vicky i use cloth wipes too!! i could always get my mum to overlock you a bundle and send them up!!!!
id use MCN too, as kim said there always easy to resell, especially ones like the bumgenius, which i love too!! looking at getting the new version 3. i hate having to spend money on sposies, i always think of what cloth ones i could have bought with the money!!
kim i hope you have a great weekend away!! the girls will be fine though having said that id be crying too if i had to leave sophie, easier said than done!!
were up in albury for the weekend, sophs still not well, but we figured time with grandparents always cheers her up!!
christy hows your mum?????
blanche i bought sophie swim nappy and tankini, looks so cute!!
tara have you tried a teething necklace????
gigi hi honey!!! i love saving money on bubs stuff too, as you'd already know!!!
christy we should do a co-op with your mum when shes up to it for some bumgenius version 3!! save on postage, then send them out!!!
-
Christy - I've had mega mummy meltdowns lately. i think it's just that age! lol i feel like all i do is 'no evie' 'no leave it' 'dont touch' and then my heartbreaks and she does something else to try and get my approval.
One thing i always noticed at kindy was how the kids behaved depending on my mood. like, if i was having a ****ty day it seemed the kids were too, but if i was really happy and laid back, the kids were brilliantly behaved. and i only just remembered that today with evie. LOL only took 15 months! so i am trying to be positive and not such a grump lol
Blanche - bump is coming along...just waiting for those stretch marks from evie to flatten out LOL. how bout you?
-
VICKY - i just did a long post to your question about the cost benefits of putting Aston in MCN for a year approx, in the MCN thread, so won't repeat myself here. One thing i forgot to say, which i feel freer to say here, is that if you are completely new to MCN (as opposed to someone who already knows the types available and has preferences already), i would suggest - to work out what you do and don't prefer, to get a trial pack of a few different types of nappies. Use them for a few days - then you will be able to tell what suits Aston, what suits you and therefore what to get more of. Nurture Nappies does a great trial pack called the Nurture Nappies Stash - good assortment (including a BumGenius 3.0).
Do you sew Vicki? I could point you in some great DIY MCN directions if you do.
DO you knit Vicki? ditto
Two ways to make it even cheaper for yourself.
Even if your sewing skills consist of sewing a straight line around a rectangle, that can still help you with saving money and using MCN. WIll fill in the blanks once i find out whether this interests you or not.
Once i know the size of Aston, shape etc, can help you more.
But i would say, no matter how good teh bulk price packs look e.g buy 24 of product X, unless you ahve already bought ONE of them, tried them and are VERY HAPPY with them on Aston, RESIST the urge to buy the bulk packs. Count to ten and email me if you feel yourself getting weak!
KIMMY! i am so happy you ARE going away on your weekend! Hope you and Craig have lots of lovely cuddles and the chance to relax together. Sounds like the girls are in good hands, how lovely for them to have nice granddies.
Flannels, wipes, washers, facecloths, yes, i guess there are ALOT of names for those! ANother easy thing to sew too vicky!
BLANCHIE - aren't you in Perth hon? i'm sure i've looked up Perth MCN stores before for MCN. on the ozclothnappies database, there is a list of IRL shops allover Aust, and there are a number in perth. It IS wonderful to see LOTS Of brands IRL, to be able to look at them side by side, compare and work out what you prefer. Nothing beats your kid actually roadtesting it! but at least seeing them is better than nothing. You can also join Nappycino and Ozclothnappies and find out when Perth local meetups are on. This is how i got to see MCN in real life, the old timers bring their stash faves to show the newbies. MCN is a very helpful community. I take along a HUGE bag or two of MCN to our local meetups, to help newbies get to see what is out there (cos i remember how much i appreciated people doing that for me in 2006 when i was pregnant).
Just like with Vicki, if you can tell me what you need, i can point you in a few directions. Size, shape, wetting pattern, lifestyle considerations e.g people who have their kids in childcare often have more AIO's cos that's an easy option to send to daycare).
Who asked about eh liners?
In Christy's answer, she talked about microFIBRE, hon i think you might have meant to type MICROFLEECE.
Microfibre is an ABSORBENT fabric, used to soak up the wee
Microfleece is a STAY DRY fabric, used as the inner on nappies, or for liners.
