I finally managed to sit down and look at Belly belly for the first time since Madeline was born. I was in the pregnancy thread 15th-30th Sept so I had been keeping track of a few of you. Belfie so far is the only one i know, however i think that most of the other lovely ladies went early so they are in the thread before this one. Anyway it will be great to get to know you all and your babies.
Well things are going better for me now, the first 4 wks were hard. I had a pretty hard labour (30hours, failed vaccum and an emergency c-section), so recovery has been long and hard. I have also had quiet alot of trouble feeding (cracked nipples, engorgement, slight mastitis, thrush which i still have and low milk supply). I'm pretty happy though as i have managed to feed only breastmilk and haven't had to supplement with formula.
Madeline is gorgeous and is growing so fast, now weiging about 9pound. She was born 7pound 4oz 53cm and 33cm head cir.
So about feeding, is anybody else having trouble (sorry i haven't read through the forum to see). I have been seeing a lactation consultant at the hospital once a week which has been great. I am trying to treat thrush but the medication that is recommeded is $285 for 28 tablets. RIDICULOUS!!! So i have to persist with creams and fewer tablets and see if that works. I would love to hear from anyone who has had this problem.
Anyway i will try an post as often as possible. I don't have access to computer very often.

Oopsadaisy - hi there -hope your feeding has improved! We all have our battles with it whether it be first time or third time (me!) - hard where we live in a world that is so exacting to then just hand over to trust your body to make and give what baby needs - just hard cos you can't see how much they actually take in!
gobbly - my fella also slept 8 hours the other night - but of course I woke and checked on him a few times - should of just stayed in bed cos of course he was fine! He regularly feeds around 7 - 8ish now and bed, and then next feed somewhere between 2 - 4am. So not too bad, finally getting a few hours of sleep
SophieW - welcome to BB - you will find loads of info on here and some really nice people too
I am getting used to the interrupted sleep. But it really helps if I feed Sophie in the dark, when I was turning on the bedside light, she would take ages to go back to sleep, but thats what happens when you have a 100 watt globe.
Is there any way to cut their nails, Sophie's are growing very long
hi, i finally have some time to leave write in the forum... been soooo busy with the new baby
i had a little girl, Shayla, born on the 18 of sept. she was about 8 pound 11 ounces (3964 grams). 22 hour labour but due to complications ended up having an emergency c/s.
she was perfectly healthy, putting on weight beautifully. tonight i have finally put her in her big cot for the first time, in her own room, and she is sleeping well!
im not breastfeeding, my milk never came in properly. she has been completely formula fed from day 10. i was on medication to try increase my milk supply, but it never worked for me.
Sophie i find that waiting till the baby is asleep then cutting nails is fine. she doesnt move and i find it quite easy, i have had to cut shayla's nails twice already.
i hope to be on more often now.

Ang, Sorry to hear that you had a difficult labour, at least you've recovered now.
I was in a very similar situation to what you've discribed as I couldn't breast feed Madeleine so was seeing the lactation consulants at the hospital but I could only EBM all feeds, they're great aren't they. I had thrush & just took the nilstat capsules (only cost $22) two doses of that seemed to clear it up for my along with the daktarin gel, unfortunately it's a little harder to clear for bub. I also had a terrible milk supply so went on the molitium tablets, they worked a treat, I had 2 scripts & have now given up as my supply wont stay good unless on the tablets & I don't quite feel so great on them, so we are about to revert to formula.

Candy Jay: Thankyou for posting, was nice to hear from you. Yes staff a hospital have been great especially lactation consultatants, i wouldn't be feeding Madeline still if it wasn't for them. I have also been taking the molitium tablets for 11 days now, they seem to be helping. I was expressing in between feeds so that i could top her up after each feed but now i don't have to do that, and because she sleeps 7-8hrs every night i express in the middle (around 2-4am) and if she needs a top up during the day i can give her the expressed milk. I still haven't gotten on top of the thrush despite using two lots of diflucin 1, but they have slightly improved. Do you need a script for the nilstat tabs? Lac consult recommened nilstatin tabs (are they the same), but said i would need a script from the dr. When i went to get a scrpit he told be not to bother trying them because they don't work. I would like to try them just to see if they work.

SamiH - During preg we are told how natural it is to breastfeed and that we should do it for 6mths, but what they don't mention is how alien like it is and how hard it really is. To me it certainly hasn't come naturally but with the help of the LC it has been great. Generally i feel if your really keen and you can get help continously and support from your partner then theres a good chance that it will work. Yes its very hard to know how much they are getting unless you express and then bottle feed.
