

Hello all
Well my DH went back to work a couple of days ago. He does 12 hour shifts so I was nervous about it. But I am looking forward to making more sense out of my days IYKWIM. Peter's sleep (or lack of) has been shocking but since DH's been working he is sleeping much better both in the daytime & the night - yay!! May not last but am enjoying it while it does lol.
Peter has put on over 500gm since last fortnight so I'm pretty happy with that.
Sorry for lack of personals - Peter is starting to stir!!
Hope everyone is having a good week. Can't believe my boy is 1 month aargh growing up too quick!!

Hi everyone
Been keeping up with you all but can never manage to get both hands free to type a reply. Both kids are down for the night so I am able to post.
tk - yay for bub's weight gain!
Cheezel - my DH went back to work this week too. As much as it was good having him around I too was looking forward to being our own so we could establish a routine.
Willow - I hear ya on the tantrums. L threw several tantrums today, they were consecutive and just blurred into one huge one. In the end I think he forgot what he was upset about. DH came home to find L screaming, Immi screaming and I was pretty close to it too!
AFU - things are ok here. Still think that Immi has silent reflux. I am currently writing down her feeds, sleep patterns etc to see if there is any pattern. We have a paed appointment next week so I am hoping he may be able to explain some of her crying.
Anyway, off to bed so that I can have a bit of sleep before she is up for her next feed.

Good Morning All :D
I joined the thread a little while ago but haven't managed to get back. Life has been quite crazy really, but my Mum has gone home now and DH is back at work so I'm hoping that we'll get some normality now.
It is lovely to read all your posts but having to catch up on so many I'm going to apologise for the lack of personals and I'm hoping to become an active member of the thread now.
TK - DD arrived on 3rd August, after they managed to stop my labour long enough to wait for DH to arrive on the plane. She wasn't due til the 25th so it was quite a surprise.
DD is pooing pretty much every nappy and sometimes we go through 2 at feed time. I was a little concerned as they were quite mucousy and when we had visit with the health nurse last week she was able to see one and said it wasn't normal but considering she is still gaining weight to wait and ask the Pead when we visit back in Perth on the 23rd. Can anyone shed some light on these? Apart from that she suffers terrible wind. I'm keeping my diet quite basic and can't seem to work out why. She will wake her self up crying and squirming from pain and I have to just nurse her and rub her tummy the she goes back to sleep. She also is a bit spewy, before, after and in between feeds, not all the time but more than enough. She does this other thing like she's going to be sick but then just kind of gags.
Anyway sorry for the long post. Great to see the nice weight gains for your babies, hope the sick bubba's are feeling better and you're all getting some sleep.
Oh DD managed to give us the distinct real smiles this week  definately not to be mistaken for the wind grins... too cute.