A cost effective thing to do for liners, is to buy a half metre of microfleece at Spotlight, the Little Additions brand is easy to find, the plain colour one is about $9 a metre. Cut that up into liners, e.g 30cm x 10cm strips - sized to fit the nappies you have. More generous size for the night nappies.
You wash these with the nappies and re-use.
No sewing required, the microfleece doesn't fray.
Some kids rash to having anything synthetic next to their skin, if this is your child, avoid the microfleece.
When bilby had really bad nappy rash in mid Jan, i made her a host of liners out of old flannelette sheets. It meant i had to change her nappy more often, obviously flannelette is not a stay dry fabric, and nappy rash also occurs by kids sitting in a wet nappy too long. But i still used the microfleece liners for night nappies, cos that is too long for her to be sitting in wet.
Looking back, i think that rash was caused by toxic poos, cos i had been overfeeding her fruit puree everyday, thinking i was giving her something healthy - but it burnt her bottom coming out.
ANother reason kids rash up is to do with WHAT you wash their nappies in, and HOW MUCH you use. MCN only needs HALF the wash powder you use for a load of clothes, and using a powder for sensitive skin e.g no dyes, perfumes or enzymes is a good idea. If you use full strength wash powder, you risk detergent buildup on the MCN (so it will get less absorbent) and many babies skin reacts to it.
happy to help anyone with MCN stuff (g.j@internode.on.net)
hope some of that helps you out, tell me if it's not and i'll shut up
i am so tired, that's my dash
sweetdreams lovelies!

hi all am here lurking scratched an itch and now can't get back to sleep plus Jake slept thru last night and I woke at 4 checked the time and now am "waiting" for him to wake up.
-
scratch away nelly!!!
not much here except sophie woke with a rahs on her trunk!! dont know what that is!!
ETA just had to leave and flip over my wholemeal avocado and zuchinni pikelets!!
-
me again
looks like sophie has the measles!!!
-
oh no poor little Sophie..there isnt much u can do for measles though is there?
well we didnt go to swimming lessons this morning :( Emelia decided wake up time was 5am (plus she woke alot last night) swimming is at 9.25am but we were both back in bed at 8 and didnt wake till 10.30!!
Gigi - i live an hour away from perth, i might have a look and see wat stores they sell them at up there, but yeah only one store here has the peapods!
-
Jols - how's sophie doing? did you take her to the doctor? measles are yucky... I remember having them as a 5 year old, it was horrible - think it would be worse for a little person... at least you can explain a little to a five year old. all i remember is we had to spend time inside, in darken room, and wore socks on our hands so we wouldn't scratch. My sister and I had it at the same time.
I think I'll take you up on the overlocking offer of cloth wipes. let me know how much - and I can transfer money to you. thanks
Gigi - thanks for the info... lots to think about. and i'm doing the economics on it this week. I've decided that if I'm actually not going to safe any money doing it, then I won't... so have to sit and do the sums - one question - I did cloth nappies with Laura and nathan, but they were terry toweling ones, that I used to soak in a bucket of napisan, and then wash... whats the deal with MCN's - how do you clean them???
nelly love it when those itches get scratched ;)
Blanche - you must be shattered hun. i hope you have had an easy day, and its not too hot. its stinking here today. no pleasing me is there - want the rain to go... so it does for the day, and i still end up whinging!! lol
I hope you having a lovely time away Kim.
Taralee - so true what you are saying - kids bounce of you - if your up, so are they.. and vice versa.
-
sophies ok so far!!!
have dr's again on monday if needed, but with MIL a nurse as well as her golf buddy whom we had a drink with today both said it looked like measals , we checked out info and she has had the classic lead up to the rash which was, funny nose, runny sore eyes, cough (which for her turned into bronchitis) and fever followed by the rash!!!
she's not itching yet, hopefully wont, but i guess time will tell, shes still on dimetapp fof the runny nose so perhaps thats holding back the itch!!
no worries about the wipes easy to do!! and no you dont saok MCN even the towelling ones! the sun does all the sanitising they need
blanche enjoy the sleep you \both obvisously need it!!!
-
What are you guys doing for meal times? It has turned in to such a bummer here. I know she likes to eat with her fork and pretty much do it all on her own, but like tonight she barely ate anything. so i made "myself" some toast and she ate all of it. We can't really do dinner as a family cos DH doesnt get home til late. PLUS it seems the only stuff she'll eat is pre-packaged stuff, my cooking won't do! :wall:
Jols - measels! yikes! any idea where she caught it from? at least u know why she' was 'yucky' leading up to it.
Vicky - i found some websites with 'thrifty recipes' and they have heaps of recipes using stuff thats ALWAYS left in the back of the cupboard (you know like cans of corn, beans etc) and any leftovers. they're good cos they're different ideas on using stuff you already have so when you go to do food shopping you only need a handful of stuff, not a whole trolley full like you might think.
Blanche - evie's up at 5 every day now and not going down til like 11, it is killing me!!! i just have to lock ourselves in her room so i can doze off on the floor LOL pregnancy...who'd do it again!! LOL
-
tara no idea where she got it, though we did share a plane with mmmmm 100 or so other people!! uh-oh !!! more worried about other people, one of the mums in mothers group is preggers so my concern is for her!!
dinner mmmm sophes pretty good, i make all her food, well thats probably no help at all :p have you tried homemade chicken nuggets with vegies???
-
Thats an idea Jols, she just hates vegies on their own. I feel so bad that i havent been more persistent with vegies, but i usually mix them into her dinner (that she doesnt eat hahaha)
Ummm. i have a confession. Evie hasnt had her 12month immunisations. I know, i know. there's always been something, and the fevers she's had with all this teething! then there was the gastro, a cold oh, and me having m/s and not being able to move for 2 months didnt help. I feel bad, but i will get them done on wednesday.
-
Tara check out the Deceptively Delicious stuff in the Recipes forum. There are a few good ideas there. Matilda has always been a pain with food... well from 12 months onwards.
I went out last night, it was like playing dress ups so fun! I went with some friends to Phantom of the Opera. We got all dressed up... then I got a job offer for something completely different. Now I have to think about what I am going to do. Its a research assistant job at the conservatorium of music. I have a degree in music performance... and vet nursing... argh... its make my own hours job part time. I would earn a heap more than I do working with animals, wow alot to think about.
Vicky MCN's are easier than terry flats as you just put them in an empty pail and wash as a normal load. BUT I was thinking about it last night & 12 nappies would be what you needed at a minimum and if you get new MCN's that would be $30 a month..... so if you spend $30/month on disposables it might not be worthwhile.
Gigi you are right I meant microfleece, opps :D. Mummy mush brain lol.
Jols I hope it isn't the measles!!! Jovie has gotten a viral rash everytime she's had a virus. It usually happens near the end of the cold symptoms... and everytime its started on the trunk.
-
Christy - thanks - that is what I'm thinking too... so I think I will go the cloth wipes. and I think I may just get him so undies to wear at home. Yesterday when it was sooooo hot, his nappy felt like a sauna, so I stripped him off and let him run around in a pair of shorts (just to catch any accidents) He looked so big and grownup with no nappy bum. lol
Tara - I know lots of people who have chosen not to immunise, or looked for alternative immunisation for the 12mths regime. so don't feel bad.
I had family come and visit yesterday, a second cousin that I haven't met before, that comes from Canada, and a cousin from Brisbane. We had a lovely day. of course aston thought it was all about him!
I was up at 12, and went to back to bed at 4am. I hate it when I go to bed early, thinking I might be able to get a really good nights sleep, and then end up waking up in the middle of the night unable to go back to sleep! I think my body thinks it only needs 5 hours sleep!
-
Wow Christy! sounds like a dream job!! Is it also something you could possibly do remotely while you're away seeing your mum? I mean, if you needed the cash.
Thanks, will check out the recipes! at the moment we are living on toast or toasted cheese and ham sandwiches, yogurt, sultanas and dried apricots, oh and weetbit...actually she'll eat corn lol thats about it!
-
We have returned!
Jols im sorry poor Sophie has the measles...(makes me wonder why we vacinate?)
TBH i didnt really read all the other posts, just skimmed
Chelsea is STILL sick. MIL rang Sat morning saying she was off to the dr's. Chels had been vomitting and diarreah (sp?), not eating and even worse not drinking. She was worried Chels was dehydrated. Anyhow seen a dr, she was on borderline dehydration and if she vomitted anymore more action would be needed. Turns out it is all apparently teething, but i cant help but think theres more too it.
We had a nice time away, relaxing and having some quite time....but its so hard to just switch off when ur baby is at home so sick....i called a few times a day!
Its good to be back home. MIL said we deserve a medal cos she has no idea how we manage and cope...so that makes me feel good....to know that i am doing a good job
-
Yay Kim!! you guys sure do deserve medals!
Yeah...teething and being so sick?! i dont think so. i know i'm no doctor but i'd go with your gut, i'd say there's more to it too. in all my years (lol..so old) of dealing with kids i have never known a kid to be borderline dehydrated just from teething. anyways it's the fact she's not keeping it down, not that she isnt trying, right? i could understand if her teeth hurt she wouldnt want stuff in her mouth, but didnt you say you've been giving her bottles of formula? you'd think she'd be chewing on the teat/straw/spout if her teeth hurt. PLUS it's been going for days... i hope it is just teething but i really doubt it.
-
Ok back to the doctors we went. She has Roto virus on top of teething. If she still bad in 48 hours then she has to go back again. poor chicken is so not well and clingy. AND my IL's go home tomrw and Craig back to work so ill be alone. Chelsea not allowed to go to FDC tmrw either.
-
kim glad you guys got to relax a little while away but sorry that chelsea is still sick
as for the measles unfortunatly until age 4 when they get the second MMR no child is immune to either of the 3 diseases!! she better though so thats good.
tara how about tuna/vegie mornay?? just make up cheese sauce and add tuna and steamed vegies along with macaroni, another one is steamed vegies witha chees slice over the top and microwaved for say 15 secs to melt the cheese, bubble and squek, pikelets!! ive made about 4 batches this week, plain with dried apricots, zuchinni and apple, zucchinni and avocado - wouldnt fo that one again, banana and sultanas! they frezze well too and a great alternative to sandwiches and less mess!!
vicky off to check out that saving website!!
wow christy what a great oppotunity for you!!!! thats so exciting for you!!!!
-
Jols, she actually did eat mornay the other day! well, the noodles she picked out herself.
She's actually had really gross nappies these last couple of days and is having trouble settling, just so clingy, so i wonder if her teeth are playing at part.
Kim - at least its sorted now, did Jasmine have the rota vaccine? Doctors,eh!
-
Yeah Jasmine had the vaccine at 2 months old...due for another lot now. Its part of the immunisation schedule which is good now.
-
Tara - u poor thing i couldnt imagine getting up everday at 5! Emelia slept better last night and woke at 8.15 this morning so that was nice!
Kim - hope Chels improves, poor thing. glad u got some time to yourselves though.
Gigi -thanks hun for the email really appreciate u taking the time to do that for me :)
we had a great day today went for breakfast and took Emelia to the beach with her cousins she loves it, she fell asleep on the way home and slept for 3 hours she was knackered!!
-
Hey Blanche you're 29 weeks how exciting!!!!!!!! I was at the shop in the mothers room today and a woman came in to breast feed with her friend who was heavily pregnant and she went away for a bit and came back going 'umm..i kinda had this watery stuff come out...' lol how exciting! well, ask me again in another 22 weeks, how are you feeling about it? excited? nervous? or just not thinking about it? lol
Hows things today Kim?
-
$hit still...Chelsea is still got the runny @ss happening. IL's gone home. 2 screaming kids. 1 tearful mum. A hubby that wants to move back to NSW and a DW that says when and how fast do u want me to pack.
-
ohhh darlin :hugs:
breathe in breathe out.
xxx
-
Hope everyone is doing well.
We've been to a wedding. Went down on Friday, had Andrew's sisters wedding and then came back sunday. We're pooped. Lots of cute shots of Ella in her pretty dress:)
Ella is doing better at daycare. She had a vomit in the car before we got there and i though uh oh...she wont do well. But she's slowly getting more comfortable. She ate 3 serves of chicken and apricot today!
Will have to try that at home too.
Sooooo tired and feeling run down - i'm just waiting for a cold to hit.
Ann
-
Think positive Ann! u won't get sick!! Glad Ella's doing better at daycare, that must be such a relief for you. Just remember, if you dont make a big deal about it, she wont think there's anything to make a deal of.
Christy - did you decide what to do about the job offer?
We're going slightly stir crazy here today. so much rain around so we cant go outside...it's only 3 and we're climbing the walls!
-
Not to brag or anything but can i just say i am feeling pretty proud of myself. for the last few weeks evie (for the majority of the time);
a) will sleep through the night
b) have a little cuddle then go straight into her cot, i leave the room, and she goes straight to sleep.
I am finally feeling like my hard work, tears and exasperation are paying off
-
You should be damn proud Tara!!!!!
-
well done evie!!:clap::clap: and tara
-
 Tara. i love it when you have those moments of complete clarity, and you can actually see a result! I'm feeling pretty proud too at the moment.
Kim - how you doing hun... breathing? are you seriously considering going back to NSW?
Blanche - I really want to get aston back in the pool... all the wet weather we have had, we have barely gone swimming. need to find an inside pool to do it in.in fact just general being outside has been hard. muddy. I am going to ask his grandparents in the uk to send some real wellys, that are high... it is so incredibly muddy at home, and the snakes.. but I really want him to play outside. it is soooo good for them.
Ann - tww over yet? i am thinking you might be up the duff. :D fingers crossed for you hun.
Christy :hello: how you and the girls?
Nelly :hello: its gonna be wet tomorrow...again!!!!
JOls how is sophie doing? that is interesting what you have said about the immunisation - can I ask you where you got that information, only because I really thought the kids were covered. and now they have dropped the rubella vaccine at 12. - I was borderline with Laura, and then borderline again with aston - seems the vaccine has only a certain time to be affective. i'd really like to get some more info - so if you have done this, would love to read it. thanks in advance. :) I hope your darling girl is back to her self real soon. for you both
gigi - thanks for all the info you gave me re: MCN's - think i'm going to just do undies are home actually - he is very aware of when he is about to pee, so I might take the opportunity for him to learn about it, and just see what happens along the way . if that makes sense...
sorry I think this post is all over the place. feeling incredibly tired. had a great day today visiting a girlfriend and aston and katie played all day. it was great... no tears tantrums or thrown tiaras :D good to get out the house - change of scenery really is like a holiday.
-
sure vicky, just need to find where i red the info!!
-
Glad to hear you're feeling positive Vicky!
Funny story from today;
i was making myself a cup of tea in the kitchen so i shut the gate so evie couldnt come in, but i gave her her cup of milk. anyways, i turned around just to see her little self disappearing as she ran away and a big puddle of milk on the floor..but no cup. so anyways, i start cleaning it up and her she comes around the corner carrying the 1/2 empty cup in question and looks at me with her hands out (palms up) like 'what happened, mum? how did that milk get there?!' and shes saying 'da da da' quite questioningly and i said 'yes, evie, what happened here?!' and she looks for a minute, and squats down and puts her cup on the floor on the side and says 'da' like 'well...thats how my cup went and the milk cup out'
-
Kim - what do you like better in NSW? Is that where you're from originally? is it more familiar? better support?
Vicky - that's wonderful that Aston is aware of his bladder, have you heard of EC? It stands for Elimination Communication. That may be of more use to you than buying MCN if he's aware of his bladder sensation, that's great. the noonee wilga site and tribal baby sites have heaps of info on EC-ing.
Taralee - congrats on the settling and sleeping coming up trumps.
We are still in the "stuff all for quantity" and "stuff all for routine" sleep pattern. Waiting until bilby is all worn out at 4.30am or something equally ridiculous like that. Our time cycle is all out of whack, i am at my wit's end with her sleeping. She fights it so much. I don't doubt she is a bit bored during the day and i lack the motivation to take her anywhere, i feel sick myself with a cold right now, and for a change we even have nice weather outside (mid 20's), but the way i'm feeling, the thought of going to dry, brown, dustbowl playgrounds, i find that even more depressing. We got one rain last week, rather pathetic, didn't even wet the ground, but it DID rain, a bit. Over very fast.
my SD is coming for the april holidays and i am already stressing about that. it's six weeks away. i want dh to take her and himself to a caravan park for the week, but that looks impossible, we don't have the money for the accom. cost even at a local caravan park. i am JUST coping with bilby, i feel like having SD here as well in this tiny place, will push me over the edge. Everything about having her here is just so damm hard.
maybe my cold is just making me ten times more miserable, i dunno, cannot see a way out.
breastfeeding is really hurting me right now too. feels like a bulldog clip has been put on my nipple each time bilby latches on. I'm trying so hard to get her neck back, her mouth wide open, so my nipple is positioned in her back palate - so she can't bite me - but she has a cold too, when she breastfeeds, i hear her laboured breathing - so seh's not opening her mouth as wide as usual.
god i would so love just a little bit of the excess rain you guys are having.
Wondering if you are pregnant Ann? fingers crossed?
VIcky, that video you put on Facebook - i was bawling i can tell you.
-
thats so cute tara, what little personalities they now have!!!
gigi are you saying bilby doesnt go to bed until 4.30am??????????????????????????
how much sleep is she having in 24 hours?
-
Gigi im originally from NSW, we moved to VIC in Oct 06 for Craigs work, which was sold last year and it was moved to ACT but we styaed here. As much as i love VIC, i have nothing here. No friends and no family. having the IL's here on the weekend made us realise we want to be close to them and so the girls have their grandparents in the life. I was raised in a $hit family life. i dont have the 'mum mum' or the 'dad dad' i just have a mum and dad IYKWIM. They were never there for me when i needed them. Where as Craig has the best mum/son and dad/son relationship, and his siblings are all close to each other too (not age wise but tight knit). I love them heaps and we would like to be closer to them. I really dont mind not being close to my parents. I always get the brush off feeling from them. Im sure some have read about mum mum/sister antics....(theres a new one in the boo hoo room now in fact) so im not phased being away from them. I do however feel for my dad cos he is a great guy and loves his grand kids. So yes we are highly considering moving. Have spoken to MIL about it and she will boot tenants out of a house so we can move in (she has a fair few rentals and actually built us a house but then we moved to Melb).
As for Bilbys sleep, thats a bit worrying that she is fighting sleep. Chelsea is a horror if she isnt in bed by 9pm at the latest. What kind of things do you both do through the day?
Tara thats something Chelsea would do with her drinks...only she looks at me and says 'Why' when something gets spilt or broken...LOL
We had friends come over last night for tea....was ment to go out but by 8pm Chelsea was passed out in bed, as was Jasmine. So we ordered in chinese. Was so yummy. On the food topic, Chelsea since being sick (and still is) she has wanted more milk (formula still). Normally 150ml is enuf but has been wanting more. So gave her 200 and when thats gone she lets out the most blood curling screams wanting more. So make 50 more.
Do you think that 250ml is ok for her? Im thinking maybe cos she isnt eating her normal foods again she is stocking up on the milk to keep her going?
-
Kim - I'd be giving Chelsea whatever she wants at the moment. Give her as much formula as she'll drink and then as she's feeling better you can start replacing the formula with solids if she'll take them.
Gigi - it breaks my heart to hear you so down. i know that feeling of being so stuck and not seeing a way out. It is such a rut to be in and can be so overwhelming. You've probably already been asked, or more likely have already done it - have you been to a sleep clinic? i'm pretty sure there are community health ones that are free. Maybe you need to persist with more of the routine, babies and children (like adults, i guess) thrive on routine and it could just take Bilby a while to get used to it. if you start doing the same thing at the same time everyday she'll start to predict what is coming up and what is going to happen and that may help with settling her. I've got some basic ideas of routines from working in the babies room at kindy, so i'd be more than happy to share them with you. please please, if you want to chat, let me know. i really want to help you out of this, dont let it become all consuming. hugs and prayers for you xx
-
kim do what you think is right, she may be filling up on milk which is why she doesnt want food, id just off her small amounts frequently of her favourite foods, no matter what that is, im a believer of eating what you feel like even if its junk. sophie only had about 150ml of cows milk as a drink, 1x b/f, cheese and yougurt/custard
bbl....
-
Christy - where did you say those deliciously deceptive recipes? i couldnt find them
-
Does anyone like Jamie Oliver??
My friend sent me a word document which has ALL of his new books recipies in it...if you interested PM me your email addy and ill forward it to you.
Tara the link for Christy's thread: https://www.bellybelly.com.au/forums...ad.php?t=55778
